‘Serve the people, not politics': Johor Regent tells assemblymen to stay focused and accountable
ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 16 — Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today reminded all assemblymen to carry out their responsibilities effectively by providing the best service to the people and the state.
His Majesty said the state assemblymen must continue working to develop and improve the living standards of Johoreans, regardless of the election cycle.
'This is not an election season, and you have all been elected to serve the people.
'So, please focus on that responsibility. The people of Johor need assemblymen who are accountable and effective in serving them.
'Take care of your conduct and serve well so that Johor remains progressive and is admired and respected,' said Tunku Mahkota Ismail after officiating the fourth term of the 15th state legislative assembly session at the Sultan Ismail Building in Kota Iskandar here today.
Tunku Mahkota Ismail also reminded all assemblymen not to use the state assembly to pursue personal conflicts or political interests, as it could make them a laughing stock.
'The state assembly serves as a platform to discuss policies, enact laws and most importantly, to champion the well being of the people of Johor,' he said, calling for all assemblymen to uphold the harmony which has been the tradition of the state assembly.
Meanwhile, the Regent also stressed on the importance of Johor being administered by officers with high professional standards and skills.
Tunku Mahkota Ismail reminded all that Johor is developing rapidly and that it is only appropriate to improve the standards of Johor Civil Service (JCS) officers.
He said that as the backbone of the government in formulating policies, they should support the implementation of various initiatives and serve as a bridge between the state government and the people of Johor.
'They need to be equipped with global knowledge and leadership skills that are in line with today's needs.
'As an initial step, the state government through the Darul Ta'zim Permodalan Education Fund has taken the initiative to sponsor senior civil service officers in Johor to follow world-class professional development courses at international educational institutions, including Ivy League universities in the United States,' he said.

The party's information chief, Azalina Othman Said, said while Umno respects a person's right to make political choices, Cabinet appointments are based on the party represented instead of one's individual capacity. She said while the prime minister chairs the national unity council, Cabinet ministers are appointed as the party's representatives. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul said he had submitted his resignation as an Umno member as well as from all party posts. He said he had informed PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh of his intention to join PKR.

PETALING JAYA : There have been no official discussions on Tengku Zafrul Aziz's application to join PKR, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. However, he said Tengku Zafrul's position as investment, trade and industry minister would not be affected. 'We have not discussed anything yet. Let him fulfil his haj first. We don't need unhealthy speculation,' he said. Anwar praised Tengku Zafrul, saying he had handled his duties as minister well. 'We have hundreds of billions in investments, much of them managed by him with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, his ministry and the government,' he said. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said he had decided to leave his fate as a Cabinet minister to Anwar, following his exit from Umno. He reiterated that his decision to leave Umno was not easy, but was made after careful consideration of various factors. 'I would like to focus on my haj pilgrimage, and I leave the matter entirely to the wisdom of the prime minister,' he said. Tengku Zafrul was recently urged by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to step down from the Cabinet after deciding to leave Umno. Yesterday, Umno president and deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also urged Anwar to ensure that Umno retains its quota of seven ministers in the Cabinet. With Tengku Zafrul's exit from Umno, the party is left with six members in the Cabinet – Zahid, Mohamad Hasan, Johari Ghani, Khaled Nordin, Zambry Abdul Kadir and Azalina Othman Said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's application to the Federal Court to rule whether he has immunity from a civil suit invites direct comparison with a case concerning former prime minister Najib Razak, says Perikatan Nasional chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan. In a statement today, Takiyuddin pointed out that Najib had sought immunity from a civil suit filed against him by then DAP MP Tony Pua over allegations of abuse of power in the 1MDB controversy. Takiyuddin, a lawyer, noted that the Federal Court had decided on Nov 19, 2019 that the prime minister is a 'public officer' and can be sued for abuse of power. 'This case (involving Najib) set an important precedent that a prime minister is not immune to civil or tort action if it relates to the public abuse of power. 'In other words, no citizen, including the prime minister, should be above the law, and no position can be used as a legal shield against actions taken on a personal basis,' he said. Anwar is asking the High Court to refer eight questions of law to the Federal Court for determination, including whether he has immunity from a civil suit brought against him by a former research assistant. He said he wants the apex court to rule whether Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from a suit filed by Yusoff Rawther four years ago. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place prior to Anwar taking office on Nov 24, 2022. In the application filed by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad, Anwar asked the court to decide whether the suit would impair the effective discharge of his executive duties and undermine the constitutional separation of powers.
