Johor motorists can claim compensation for accidents caused by damaged roads, says exco

ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 24 — Motorists involved in accidents due to road damage in Johor are entitled to claim compensation, said Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. He said motorists can claim for damages to their vehicles, but must provide evidence showing the incident was caused by potholes or impaired roads. 'If an accident happens where there is vehicle damage due to road damage, motorists can make a claim to the concessionaire responsible for supervising the route,' he said during the question-and-answer session at the Johor state legislative assembly in Kota Iskandar today. Mohamad Fazli, who is also the Bukit Pasir assemblyman, was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Pandak Ahmad (BN-Kota Iskandar) on the quality of road paving and repairs in Johor. He said motorists must take photographs of the accident or vehicle damage, as well as the road defect. 'They must also include details of the location and time, a police report, and related receipts. 'An official letter can then be submitted to the relevant parties and road concessionaire involved, such as local government authorities, the Public Works Department (JKR), or the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA),' he said. Mohamad Fazli added that a motorist was recently awarded RM721,000 in compensation by the Johor Baru Sessions Court.

Johor govt to engage local councils on unused MyKiosks

The MyKiosk units are a national initiative by the housing and local government ministry. (Bernama pic) ISKANDAR PUTERI : The Johor government will convene a meeting with all 10 local authorities to address the high number of unutilised MyKiosk units in the state. State housing and local government committee chairman Jafni Shukor said the meeting was necessary to come up with solutions and ensure that the initiative to support small traders continues to thrive. 'Before these kiosks existed, many single mothers, single fathers, and poor families were eager to start a business. Some were even evicted from their trading spots. 'Many traders are struggling, so I've directed that the kiosks be rent-free for the first six months. In my view, this is a good initiative as they provide legitimate spaces for many who previously lacked licences. 'Single parents and others now have a proper place to operate,' he said during the Johor legislative assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar today. He was responding to an additional question from Gan Peck Cheng (PH–Penggaram) on the status of the MyKiosk initiative. The Bukit Permai assemblyman said a brainstorming session would be held with all 10 local councils to come up with creative approaches to revitalise the kiosks and support small traders. 'When I visited some of these kiosks, traders told me there's no water supply. They're relying on solar power and don't even have proper set-ups to cook food. 'Can we relocate the idle kiosks to better spots and ensure that they have access to water and other facilities? We want these kiosks to truly benefit the people, so we need to place them in strategic locations. 'If needed, we can arrange skills training for traders. The point is, if we're going to help people, we can't do it halfway,' he added. The MyKiosk units are a national initiative by the housing and local government ministry. Lately, social media posts had highlighted the number of units that were empty or abandoned, largely due to inconsistent participation by traders.

Johor-Singapore SEZ gains momentum as Anwar reaffirms Putrajaya's commitment to governance and growth

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — The federal government will continue to support efforts to ensure infrastructure and facilities are at the highest level to strengthen investor confidence and the overall success of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as a catalyst for new growth in Johor. In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he appreciated Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's briefing on the progress of foreign investment, especially in JS-SEZ. 'Alhamdulillah, this initiative between the two countries has succeeded in attracting high interest and confidence among investors to invest in Johor,' he said. The Prime Minister, who arrived in Johor this morning, said he attended several important planning events, starting with the Johor State Development Special Meeting in Kota Iskandar with the Menteri Besar and state and federal leaders. 'In this meeting, I reiterated my commitment to efficient governance and integrity, especially in the aspects of management, finance and administration. 'This includes the issue of the people's security and health in the implementation of projects involving the procurement of equipment and services. 'We need to adopt a wise approach and think outside the box so that the savings achieved can be channeled to other more urgent needs, especially in the fields of public health and education,' he said. The Prime Minister said the state government also presented development projects that are priorities in Johor, including the issue of raw water supply, access systems at Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex. 'The presentation also involved the operation of Pasir Gudang Hospital, land affairs as well as several pre-implementation projects that are currently being planned,' he said. — Bernama

‘Serve the people, not politics': Johor Regent tells assemblymen to stay focused and accountable

ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 16 — Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today reminded all assemblymen to carry out their responsibilities effectively by providing the best service to the people and the state. His Majesty said the state assemblymen must continue working to develop and improve the living standards of Johoreans, regardless of the election cycle. 'This is not an election season, and you have all been elected to serve the people. 'So, please focus on that responsibility. The people of Johor need assemblymen who are accountable and effective in serving them. 'Take care of your conduct and serve well so that Johor remains progressive and is admired and respected,' said Tunku Mahkota Ismail after officiating the fourth term of the 15th state legislative assembly session at the Sultan Ismail Building in Kota Iskandar here today. Tunku Mahkota Ismail also reminded all assemblymen not to use the state assembly to pursue personal conflicts or political interests, as it could make them a laughing stock. 'The state assembly serves as a platform to discuss policies, enact laws and most importantly, to champion the well being of the people of Johor,' he said, calling for all assemblymen to uphold the harmony which has been the tradition of the state assembly. Meanwhile, the Regent also stressed on the importance of Johor being administered by officers with high professional standards and skills. Tunku Mahkota Ismail reminded all that Johor is developing rapidly and that it is only appropriate to improve the standards of Johor Civil Service (JCS) officers. He said that as the backbone of the government in formulating policies, they should support the implementation of various initiatives and serve as a bridge between the state government and the people of Johor. 'They need to be equipped with global knowledge and leadership skills that are in line with today's needs. 'As an initial step, the state government through the Darul Ta'zim Permodalan Education Fund has taken the initiative to sponsor senior civil service officers in Johor to follow world-class professional development courses at international educational institutions, including Ivy League universities in the United States,' he said.
