Family pressure, money woes, mistrust fuel Johor's 2024 Muslim divorce surge
State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the main causes of divorce included lack of understanding, financial problems, irresponsible spouses, third-party involvement and interference by in-laws.
He noted that divorce claims or applications increased to 4,264 cases in 2024 from 4,042 in 2023, while validation of lafaz cerai (divorce pronouncements) edged up to 2,462 cases from 2,416.
Mohd Fared gave the figures when replying to Marina Ibrahim (PH-Skudai) during the Johor State Legislative Assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar today.
He added that fasakh (annulment) claims fell to 545 cases in 2024 compared with 675 in 2023, confirmation of cerai taklik (divorce by condition) dipped to 27 cases from 33, and khuluk (divorce initiated by the wife) applications held steady at eight cases.
Couples aged 26 to 35 accounted for the most filings last year with 2,838 cases, followed by those aged 36 to 45 (1,951), 46 to 55 (881), 18 to 25 (747), 56 to 65 (349) and 66 and above (124). — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA : Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has turned down Muda's offer to return as party president following his acquittal on corruption and money laundering charges, saying he needs more time to decide on the matter. Syed Saddiq, who temporarily stepped down as Muda president after his conviction by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in 2023, was offered the post in June when the Court of Appeal cleared him of all charges. 'I have informed the party's leadership that I need a little bit more time,' he said at an event here today. 'I want to spend time with my family, focus on my constituency work in Muar, and continue fundraising for local needs. 'I've already relayed my decision to the party leadership, and I will leave it at that.' he said. He was convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets and money laundering in November 2023. The former youth and sports minister was sentenced to seven years' jail, a RM10 million fine and two strokes of the rotan. The sentences were stayed pending an appeal to the Court of Appeal. On June 25, the Court of Appeal unanimously acquitted him after Justice Noorin Badaruddin said the prosecution had failed to prove the ingredients of the predicate charges of abetting in CBT and dishonest misappropriation. Noorin also said Syed Saddiq should have been acquitted without his defence being called during the trial. Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz then offered to return the party presidency to Syed Saddiq after stating that he had cleared his name in court. She said this was decided by Muda's central executive committee, which agreed that Syed Saddiq's return to leadership would strengthen the party, especially in gaining support ahead of the next general election.

S. Karunanithy takes helm as new Penang MACC director

Civil servants to receive one-off payouts for self-funded higher studies, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government has approved a one-off financial award for civil servants who pursue and obtain higher recognised academic qualifications at their own expense while in service. He said the incentives would benefit more than 91,672 public servants. 'The government has agreed to provide the Academic Recognition Award as a form of financial incentive to officers who begin and complete their studies, and attain higher recognised academic qualifications while in service, using their own funds. 'For this purpose, the government has allocated RM75.7 million, which will benefit 91,672 civil servants across all service schemes,' he said during his speech at the 20th Civil Service Premier Assembly (MAPPA XX) today. He added that recipients will receive RM1,250 for a doctoral degree, RM1,000 for a master's degree, RM750 for a bachelor's degree, and RM500 for a diploma or equivalent qualification. However, he noted that the awarding of the HPA is subject to stipulated conditions.
