Search for missing cockfighters begins at Philippine lake

MANILA: Search teams on Thursday began scouring a lake south of the Philippine capital Manila for dozens of cockfighters allegedly murdered by rogue police.
Fifteen police officers are under investigation over a spate of mysterious disappearances in 2022 in the country's huge cockfighting industry.
The case erupted back into the public consciousness last month with the televised appearance of a witness claiming to know where bodies had been submerged in Lake Taal, about two hours south of the capital.
As many as 100 people were murdered over their alleged involvement in match-fixing, killed by police moonlighting for an online cockfight operator, according to witness Julie "Dondon" Patidongan who spoke to broadcaster GMA.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla has since said that "multiple witnesses" could identify the location of the missing in the lake, which spans more than 230 square kilometres (89 square miles).
Justice department spokesman Dominic Clavano said Thursday the initial foray by the Philippine Coast Guard and national police was intended to lay the groundwork for future dives, likely at a depth of about 30 metres (98 feet).
"This (investigation) is a step in the right direction... but we will not stop here. This is not our only lead," he said at a press briefing.
Filipinos from all walks of life wager millions of dollars on matches every week between roosters who fight to the death with razor-sharp metal spurs tied to their legs.
Charlene Lasco, whose missing brother Ricardo was an agent for livestreamed cockfights, said the priority for victims' families was being able to lay their loved ones to rest.
"We are happy that (the government) is doing their best to locate (the bodies) and solve this case," she said at the national police headquarters in Manila.
"We are not the only victims here," she added, citing Patidongan's claims of 100 victims.
National Police Chief Nicolas Torre this week said authorities needed to act swiftly on the latest information.
"The typhoon season is coming in," he told journalists on Tuesday.
"We are moving fast to at least try to locate the bodies. We know that it is very, very challenging."
The justice minister said Friday he had requested technical assistance from Japan including help with mapping the lake bed, parts of which are as deep as 172 metres.
Japan's embassy in Manila told AFP it had received the request without providing further details.
But Torre believes the Philippines had the necessary equipment on hand to begin the search.
"We have a very, very robust shipping industry here and in other parts of the Philippines, so we can do it."
Cockfighting, banned in many other countries, survived coronavirus pandemic restrictions by going online, drawing many more gamblers who use their mobile phones to place wagers.

Five arrested in raid on cockfighting gang, RM3.28mil seized

KOTA KINABALU: Police have dismantled an illegal cockfighting gang involving Philippines-bred fighting cocks in Sabah's eastern district of Tawau. The operation involved two separate raids with total seizures amounting to RM3.28mil. Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said four foreign nationals and a local man, aged between 31 and 57, were arrested and 622 fighting cocks seized. Led by the department's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence, the raid was carried out at 2.30pm under the Integrated Khazanah operation in Kampung Apas Parit and Kampung Membalua. Officers from the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Tawau's Battalion 14 of the General Operations Force and enforcement personnel from the Veterinary Services Department Tawau branch were also involved. Azmi said the first raid took place at a house in Kampung Apas Parit, Jalan Apas Parit, and led to the arrest of four men, two Indonesians and two Filipinos, aged between 31 and 52. 'A total of 470 fighting cocks were found at the premises, along with 40 cockfighting blades, 180 containers of vitamins, and 500 specially-designed cages used for the birds,' he said in a statement on Sunday (July 20). The second raid was at Kampung Membalua off Jalan Apas, resulting in the arrest of a 57-year-old local man, along with the seizure of 152 live fighting cocks, also believed to have been imported illegally. All five individuals are being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Animal Enactment 2015 for the possession of animals without a licence. The foreign nationals are also being probed under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid travel documents and working without permits. They are also being investigated under Section 6 of the Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 for the possession of sharp blades suspected to be used for cockfighting purposes. 'This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat all forms of illegal cockfighting and gambling activities in the state,' said Azmi.

According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the agency said it continues to receive reports of alleged Filipino human trafficking victims forced to work in scam hubs. "In response, the DFA works with its Foreign Service Posts, especially in Mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia), to persistently devote efforts and resources in extending all possible assistance to our Filipinos in distress, while requesting the authorities of the host countries for their invaluable cooperation,' it said. Rawang rep urges Putrajaya to offer RM10m bounty for Jho Low, calls fugitive ‘symbol of a compromised system'

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat has today urged Putrajaya to offer a RM10 million reward for credible information leading to the return of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low. He said Low's return is important so that he can be tried and punished accordingly in court like former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. 'If this RM10 million reward can lead to the return of a central figure who has long vanished from public view, it would be a worthy investment in justice. 'It would also send a clear message to the world that Malaysia does not compromise when it comes to combating large-scale corruption,' he said in a statement here. Chua said the amount of the proposed reward is only a fraction of the over RM29 billion in 1MDB assets already recovered by Malaysian authorities. He pointed out that similar reward mechanisms are used by nations like the United States, India and China to apprehend terrorists, or criminals involved in cross-border financial crimes such as money laundering and corruption. 'We must not forget that Jho Low is not just a suspect – he is the symbol of a compromised system, manipulated institutions, and stolen national wealth. 'How can justice truly be served if the man holding the key to the entire scandal remains at large, living a life of luxury abroad?' the Selayang PKR chief asked. Chua added that Jho Low's return is critical to ensuring the 1MDB investigations and prosecutions can proceed without disruption. 'This will help prevent incidents like DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) from recurring due to the absence of key witnesses and insufficient evidence,' he said. It was reported yesterday that Low, has supposedly been located in a luxury neighbourhood in Shanghai, China, where he is said to be living under a false identity and working with entities linked to the Chinese government. Low is allegedly now residing in Green Hills, an exclusive enclave in Shanghai — by taking a Greek alias of Constantinos Achilles Veis using a fake Australian passport.
