Roof collapses at popular British holiday hotspot airport
Holidaymakers cheated death this afternoon after a roof collapsed at Majorca's Palma Airport.
Glass and other construction debris crashed to the floor of the arrivals lounge at around 4.30pm local time.
Airport workers said afterwards it was a 'miracle' no-one had been seriously injured. An investigation into the near miss was underway this evening.
Spanish airports authority AENA blamed the collapse on debris from construction work falling onto a glass roof near the entrance to the baggage claim area and bringing it down.
A spokesman told local press: 'People in charge of the airport are already analysing what happened in order to adopt the appropriate measures and to determine responsibilities if necessary.'
Airport security staff cleared the affected area as holidaymakers watched on from nearby, clearly shocked at the damage that had been done and the fact the collapse could have had fatal consequences.
One English-speaking woman could be overheard saying 'Oh my God' as a cloud of dust rose from the ground where part of the roof had fallen.
Local Juan Antonio Bauza dubbed Palma Airport 'the worst in Spain' in a social media post this evening.
The sports reporter said on X: 'I imagine someone will have to assume responsibility for this.'
Renovation works at the airport have been criticised by workers and air passengers. More Trending
In January, a falling panel and weather conditions led to dust entering the terminal and complaints.
One airport worker told local press at the time: 'Neither employees or passengers could breathe and many people were slipping because of the dust on the ground.
'Having to work in these sorts of conditions is disgraceful.'
Another told Majorcan paper Diario de Mallorca: 'Passengers had to put masks on because of the air contamination.'

Kate was joined on the trip by her 22-year-old model daughter Lila, and Lila's friend Bella Tilbury. Earlier in the week, Kate opted for neutral-coloured swimwear but covered up with a white blouse as she hit the beach. Croydon-born Kate left her signature blonde locks in loose waves over her shoulders and pulled on a pair of sunglasses as she strode across the sands. While the supermodel's swimwear gave a glimpse at her toned figure, passers-by were more bemused by the presence of her brown Hermes Birkin accessory slung over her arm. The coveted designer bag took pride of place on her left arm, with Kate leaving the clasp open for easy access to her beach essentials. She was seen making her way away from the crystal-clear see waters up to a more hilly part of the beach in Formentera. Kate was with look-a-like daughter Lila, who has followed in her modelling footsteps. Later in the day, they were spotted taking a trip on a private boat. Emirates bans use of common travel item onboard flights from October
Emirates bans use of common travel item onboard flights from October The Dubai-based carrier has introduced a ban on a common travel item onboard its flights from October with passengers warned to be aware of the new rules In response to escalating safety concerns an airline has enforced a ban during flights. Emirates has declared that from October 1, 2025, passengers will no longer be allowed to use power banks whilst in-flight. This comes after travel experts warned that a dead phone battery could potentially bar people from travelling. Under the new rules passengers may carry one power bank with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours but it must remain switched off throughout the flight. Charging power banks using the aircraft's power outlets will also be prohibited. Separately Brits have also been warned to check one document carefully as 12 Spanish airports face strikes. Power banks must be housed in the seat pocket or under the seat in front of passengers and placing them in overhead lockers or checked luggage will no longer be allowed. Other airlines like TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, and Jet2 have also banned certain food items on their flights. Emirates stressed that these measures are intended to enhance passenger safety by enabling cabin crew to quickly handle any battery-related emergencies. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . The worry stems from the nature of power banks, which employ lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries that pose a risk of overheating due to a process known as thermal runaway, reports the Liverpool Echo. This happens when a battery generates heat faster than it can dissipate, potentially leading to fires, explosions, and the emission of harmful gases. While many smartphones have built-in protections to prevent overcharging some power banks lack these safety features, increasing the risk onboard. Emirates has issued a statement saying: "After a comprehensive safety review Emirates is taking a firm and proactive stance to mitigate risk when it comes to power banks onboard. "There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry. "Power banks primarily utilise lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries and their function is as a portable battery pack designed to recharge devices on the go. "The batteries contain lithium ions suspended in an electrolyte solution. The ions flow through the electrolyte, travelling back and forth between two electrodes as the battery charges and discharges. "If the battery is overcharged or damaged it may result in 'thermal runaway.' "Thermal runaway in batteries is a self-accelerating process where heat generation within a battery cell exceeds its ability to dissipate heat, leading to a rapid and uncontrollable temperature increase. "This can result in dangerous consequences like fire, explosions, and the release of toxic gases. "Most phones and sophisticated lithium battery-powered devices have an internal trickle system which slowly adds current into the battery to prevent overcharging but many basic power banks may not have this safeguard, increasing the risk. "All power banks are subject to the new rules onboard Emirates. "Emirates new regulations will significantly reduce risks associated with power banks by prohibiting their use while onboard the aircraft. "Storing power banks in accessible locations within the cabin ensures that in the rare event of a fire trained cabin crew can quickly respond and extinguish the fire. "Safety is one of Emirates' core values and a cornerstone of all operations and practices. Emirates is committed to maintaining and improving levels of safety on an ongoing basis, safeguarding customers and staff at all times." Who is Georgina Rodriguez? Georgina Rodriguez grew up in Jaca, a city in northeastern Spain and part of the province of Huesca, near the Pyrenees. She was born to a Spanish mum and an Argentinian dad. Georgina learned dance before changing careers to modelling after studying English in London. The Sun revealed that her father is a convicted cocaine trafficker named Jorge Rodriguez, who spent ten years in jail. The 29-year-old was first spotted on a string of dates with then-Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo towards the end of 2016. Georgina has claimed that her first meeting with the football star was "love at first sight." "Our first meeting was at Gucci, where I worked as a sales assistant," she recalled in an interview with The Sun . "Days later, we saw each other again at another brand's event. "It was then that we could talk in a relaxed atmosphere, outside my work environment. It was love at first sight for both." News of her relationship with the footballer began to emerge in November 2016 when they were snapped walking around Disneyland Paris arm-in-arm and publicly showing their affection for one another. And despite putting on a disguise, the Italian magazine Chi was able to identify Ronaldo as he cuddled up to his new love interest. Georgina gave birth to baby daughter Alana Martina on November 12, 2017, with Ronaldo posting a picture on Instagram, writing: "Alana Martina is just born! Both Geo and Alana are doing great! We are all very happy!'" And just over two years later, the pair were forced to deny rumours that they had got hitched in a low-key ceremony in Morocco. 3 Cristiano Ronaldo previously shared a cosy family picture of him cuddling three of his children with Georgina Rodriguez Credit: Instagram How did Georgina Rodriguez and Cristiano Ronaldo meet? A month later, Ronaldo confirmed in an interview that he and Georgina Rodriguez were expecting their first baby together. When asked by Spanish news outlet El Mundo whether the player was 'happy' to have another child on the way, he replied: 'Yes, very much.' Georgina gave birth to baby daughter Alana Martina on November 12, 2017. Four years, later Cristiano and Georgina announced they were expecting twins. But tragically, after Georgina gave birth in April 2022, the pair announced that their baby boy had passed away as they paid tribute online. Ronaldo wrote on social media: "It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. "It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. "Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness. "We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. The couple have since named their baby daughter Bella Esmeralda.
