Dear Coleen: I've lost my alcoholic daughter to a vile abuser
"He wouldn't leave her alone and we went to the police for a harassment order, but she started seeing him again in secret."
Dear Coleen:
My daughter, 27, is seeing a chap who is eight years older, and who she once worked with.
She moved in with him and on certain days his two daughters came to stay, and they adored her. At the start, he seemed a nice guy, but then he began to show his true colours.
Over time, her dad and I, and her brothers, saw less and less of her and we discovered that when they'd both had alcohol they were toxic with each other. I picked her up at all hours to bring her home and, eventually, after he'd smashed up his Christmas tree and spat in her face, she came back home.
However, he wouldn't leave her alone and we went to the police for a harassment order, but she started seeing him again in secret. He shows her no affection in public and she can't be with his children in his house, as their mum banned it.
This man has alcohol issues and has a hold over her. She's unfit to work as am I because of all the stress. We were so close, but she's been an alcoholic since they met. She stopped for a few months when they split, but she's drinking non-stop now, using her benefit money.
I've lost my only daughter and it's hard to sit back and let her live her life. How do I cope?

Coleen says:
I really feel for you, and as a mother myself I understand how hard it is to let go when she seems to be on a self-destruct mission. However, you have to bring the focus back to yourself. I think you'd benefit from therapy, so you can talk this out with someone who can help, and also talk to Al-Anon (al-anonuk.org.uk), which offers brilliant support to anyone affected by someone else's drinking.
The really difficult thing to accept when it comes to your daughter's drinking is that you can't fix things for her; she has to do that for herself, and she has to be ready and willing. Many recovering alcoholics describe having an epiphany or reaching rock bottom before realising they had to get sober. I hope she gets that wake-up call.
What you can do is say that while you understand she's free to make own choices, you're worried about her and it's hard to be around her while she's living like this but you love her and will be here for her when she comes out of it.
The danger in going on about how vile her boyfriend is you'll push her towards him and away from you. It's vital she feels she can come to you if she wants to leave. If you're concerned about abuse, contact Refuge, which has a 24-hour helpline (0808 2000 247).
Get all the help and support you can, to feel stronger. It'll be good for you to talk to others who've been in your situation and come out the other side.

Police this week confirmed they had spoken to more than 400 people during door-to-door inquiries and had poured over 2,000 hours of CCTV footage. Chief Inspector Alex Hatrick said: "My thoughts are with Cole's family and friends at this time and officers will continue to offer them support. "As our enquiries progress, we are ensuring the family is kept informed with all aspects of the investigation. "A dedicated team of detectives is working to piece together Cole's movements leading up to his death. Pervert pensioner spied on woman in Edinburgh McDonald's
David Levenson was spotted peering over the cubicle and watching the victim urinating at the fast food outlet at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre in Edinburgh in August last year. A pervert pensioner has been caught spying on a woman while she used a toilet at a McDonald's takeaway - just four months after he was sentenced for a similar offence. David Levenson was spotted peering over the cubicle and watching the victim urinating at the fast food outlet at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre in Edinburgh in August last year. The disgusted woman was said to have looked up and seen "a flash of white hair" as the sleazy 73-year-old attempted to conceal himself within the cubicle. Levenson, from the city's Broughton area, fled the area but was quickly identified by cops after he was caught on the restaurant's CCTV system. The OAP has now been warned he faces a jail sentence after pleading guilty to concealing himself within the McDonald's toilets and watching the woman urinate when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. Prosecutor Gillian Koren told the court the victim attended the McDonald's outlet at the capital's Cameron Toll Shopping Centre with her children at around 12.30pm on August 11 last year. Ms Koren said while waiting on her family's food order to be prepared the woman used the toilet facilities. The fiscal said: "When [the woman] was using the toilet she became aware of shadows on the floor coming from above her and she saw the accused's head shoot down and saw a flash of white hair. "She was shaken and appalled by the incident and she immediately left the cubicle area. "The accused was seen, after being discovered by [the woman], to quickly leave the toilet area. "The witness spoke to staff and the police were contacted immediately." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Officers attended at the restaurant and soon identified Levenson after viewing CCTV footage of him fleeing the scene. Solicitor Kirsty Harper asked the court to grant her client bail due to him being the carer for his "frail" long term partner and remanding him in custody would be"a punitive measure on her". Sheriff John Cook said: "This is a particularly serious matter having regard to the fact you have an analogous previous conviction for it. "A custodial sentence is very much at the forefront of the court's mind in light of that." Sheriff Cook noted Levenson was already subject to the requirements of the sex offenders register and said his name would again be added for this conviction. Sentence was deferred to next month. Levenson gave the middle finger sign and swore at the waiting press as he left the court building following his guilty plea. The OAP was caught carrying out a similar act at a McDonald's in the capital's city centre in August 2023 and handed himself into police following a public appeal. He admitted the offence when he appeared in court last March and was sentenced four weeks later - just four months before carrying out his latest offence. On that occasion Levenson was placed on the sex offenders register for 12 months and ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work.

Callous woman who stole £22k from elderly father-in-law to fund 'dream lifestyle' dodges jail
Karin Lindsay admitted embezzlement at Hamilton Sheriff Court. A woman who claimed she was living a dream lifestyle after she stole £22,500 from her elderly father-in-law has been spared jail. Karin Lindsay, 50, was given power of attorney for John Lindsay, 87, and had full control over two bank accounts. She used money to pay for legitimate expenses but plundered thousands for personal gain between December 2020 and October 2022. Lindsay, of Lanark, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted embezzlement. She was handed a £1,800 compensation order and placed on a community payback order for two years. She will also have an electronic tag fitted for eight months. Her deceit only emerged when she suddenly told family members she no longer wanted to carry out the role. She told her father-in-law: "Dad, I have spent all your money." Callous Lindsay later told one stunned family member: "You know he has given me a lifestyle I could only have imagined." Depute fiscal Neil Thomson told the court: "The accused exercised power of attorney and regularly transferred the funds from his two bank accounts into an account operated by herself. "In October 2022 when her father-in-law was suffering ill health and in the presence of family members told him that she was giving up power of attorney for him." The prosecutor added: "The matter was thereafter reported to police and it was established a substantial sum had been transferred from his accounts into one operated by the accused. "Some of the money had been used for the wellbeing of Mr Lindsay but the figure now on the indictment is the sum of money which she had taken for her own personal use." Alana Campbell, defending, said some of the money had already been paid back. She added: "She finds herself in a difficult and serious situation. She is well aware what she did was wrong and regrets her actions. "She has let herself down and ultimately let her father-in-law down." Sentencing Lindsay, Sheriff Linda Nicolson said: "It is obviously a serious matter given the nature of the offence and the sum involved. "Given you were in a position of trust that has to be marked. "However I am satisfied that I can step back from imposing a custodial sentence. This sentence will be a direct alternative to custody." Lindsay originally faced claims she had pocketed £45,096 but prosecutors accepted her guilty plea to the lesser amount.
