BMW 3 Series Review 2025
But for how much longer? Just like the Golf, 911, and S-Class, the 3 Series faces a somewhat uncertain future as electrification really takes hold. You want a fully electric Three? It's currently called a BMW i4. So best to savour this seventh-generation 'G20' BMW 3 Series, just in case.

It'd be a surprise if they did. At the launch of the facelift in 2022, phrases like 'core of the brand' and 'a BMW icon' were thrown around at will.
But don't forget BMW is launching another 'Neue Klasse' saloon in the coming years. Last time that happened – in the 1960s – it shored up the company's finances and gave the brand a whole new identity, bringing the Hofmeister Kink design flourish with it. The company books don't need any help this time around, but the all-electric second coming of the Neue Klasse is reimagining BMW's cars from the ground up, right down to making interior trim out of recycled fishing nets. True fact. That's the future. What about now?
Launched in 2018, the G20 3 Series was treated to a mid-life facelift in 2022 that mostly spruced things up on a surface level, keeping the core components just as they were. This was good news. However, it did also bring with it BMW's swish curved touchscreen infotainment setup; the plus side of that is a dazzling display that'll make anyone coo, however addicted (or not) they are to their smartphones. The downside is the inevitable hoovering up of physical buttons, climate control included. A similar move proved the undoing of one of the Three's fellow pillars, the VW Golf.
Because that facelift was mostly cosmetic, BMW then tweaked the G20 once again in 2024. This time it updated the iDrive to run the new BMW Operating System 8.5, tuned the chassis for a more comfortable ride, and fitted the plug-in hybrid 330e with a new Gen5 19.5kWh battery for faster charging and 63 miles of all-electric range.

At the same time, the diesel engines were also removed from sale in the UK. Shame.
Without wishing to jump right to the end, yes. This particular automotive pillar remains resolute, thanks in part to the dynamics team knowing a good thing when they've got it and not over-complicating it. Same goes for the design team, for that matter. Although as previously mentioned, the engine range in the UK was simplified with the 2024 update. The 320d and M340d diesels were dropped, as was the 330i petrol.
That means you've now got the 320i and M340i as your pure petrol options – the latter with 48V mild hybrid boost as well as standard xDrive four-wheel-drive. Then the updated 330e is your full plug-in hybrid. Its on-paper stats have always made it essentially unbeatable in the rep car arena, even minimising the appeal of the 320d, once the prefect of that class.
Of course, we're also just talking about the 3 Series saloon here, but if you need huge boot space then you can upgrade to the 3 Series Touring. We've given that its own review at this link. And there's the small matter of the snouty M3. You can read all about the 523bhp saloon by clicking here, or the ultimate dog wagon – the M3 Touring – by clicking these words. How much does a standard 3 Series cost these days?
At the time of writing in mid-2025, the range kicks off with a 320i in entry-level Sport trim costing £41,310. The plug-in hybrid 330e in the same trim starts from £47,185, while you'll need to pay at least £62,080 for the six-cylinder M340i in its fancy M Sport Pro trim. What can claim to rival a 3 Series, then?
Well, the Audi A4 has morphed into the A5, but it's still a strong competitor. Then you've got the Mercedes C-Class and Alfa Romeo Giulia. The Volkswagen Passat is now estate-only, and Volvo also only offers its big-booted V60 rather than the S60 saloon.
Don't care about the badge on the back? You could have a giant Skoda Superb for similar money.

'There's no bad way to buy a BMW 3 Series'
It'd be a sad day if BMW screwed up the 3 Series. Delightfully, that day is still yet to come. The first mid-life refresh for the G20-gen car dripped in lots more digitalisation and touchscreen reliance but without massively buggering the whole thing up.
The second update in 2024 gave it a slightly more refined ride, but the Three still drives as adeptly as ever. The engine range is now less diverse, but what we've got remains impressive. Have a plug-in hybrid if you want, but it's not essential. The 6cyl M340i remains the epitome of the modern sports saloon. There's no bad way to buy a BMW 3 Series.

Lexus stepped up its game with the 2025 NX, and after a week behind the wheel of the 2025 NX 350 F Sport, I have some interesting thoughts… BMW sought to purchase Rolls-Royce as part of its expansion in the late 1990s. Widely considered the best M5 manual transmission model, the E39 M5 wasn't the most powerful, but it was the most engaging. Sony Honda Mobility's first electric vehicle, the Afeela 1, has entered pre-production at Honda's East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio. Engineers at the facility are using this stage to fine-tune part fit, paint finish, and assembly precision ahead of full production, scheduled to begin in 2026. The move brings the tech-heavy sedan one step closer to market after more than two years of joint development between the two companies. What is the Sony Honda Mobility Afeela 1? Watch More From Concept To Factory Floor The Afeela 1 was first shown in concept form in 2023, promising an emphasis on connected technology, advanced driver assistance, and entertainment features powered by Sony's electronics expertise. The production car will be offered in two trims: Origin, starting around $89,900, and Signature, from about $102,900. Both use dual 180-kW motors for all-wheel drive, a 91-kWh battery, and target roughly 300 miles of range. Deliveries for the Signature are expected in mid-2026, with the Origin following in 2027. By providing your email address, you agree that it may be used pursuant to Arena Group's Privacy Policy. We may receive compensation. High-Tech Manufacturing Goals East Liberty, long known for building the Honda CR-V and Acura models, is integrating new assembly techniques to accommodate the sedan's unique design and sensor-laden body. Over 40 sensors, including LiDAR, will feed data to the car's driver-assist systems, while Sony's AI-based interface is designed to personalize the in-car experience. The company says pre-production allows its engineers to validate these systems in a real-world manufacturing environment before the first customer cars roll off the line. Reservations in California are already open for $200 deposits, as detailed in our earlier coverage of whether the Afeela 1 can compete with Tesla. Market Context And Challenges Honda's EV strategy has been under close scrutiny. With demand growth slowing and tariffs looming on some imported models, the automaker is re-evaluating parts of its electric rollout. Those considerations affect its U.S. plants as well, making the Afeela 1's success an important test case for the partnership's future. As noted in our recent report on how Honda is shifting gears on EVs, the company is trying to balance ambitious technology projects with shifting consumer demand and cost pressures. Looking Ahead The Afeela 1 is positioned for the premium EV market, where established players and new entrants are vying for buyers who expect both cutting-edge tech and top-tier build quality. Pre-production in Ohio is the clearest sign yet that Sony Honda Mobility is confident in its manufacturing readiness, though the next year will determine if the project can meet its ambitious timelines and performance promises. GM Plans to Resurrect Self-Driving Car Project With a Twist
By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. Lexus stepped up its game with the 2025 NX, and after a week behind the wheel of the 2025 NX 350 F Sport, I have some interesting thoughts… GM is bringing Cruise back to life after its dramatic end General Motors (GM) has begun reigniting its defunct self-driving Cruise business by approaching some of the subsidiary's former employees for recruitment. However, the automaker is said to be pivoting from Cruise's original mission of creating a robotaxi into manufacturing autonomous cars for personal use, Bloomberg reports. The Cruise revival would begin with GM developing a vehicle with hands-free, eyes-free driving with a human in the driver's seat. Next, Cruise would create a car capable of operating without a human behind the wheel. Former Tesla Autopilot chief Sterling Anderson, now GM's Executive Vice President of Global Product and Chief Product Officer, detailed Cruise's updated roadmap during a meeting on August 6, according to those familiar with the matter. GM confirmed with Bloomberg that it's using human-led vehicles equipped with lidar on public roads to gather data for its upcoming self-driving technology. GM spokesperson Chaiti Sen said: 'We're accelerating the development of autonomous driving technology capable of operating without active human oversight,' according to Bloomberg. The original rise and fall of GM's Cruise Technology entrepreneur Kyle Vogt started Cruise in 2013, and the company was acquired by GM in 2016 for $1 billion. Subsequently, Cruise received a $30 billion valuation in 2021 and collected over $7 billion in investments. In 2022, Cruise said that over the next few years, it would launch tens of thousands of its Origin self-driving pods that were essentially a lounge on wheels. This ambition came to a grinding halt when a series of collisions involving Cruise's autonomous Chevrolet Bolt test cars in San Francisco captured the public's attention and led to California revoking its testing permits in late 2023. The most notable collision occurred in October 2023 when a woman was struck by a human-led vehicle in a crosswalk and thrown in the path of a Cruise car. The Cruise model then ran the pedestrian over and dragged her over 20 feet as it attempted to pull over. Cruise later paid a $500,000 fine to the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California after omitting reference to the event's secondary movement and dragging of a pedestrian in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report. GM spent over $10 billion on Cruise after acquiring the company in 2016. While Cruise suspended its robotaxi operations in late 2023 after having its California permits revoked, it folded the division into its in-house work on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like Super Cruise. In February, GM let around half of its Cruise staff go after it was reported that the subsidiary had nearly 2,300 employees at the end of 2024. Final thoughts The robotaxi business's increasingly competitive landscape and GM's previous losses in the niche have put Cruise on a different path in the self-driving race. While many manufacturers appear to be prioritizing partnerships with companies like Uber and Lyft to integrate their autonomous technology into the rideshare industry, GM is one of the few legacy automakers looking to make a serious push to achieve Level 5 autonomy in passenger vehicles. While the renewed initiative is in its early phases, it positions GM uniquely among its rivals. About the Author Cody Carlson View Profile

Ian Callum Wants To Turn The Aston Martin Vanquish Into A Strangely Beautiful Wagon
Former Aston Martin Designer Wants Another Shot Ian Callum is arguably one of the finest automotive designers of our time, having worked on several of the most timeless cars of the last 40 years, including the millennial Aston Martin Vanquish. Now in charge of his own design firm, Callum Designs, he's proposed a more practical take on the V12-powered grand tourer, revealing a concept for a Vanquish Shooting Brake, something that Zagato did back in 2017. However, that design was based on the Vanquish of the time, and Callum's is based on the one he penned for 2001, trying to find a place somewhere in the middle. There's just one thing holding this car back from becoming a reality: an interested buyer. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:09 Full screen Chevrolet says a next-gen Camaro is still possible. What could it look like? Watch More A Slightly Odd Wagon The Vanquish 25 Shooting Brake, as it's been named, is listed on the 'Portfolio' section of the Callum Designs site, where the firm shares the ideas it has for reimagining future cars in the hopes that wealthy buyers will take a liking to them and ask for one to be commissioned. These are purely conceptual until that happens, so we won't see Callum's Vanquish wagon on the lawns of Pebble Beach at Monterey Car Week this month. If it ever does get there, it'll certainly look unique. The modernized lower side intakes look like something Jaguar might have produced around this time (where Ian Callum wound up after being contracted by Aston Martin), and the vented hood is also reminiscent of that era's Jag XKR. The diamond-faced wheels add a touch of modernity, as does the beveled glasshouse, and the side skirts with their lower leading edge and gilled flics call to mind single-seat racecars. At the back, the rear view will be narrow, but the car will look dramatic, with the muscular rear arches flowing into an upturned ducktail spoiler. Further down, more carbon fiber either side of the redesigned diffuser reduces the visual height of the car, though from the front three-quarter angle, this vehicle almost has a crossover-like stance to it. In profile, the front two-thirds of the car looks particularly modern, but the rear gives this writer images of a BMW Z1 from the late 1980s, and the wheels make me think of a Tesla, especially with red brake calipers behind them. Does Anybody Want A V12 Wagon? Whether we agree on the looks or not, Callum would surely allow some tweaks to be made, promoting this project as something that would be made 'exclusively for you,' calling it 'a bespoke masterpiece built around your vision, down to the last stitch' – but the looks aren't as exciting as the concept of a practical V12-powered GT that can fit skiis and luggage, something that Ferrari customers have desired and received since the FF. That must be enticing to someone, and the fact that there will certainly be far fewer than the 99 Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brakes out there surely counts for something. Naturally, this sort of bespoke creation will be deep in six- (if not seven-) figure range. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile
