‘Complete surprise' — Bayern Munich shocked at losing chance to get Florian Wirtz as Liverpool boss Arne Slot might have closed the deal
According to a detailed report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich was left stunned by Florian Wirtz's decision to move to Liverpool FC.
The club had met with Wirtz and his family expecting to finalize a deal, only to be told that move was not going to happen. As for what changed the playmaker's mind, Liverpool coach Arne Slot appears to have had a lot to do with the change of the heart:
A meeting had taken place earlier this week, with Florian Wirtz, Uli Hoeneß, and Max Eberl all sitting at the table. Bayern had tried everything one last time. Yesterday afternoon, Hans-Joachim Wirtz called Hoeneß and Eberl and told them that after five years at Bayer Leverkusen, his son no longer sees himself in the Bundesliga. He wanted the next step, the next challenge. Therefore, he would move to the Premier League, to Liverpool.
The decision came as a complete surprise to Bayern. There was tremendous confidence that Wirtz would move to Munich. After numerous discussions with Wirtz himself and his father, Bayern were of the opinion that the player doesn't see himself in a different league yet. They thought his plan was to continue maturing in Germany before moving abroad in a few years - that's why they were very certain and were prepared to put together the biggest transfer package in the club's history
Florian Wirtz also had long discussions with Bayern coach Vincent Kompany and Liverpool coach Arne Slot. Slot is said to have impressed Wirtz with his ideas.

All Bayern Munich can do is dust itself off and prep for the next pursuit. The club really wanted Wirtz, but will have to move on and try to find ways to improve the squad without adding the man, who many believe is Germany's top talent at the moment.
The news that Bayern Munich had coughed up the Florian Wirtz transfer was shocking. Even more stunning was that it was Liverpool FC, who ultimately won the Germany international's heart. So...what next? Let's rehash how it all went down, why it happened, and then talk about what might on tap next for the Bavarians, who have to start their transfer dealings all over again. Mayor would build town hall balcony if Elversberg get promoted
Elversberg fans stand in their block during the German 2nd Bundesliga soccer match between Eintracht Braunschweig and SV Elversberg, at Eintracht Stadium. The mayor of Spiesen-Elversberg said that the city would build a balcony in the town hall for celebrations in the event SV Elversberg gets promoted to the Bundesliga. Swen Pförtner/dpa The mayor of Spiesen-Elversberg said that the city would build a balcony in the town hall for celebrations in the event SV Elversberg gets promoted to the Bundesliga. "There's no town hall balcony. We don't have one, but we would build one. If we have to, believe me, we can do it," mayor Bernd Huf said. Advertisement In Germany, football clubs traditionally celebrate their titles and other major achievements from the town hall balcony while surrounded by fans. Elversberg will face Heidenheim, who finished the Bundesliga in 16th, in the away first leg on Thursday ahead of the second leg next Monday for a chance to play in the Bundesliga. They would be the first club in the Bundesliga from Saarland in 32 years after the much larger Saarbrücken were relegated in 1993. It is just their second season in the second division after spending only one in the third tier, after promotion from the fourth division in 2022. Advertisement The club are from the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg, which has a population of around 13,000 and no train station, in the south-western Saarland state. Their average attendance is 9,000 fans per game. Huf admitted that a lot of work would have to be done if the club gets promoted to the top tier, "but that was clear to everyone. We would have to do that even if we stayed in the second division." For him, the "biggest step the club has taken was promotion to the second division" to play alongside German giants such as Cologne, Nuremberg, Hamburg SV and Dusseldorf.

Dietmar Hamann makes Florian Wirtz prediction after Liverpool agrees transfer fee
Dietmar Hamann has predicted that Liverpool 's supporters will "love" compatriot Florian Wirtz after the Reds agreed a fee with Bayer Leverkusen for the Germany international. After weeks of negotiations, the Reds committed a guaranteed initial £100 million ($135 million) to the transfer, while the fee could rise to £116 million ($157 million) if various add-on clauses are met. Wirtz was the subject of interest from Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but he favored a move to Liverpool, emphasizing just how appealing the Reds are to join right now. Advertisement Hamann, who made 280 appearances for Liverpool, is confident that Wirtz will be a success on Merseyside. 'I think he's the best player we've (Germany) got," Hamann said, as quoted by Rousing the Kop. "And he's... well, obviously he won't be cheap, but I think he's a player who makes other players better. But Wirtz is somebody, because if you look at the team now, Frimpong, I think he's valued at 40 million, he's coming for, he came to Leverkusen for probably half the money. Advertisement "And part of the reason why all the team is now worth probably a double of what they were worth before is Wirtz, because he brings them into play. 'He's got a great eye for his teammates, he's got a brilliant touch, he can finish himself. And he always got an eye for the pass. And obviously one thing is seeing the pass, the other thing is executing. But he does both. "For me, he's in the position, he's probably the best player in Europe at the moment. And he played in a team that finished, well, they were 16th or 17th when Alonso took over. So they end up winning the league the season after, this year they finished second. And if he comes to a team, which is even better than Leverkusen, I think it could be a perfect match. And I don't think it will take too long, if he does come here, which I think he will, before the punters love him here. Advertisement 'And the thing, why I think he will be a success, is that he can look after himself. He's like a street kid. So he won't shirk a challenge. "He will be looked after by his teammates, I'm pretty sure, because he will be one of the main players next season. But if he needs to, he can look after himself. And he won't be worried, he won't be afraid of any physical presence shown against him.'

Liverpool copies Trent Alexander-Arnold move with Johnny Heitenga statement
Liverpool issued a blunt farewell message to Johnny Heitinga after he accepted an offer to become Ajax's new head coach. Heitinga only joined the Reds a year ago, but the chance to take charge of the club he made over 200 appearances for proved too tempting to resist. Advertisement Heitinga, a former Everton defender, has signed a two-year contract with Ajax, ignoring advice from Arne Slot, who had told the 41-year-old to continue his development as coach at Anfield for one more year. "Liverpool FC can confirm John Heitinga is to depart the club to take up the role of Ajax head coach," a Liverpool statement said. "The 41-year-old leaves the Reds after one season in the backroom team, operating as assistant coach to Arne Slot. John leaves with our gratitude and appreciation for his role in our 2024-25 Premier League title win." The Liverpool statement did not include well-wishes for the future, which was also the case when the Reds confirmed Alexander-Arnold's exit. "Liverpool FC can confirm an offer has been accepted for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid for his transfer upon the opening of the June transfer window," a statement published on Friday said. "The full-back is now set to join the La Liga club ahead of the expiry of his Reds contract this summer. "Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes." Advertisement Heitinga went against Slot's recommendation in taking the Ajax job, after the Liverpool head coach responded to a question about Ajax's interest in him last week by recommending that he should stay on Merseyside for now. 'If Ajax would be smart, they would consider him. He is ready to take on a job like that,' Slot told reporters last week. 'If John is smart, he would stay one more season.'
