Johnny Lim becomes first Chinese Lieutenant General in MAF history
KUALA LUMPUR — Major General Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng made history in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) by becoming the first Chinese officer to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
In a statement today, the MAF said the promotion ceremony was officiated by Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar yesterday and witnessed by all service chiefs.
According to the statement, the Melaka-born officer had his early education at St Francis Primary School, Melaka, from 1973 to 1978, before continuing his studies at St Francis Secondary School, Melaka, from 1979 to 1983.
Lim joined the Officer Cadet Training Programme under the 25th Regular Commissioning Course and subsequently underwent military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, before being commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment.
The statement added that the promotion reflects the MAF's commitment to the principles of meritocracy and inclusiveness in recruitment and career development.
'It is also hoped that this will encourage greater participation from all ethnic groups in military careers, making the MAF a leading example of the 'Unity in Diversity' concept and national unity,' the statement said. — BERNAMA

NEW DELHI: Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to China this week for talks with his regional counterparts, New Delhi said Tuesday. Ties between the world's two most populous nations have improved in recent months, after hitting a low in 2020 over a deadly clash between their troops on the Himalayan border. Singh will join fellow defence ministers in the eastern city of Qingdao for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit starting Wednesday. Wang said relations have 'seen some positive developments' since the two countries' leaders met last year, China's foreign ministry said. Beijing has granted permission to Indian pilgrims wishing to trek to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a site holy to Hindus and Buddhists, for the first time since the deadly 2020 clash. The rival countries have also agreed to expedite resuming direct flights.

China touts ‘proactive attitude' over drug control after US criticism
BEIJING: China touted its 'proactive attitude' towards drug governance on Tuesday, a day after it tightened controls over two chemicals that could be used to make fentanyl. The fentanyl trade has long been a thorn in the side of relations between China and the United States, with Washington accusing Beijing of turning a blind eye, something it denies. China added two previously unclassified precursors -- 4-piperidone and 1-boc-4-piperidone -- to a list of substances subjected to stricter regulation from July 20, a statement said on Monday. 'This move is an independent initiative by the Chinese government to fulfil its obligations as a signatory to the UN drug control conventions,' foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular briefing when asked if the move was done in cooperation with the United States. 'It aims to strictly regulate precursor chemicals and reflects... its role as a responsible major country,' he added. The US and China this month agreed to a temporary truce in a standoff that saw tariffs hiked to eye-watering levels and upended global supply chains. In May, Washington and Beijing agreed to drastically reduce these tit-for-tat tariffs for 90 days, but the US additional tariff rate remained higher than China's because it includes a 20 percent levy over President Donald Trump's complaints about Chinese exports of chemicals used to make fentanyl. The US has seen tens of thousands of deaths related to opioids like fentanyl annually, though the latest figures, for 2023, showed a decrease from the prior year. 'The US has ignored China's goodwill and unreasonably imposed on China fentanyl tariffs,' Guo said. 'If the US truly wants to cooperate with China, it should face up to objective facts, correct its mistakes and engage in dialogue with China on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit,' he added.
