Wolves Women just fell short of promotion to the Championship this season. After the campaign ended, the team learned that even if it had reached its goal, it wouldn't have moved up a division.
That's because the club didn't actually apply for promotion — a required step for any team in England.
Wolves won their final match of the third-tier Women's Premier Division North on Sunday, defeating Liverpool Feds 6-0. Promotion was still possible heading into the final game of the season, but Nottingham Forest also won Sunday to clinch the title and finish three points above Wolves.
It wasn't until after the game that Wolves staff members told players that the team's application for a Tier 2 license — which requires clubs to make several financial commitments — was never turned in before a February deadline.
In a post on X, midfielder Beth Merrick said: "Imagine fighting for promotion all season to find out our Championship bid was never submitted.
"As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the club's ambitions for the women's team.
"For our staff to have to deliver this news to us moments after is astonishing."
The Express & Star reported that the club didn't apply amid fears that its men's team would be relegated from the Premier League. Wolves are currently 13th in the Premier League, comfortably clear of the bottom three.
Wolves midfielder Lily Simkin added on X: "We took it to the last day to find out it would have all been for nothing anyway. We deserve better."

Bills Offense Goes Back To Square 1 In Development

Bills Offense Goes Back To Square 1 In Development originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills have one of the best offensive units in the entire NFL The reigning MVP in Josh Allen is back, and he's got a collection of solid receivers, and a 1,000-yard runner (assuming James Cook eventually shows up), and a top-five offensive line are all part of the Bills' dominant offense. Advertisement As the team prepares for another year together - and a Super Bowl push that begins with this week's minicamp - the Bills have a difficult task. ... a hump to overcome. In short? It's easy for a talented offense to get stale after so many years together. It's why their play-caller, Joe Brady, will be under immense pressure this season. Brady has a plan to keep the offense from falling into that trap, though. And it starts with pushing the entire group back to Square One through offseason workouts. "I think a problem every coach faces every year is if you think you can just pick up where you left off, you lose sight of the details, you lose sight of the how, you lose sight of what got you to that point," Brady said. "There are elements of what we did last year that we obviously need to continue to sustain, but there are so many elements we've got to get better at." Advertisement Buffalo has always been one of the more efficiently explosive offensive units in the league over the last few years. They have gone toe-to-toe with the best ... and won more than their share. The Bills believe themselves to be Super Bowl contenders. Time will tell if that is the case in 2025. And going back to Square One is part of that plan. Tottenham asked to reinstate Ange Postecoglou as head coach by Melbourne mayor

The mayor of one of Australia's biggest cities has asked Tottenham Hotspur to 'reconsider' their decision to sack head coach Ange Postecoglou, adding they risk being 'known as the team that is allergic to silverware'. The 59-year-old Postecoglou, who was born in Greece but grew up in Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria, was relieved of his duties by Tottenham on Friday after two seasons at the helm. Advertisement He led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years when they won the Europa League on May 21 but oversaw a league campaign that ended with a 17th-place finish and 22 losses, both record lows for the club in the Premier League era. Postecoglou spent the majority of his playing career with South Melbourne FC — a club founded by Greek immigrants and originally known as South Melbourne Hellas — and was head coach of the team between 1996 and 2000. After leading Australia at the 2014 World Cup and winning the 2015 Asian Cup as head coach of the national team, Postecoglou remains popular in his home city and nation, with Lord Mayor of Melbourne Nicholas Reece even taking the step to publicly urge Tottenham to reverse their decision. 'On behalf of the people of Melbourne, and Premier League fans around the world, I call on Tottenham Hotspur to reconsider its decision to sack coach Ange Postecoglou,' said Mr Reece in a post on Instagram. 'In Melbourne we have followed Ange's career closely for decades. 'Never underestimate Ange's determination to win, and his ability to carry teams to greatness. We have seen this time again over his career. This year Tottenham made history by winning the Europa League trophy — its first such win in 17 years. We will see further trophies if Ange is given the chance. 'Don't let Tottenham be known as the team that is allergic to silverware. Let Ange lead the players onto greatness in next year's Premier League campaign.' Mr Reece is a member of Australia's Labor Party and assumed his role in July 2024, before retaining it in the 2024 Melbourne City Council election. Tottenham are yet to confirm Postecoglou's replacement. The Athletic reported on Monday that the club had contacted Brentford as they seek to reach an agreement to appoint Thomas Frank as head coach. USA TODAY Sports' says this former Alabama player, NFL wide receiver must step up in 2025

USA TODAY Sports' says this former Alabama player, NFL wide receiver must step up in 2025 It is likely no secret that the 2024 NFL season was a struggle at times for former Alabama Crimson Tide wideout Jermaine Burton. Selected with the No. 80 overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, Burton did not necessarily have the type of season many expected the former Alabama wide receiver to have. That is because across 14 games, Burton only had a combined four receptions for 107 yards. This was a far cry from what Burton showcased during his two seasons at Alabama as well, a span in which he had 79 receptions combined for 1,475 yards and 15 touchdowns. Burton also led the SEC with an average of 20.5 yards per reception in 2023, and averaged 26.8 yards a catch as a rookie. Looking ahead to year two as well, according to USA TODAY Sports' Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, Burton is one-of-nine second-year NFL players who must step up for their respective teams' in 2025 coming off rough rookie seasons, saying of the former Alabama wideout: "Third-rounders typically don't need to worry about their standing after just one year, even in the most trying circumstances. But while the Bengals didn't cut ties with Burton despite the receiver's disappointing rookie year culminating with him being left at home for the regular-season finale, it's clear massive changes are needed for a course correction." 'Nobody should be happy with it,' Burton said last week when asked about the benching. 'I was very disappointed, but it's something that I moved on from, and grew from, and can't wait, looking forward, really looking forward to this year.' "With Andrei Iosivas having solidified his standing as the No. 3 receiver behind Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins while Mike Gesicki returns at tight end, any substantial offensive contributions are likely out of reach for Burton in the near future. What matters now is not just getting in coaches' good graces but staying there. While a spot as a backup should be secure given the Bengals' inaction in bringing in any outside competition this offseason, Burton is one of the few players who might stand to benefit from establishing a pattern of overall reliability rather than the flash plays he's already shown himself capable of." A team with Super Bowl aspirations, it's clear that the 2025 season is a big one for the Bengals, as well as Burton, who will look to bounce-back from a rough rookie campaign.
