A Sea Of Jalur Gemilang: Johor Man's Show Of Patriotism
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 8 (Bernama) – As the nation celebrates the spirit of independence, one elderly man in Johor has taken his patriotism to extraordinary heights.
M. Kandapan, 65, has adorned his home and vehicle with over 3,000 pieces of the Jalur Gemilang, each one carefully placed as a testament to his unwavering love for the country.
This initiative is not new for Kandapan. For the past 25 years, he has made it a personal mission to decorate his home every National Month as a way to express gratitude for living in a peaceful, harmonious, and independent nation.
"This year, I replaced all the flags—about 3,000 of them, which I purchased online, and started decorating my home and car in July. My family helped me with the task," he said when met at his home in Bandar Seri Alam, Masai.
For this father of three, it's more than just decoration, it's a lifelong commitment. "I will continue to fly the Jalur Gemilang until the end of my life. This is my way of showing love for my country," he shared.
Despite the effort and cost involved, Kandapan takes immense joy in seeing the flags proudly fluttering outside his home and attached to his vehicle.
"Every time I see the Jalur Gemilang waving, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. It's an indescribable feeling," he added.
Kandapan believes everyone expresses their love for the country in their own way. "This is mine. It may seem small to some, but it means a lot to me. While decorating my home and car with flags may cost me, it's nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence,' he shared.

New hope for Perak's strays

According to state housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, a partnership between the state government and NGOs will identify and convert suitable sites into affordable, NGO-managed shelters. She said the move aims to ensure that every rescued animal has a place to stay until it can be adopted. 'These shelters will be more than just holding spaces, they will be places where hope begins,' she told reporters after the launch of the Perak Pawsitive 2025 campaign for Kinta district. The campaign's launch at the Red Crescent Hall yesterday received a royal touch with the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim officiating the event. Also present was Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, wife of the Perak Mentri Besar. Ng said stray complaints are on the rise with 1,421 dog-related cases reported to 15 local councils as of April this year. 'It is a serious issue but it is one we can solve if we tackle it from the root, by preventing unwanted births through neutering and making adoption a norm,' she said. Since its inception last year, the Perak Pawsitive initiative has subsidised the neutering of 301 dogs and 254 cats, alongside public awareness drives, art competitions and adoption campaigns. Ng also said licensing has also seen a boost with 498 dog licences issued during the previous campaign, uncovering a surprising number of unregistered pets. She said the problem stems largely from irresponsible pet ownership. 'Too many owners fail to neuter their pets and the unwanted litters are often abandoned. 'This is not only cruel but also affects public safety and community harmony.' Ng said while the state's subsidised neutering programme is mainly targeted at pet owners, NGOs and individuals rescuing strays would be considered on a case-by-case basis. 'Many NGOs are already running trap-neuter-return programmes, so this campaign focuses on pets whose owners can care for them responsibly. 'We want Perak to be a state where every animal is wanted, cared for and safe.'

A total of 24 households comprising residents from the Chinese, Indian and Malay communities from Taman Sum Hup have chosen to fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride in front of their homes. 'I wanted to encourage each home to be a part of this patriotic display and fly our Jalur Gemilang,' said local councillor Lai Cheng Yew, who took the lead and purchased flags and flagpoles with his allowance. 'I'm so happy to see the residents participating willingly as the Merdeka celebration approaches, unaffected by the recent incidents,' he said, as reported by Sin Chew Daily. He said the effort is not just about countering negative sentiments but to also channel the community's energy into patriotism and away from controversies. 'I hope to instil a sense of pride and unity within the community. 'If anyone has mistakenly put up the flag, let's remind them and rectify it without making an issue of it,' he added.
