A Sea Of Jalur Gemilang: Johor Man's Show Of Patriotism

By Nur Fadhliana Shaari JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 8 (Bernama) – As the nation celebrates the spirit of independence, one elderly man in Johor has taken his patriotism to extraordinary heights. M. Kandapan, 65, has adorned his home and vehicle with over 3,000 pieces of the Jalur Gemilang, each one carefully placed as a testament to his unwavering love for the country. This initiative is not new for Kandapan. For the past 25 years, he has made it a personal mission to decorate his home every National Month as a way to express gratitude for living in a peaceful, harmonious, and independent nation. "This year, I replaced all the flags—about 3,000 of them, which I purchased online, and started decorating my home and car in July. My family helped me with the task," he said when met at his home in Bandar Seri Alam, Masai. For this father of three, it's more than just decoration, it's a lifelong commitment. "I will continue to fly the Jalur Gemilang until the end of my life. This is my way of showing love for my country," he shared. Despite the effort and cost involved, Kandapan takes immense joy in seeing the flags proudly fluttering outside his home and attached to his vehicle. "Every time I see the Jalur Gemilang waving, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. It's an indescribable feeling," he added. Kandapan believes everyone expresses their love for the country in their own way. "This is mine. It may seem small to some, but it means a lot to me. While decorating my home and car with flags may cost me, it's nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence,' he shared.

At 74, Pak Habib Still Gets Hearts Pumping With Free Aerobics Classes

By Nur Fadhliana Shaari JOHOR BAHRU, July 6 (Bernama) -- While many his age prefer a quiet morning at home, 74-year-old Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Jaafar, fondly known as Pak Habib, can be found leading energetic aerobics sessions, music booming and smiles all around, at Taman Merdeka here. A familiar figure to regulars at the park, Pak Habib teaches free aerobics classes from Thursday to Sunday, starting as early as 8am, drawing a loyal following from people of all ages and backgrounds. Armed with a playlist of over 2,000 songs from various genres, he blends fitness with fun—mixing in everything from silat and Tai Chi to yoga, dangdut and zapin, to keep things lively. 'People won't get bored if we mix it up. At the same time, I also give motivational talks and fitness tips during class,' said the former Telekom Malaysia technician, who also holds a Diploma in Sports Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). His workouts are light and accessible, focusing on balance, blood circulation, muscle flexibility and breathing, making them suitable for all ages. Pak Habib's journey into aerobics began in the 1990s when a friend was searching for a male instructor. 'Back then, aerobics was usually taught by women, so I initially declined. But with a bit of encouragement and some sports knowledge, I gave it a shot — and here I am, still needed by the community even as age catches up,' he shared. Despite many urging him to slow down, Pak Habib remains steadfast in his belief that age should never be an excuse to stop moving.

PrintTEX: UTM Trio Develops 24-hour Self-service Printing Solution

GENERAL By Nur Fadhliana Shaari JOHOR BAHRU, June 21 (Bernama) -- What began as a trivial issue - printing assignments outside regular hours - became the driving force behind an innovative venture by three Universiti Teknologi Malaysia students, who developed PrintTEX, a self-service kiosk offering round-the-clock printing access. Through their startup, Uninet Teknologi Enterprise, the trio from the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering – Fikri Akmal Aizuddin Bahrim, 23, as Chief Executive Officer; Iqmal Aizat Mohd Zamri, 23, as Chief Technology Officer; and Low Lie Xin, 25, as Chief Operating Officer – began operating the kiosk in December 2023. Fikri Akmal Aizuddin, a final-year computer science student, said the kiosk is complemented by the PrintTEX mobile app, which offers on-demand printing services with rates as low as RM0.20 for black and white and RM0.45 for colour prints. 'The PrintTEX app comes with several handy features, such as users being able to find the nearest kiosk, upload documents and make payments online. 'Users just need to install the app, upload their documents, make a minimum payment of RM3, and then head to the kiosk to scan the QR code and print straight away,' he said when met by Bernama here. Fikri Akmal Aizuddin said they first developed a basic prototype or minimum viable product (MVP) in August 2023 using their own funds, which covered development costs, hardware such as printers, storage systems and other electronic components. He shared that with full support from the UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship, his team successfully secured RM30,000 from the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) to assist with system development, documentation, and company registration. 'We developed the entire system ourselves, from the mobile app and integration platform to printer configuration and payment management. It took us around six months for the research and development and another month or two to build the first unit,' he said.
