Sreenivasan murder case: HC grants bail to four PFI members
The Kerala High Court has granted bail to four members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) who had been arraigned as accused in the murder of RSS leader Sreenivasan of Palakkad in 2022. A Division Bench of Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K.V. Jayakumar granted them bail while hearing their plea challenging the dismissal of their bail applications by the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam. Muhammed Bilal, Riyasudheen, K.P. Ansar, and K.V. Saheer, who were granted bail, had been arraigned as among the accused in the case. They had been charged with participating in a conspiracy, conducting reconnaissance along with the other accused, and playing a prominent role in facilitating the murder. They contended that, though the incident was a 'political murder', the NIA deliberately gave it a communal colour by deleting the name of the political party from the final report, replacing it with 'a Hindu leader,' and incorporating provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA deposed before the court that the investigation had revealed that the PFI had a hidden agenda to overthrow democracy in India and to establish Islamic rule by 2047. The court said that the final report filed by the NIA was voluminous, consisting of 1,688 documents, 1,114 witnesses, 696 material objects, and 10 terabytes of forensic reports. Given the magnitude of the prosecution case and the stay on proceedings issued by the Supreme Court, specifically interdicting the framing of charges, there is no foreseeable possibility of the trial commencing or concluding in the near future. Out of the total 66 accused in the case, 49 had already been enlarged on bail either by the High Court or the Supreme Court, and only 12 remained in custody. The court granted bail to the four accused since the accused persons facing almost similar charges had already been released.

Hyd-based law grad arrested for threat to UP SDM
Bijnor: A 30-year-old "hacker" from Telangana with degrees in law and fashion designing was arrested in the state's Ranga Reddy district for allegedly sending a threatening message with an extortion demand of Rs 15 lakh to a sub divisional magistrate (SDM) in UP last month, police said on Tuesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dheeraj Reddy, who is from the district's Madhapur area, was picked in a joint operation by police teams from UP and Telangana on Monday. In a chilling message to Ritu Rani, the then Dhampur SDM, Dheeraj had allegedly warned her of "meeting the same fate as the murdered DSP Tanzeel Ahmed", a Bijnor native. Though DSP Ahmed -- an NIA sleuth probing terror incidents -- was killed way back in 2016, Dheeraj chose to mention his name for the Bijnor connection, police said. Dhampur's circle officer (CO) Abhay Kumar Pandey said, "Dheeraj Reddy, a hacker, had sent threatening messages to SDM Rani on her official mobile number. He demanded money and threatened to kill her if she did not comply. On July 24, she filed a complaint at Dhampur thana, and a joint team of cyber and local officers were dispatched to Hyderabad to trace the culprit." In her police complaint, Rani, who started serving as SDM of Bijnor from Tuesday, stated: "On the afternoon of July 24, I received a threat message on my closed user group (CUG) mobile number. The sender demanded Rs 15 lakh and warned of dire consequences... Barcodes and mobile numbers were shared for transferring the amount. The sender also cited DSP Tanzeel Ahmed murder case. " A case was subsequently registered against an unnamed person under BNS sections 308 (2) (extortion) and 351 (4) (criminal intimidation). A police team from Dhampur started a search and surveillance operation, leading to Dheeraj's arrest in Telangana. After apprehending him, cops found that he was also running an acupressure therapy centre in Hyderabad. During interrogation, he admitted to being addicted to drugs and revealed he wanted to open a showroom, but lacked sufficient funds. To arrange the money, he claimed to have resorted to cybercrime -- sending WhatsApp messages to phone numbers randomly. He also told cops that he was unaware that the number belonged to the SDM.

J&K Police attaches property of ‘active' terrorist in Anantnag
Srinagar: Police in J&K's Anantnag district said on Tuesday that it has attached the immovable property of an active terrorist. A police statement said that Anantnag Police, in its continued crackdown on the terror ecosystem, has attached immovable property belonging to an active terrorist under relevant provisions of law. The land falling under Khasra No. 165min situated at Guree, Bijbehara, and owned by Adil Hussain Thoker, son of Wali Mohammed Thoke, resident of Guree, Bijbehara, an active terrorist, has been attached under Section 83 of CrPC. The action has been taken in connection with FIR No. 11/2023 registered under Sections 20, 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Sections 2/3 of the EIMCO Act. This attachment is part of lawful measures aimed at dismantling the support structure of terrorism in the district. Such actions will continue against individuals found aiding or involved in unlawful and anti-national activities. Joint forces, including the army, CAPFs and the J&K Police, have been carrying out coordinated target-specific operations against terrorists, their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and sympathisers. These operations are aimed at dismantling the entire ecosystem of terror in J&K rather than focusing only on the elimination of gun-wielding terrorists. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law in the district. Drug smugglers and drug peddlers are also on the radar of the joint forces, as it is believed that the funds generated by hawala rackets and drug smuggling are used to fund terrorism. While the army guards the over 740 km long line of control (LoC) in J&K, the CAPFs and the local police carry out operations against terrorism in the hinterland. J&K L-G has been personally reviewing the security operations, and in periodic reviews, he has been laying stress on the terror ecosystem and not just terrorist specific operations.
