Why Kalen DeBoer chose Ty Simpson as Alabama football starting quarterback
Alabama football's second fall scrimmage was its first with a starting quarterback. Ty Simpson, after being named as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback days after Alabama's first scrimmage, ran the first-team offense Saturday, Aug. 16. And with a starter named, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said the Crimson Tide now has the time to start officially preparing for Florida State and the rest of the 2025 season. "I think building a team and getting the momentum going," DeBoer said When we knew, we needed to do it. That's allowed us three weeks or prep building up our team for Florida State." After the first scrimmage, DeBoer said he and the Alabama coaching staff "knew we were at that point where we felt good about who should be the starter." Simpson was named Alabama's starting quarterback Monday, Aug. 11 after battling for starting reps with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. In the second fall scrimmage, DeBoer said Mack and Russell "did a great job, same as (the) last scrimmage." Simpson, DeBoer said, had a higher completion percentage, but not as many explosive plays, giving credit to the defense. "Today, I thought he came out and executed the offense," DeBoer said. "And he just continues to be steady. Finds his times to make his plays. Today, he actually used his feet again and that's, I think, something people will probably underestimate as we go through the year of his ability to just make plays and keep plays alive. I thought he was steady. I thought he was consistent." Simpson has the most snaps of any quarterback on the Alabama roster, having backed up Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe for this past three seasons. Simpson has 381 career passing yards, 130 career rushing yards and three career touchdowns. Alabama football opens the 2025 season at Florida State Aug. 30. NHL 2025-26 Key Dates Include Olympic Break, Florida Outdoor Games
Let's take a look at the NHL 2025-26 key dates for the upcoming season, with the opening of training camps now just one month away. The NHL has an interesting calendar this year. Before the changes from the new collective bargaining agreement kick in for 2026-27, this will be the last year of an 82-game regular season, before that number increases to 84. We've got a pair of outdoor games scheduled for the Sunshine State and the league's newest franchise will debut its new branding, but international hockey looks set to dominate the discourse. Here's what to keep an eye on. International Events The marquee hockey event of the year will be the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The men's hockey tournament will run from Feb. 11-22 at two arenas in Milan, with 12 nations competing. To accommodate the return of NHL players to the competition for the first time since 2014, the league will be dark from Feb. 6-25. The league is staging one NHL Global Series event in 2025-26. With Swedish stars Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell and Filip Forsberg taking center stage, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators will square off for a pair of games at Avicii Arena in Stockholm on Nov. 14 and Nov. 16, 2025. Also worth mentioning on the international calendar: the 2026 World Junior Championship will return to the United States for the first time since 2018. With the United States looking to three-peat for the first time in program history, the world's 10 best U20 teams will compete in Saint Paul and Minneapolis from Dec. 26, 2025 to Jan. 5, 2026. Pre-Season Play The jump to 84 regular-season games in the 2026-27 season coincides with a reduced pre-season calendar. Under the new rules, teams will play no more than four exhibition games, and players with at least 100 games of NHL experience won't play in more than two of them. This fall, will be the last time the calendar looks similar to what we've seen in recent years. Teams typically play between five and eight exhibition games, which include smattering of neutral-site contests. There won't be any pre-season games in Europe this year. Here's the full list of nine neutral-site games. Like last season, we'll see two games in Quebec City at the NHL-ready Videotron Centre — this time with the Ottawa Senators featured in both games. We'll also see the return of some regular annual showcases including the 'Empire Classic' between Southern California's Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks and a rematch between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning in Orlando. Utah Mammoth Brand Debut One year after the Utah Hockey Club debuted after purchasing the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes, the new team is set to hit the ice with its new Utah Mammoth branding. The team will wear its new jerseys for the first time in a pair of split-squad games against the Colorado Avalanche on Sept. 21. They'll be the road team at Denver's Ball Arena and designated as the home team for the neutral-site game at the University of Denver. The Mammoth's true home debut will come in a pre-season game against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Delta Center, and their regular-season debut will be against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, Oct. 15. 2025 Opening Night The 2025-26 NHL regular season will kick off with a tripleheader on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The Florida Panthers will kick off the festivities with their second banner raising at Amerant Bank Arena before they take on the Chicago Blackhawks (5 p.m. ET). Then, the Penguins will face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden (8 p.m. ET) before the night wraps up with the Colorado Avalanche taking on the Los Angeles Kings at Arena (10:30 p.m. ET). 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame Weekend The annual celebration of the latest inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame will take place from Nov. 8-10 in Toronto. Special events will include the Hockey Hall of Fame game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday, Nov. 9 and the induction ceremony in the Great Hall on Monday, Nov. 10. With Seattle Kraken president Ron Francis now serving as the chair of the Hall of Fame's selection committee, this year's class features eight inductees. The six players are Zdeno Chara, Duncan Keith, Alexander Mogilny and Joe Thornton along with Jennifer Botterill and Brianna Decker. In the builder category, general manager Daniele Sauvageau of the PWHL's Montreal Victoire will become the first woman inducted as a builder. She goes in alongside longtime Boston University coach Jack Parker. Outdoor Games In 2025-26, the NHL will mount its first-ever outdoor games ever in the Sunshine State. With the Florida Panthers now back-to-back Stanley Cup champions and the Tampa Bay Lightning having won two Cups themselves in 2020 and 2021, the tentpole events were long overdue — but challenging to mount given the weather conditions in the region. The Panthers will face the New York Rangers at 2026 NHL Winter Classic at LoanDepot Park in Miami on Friday, Jan. 2 as the league continues to look at moving off the traditional Jan. 1 date that it traditionally favored. Last year's even at Wrigley Field in Chicago was held on Dec. 31. The home of baseball's Miami Marlins, LoanDepot Park features a retractable roof and air conditioning — features should be enormously helpful during the ice-making process for the game's temporary rink. Then, on Sunday, Feb. 1, the Lightning will face the Boston Bruins at Raymond James Stadium, the home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game will fall one day after Tampa's famed Gasparilla Pirate Fest, and a week before Super Bowl LX in California. Because of the Olympics, it has been decided that there will be no All-Star event in 2026. There is also no Heritage Classic outdoor game scheduled in Canada among the NHL 2025-26 key dates.

Kentucky Downs offers Richest Seven Days Of Racing In North America
If you were wondering where the greenest grass in North America resides, look no farther than the Tennessee-Kentucky state line. There is a little country horse track nestled just 30 minutes north of Nashville that has incorporated ingenuity and insightfulness while forming a fertilizer that now yields more green than anywhere on the continent. That place is known as Kentucky Downs and beginning August 28, folks from all over the world will hope to light up the lawn in Franklin, Kentucky. As the only European style race course in these United States, Kentucky Downs has always had a uniqueness about it. Positioned on a tract of land located betwixt highway 31 and Interstate 65, this undulating course with three turns has become the late summer destination spot for turf runners. Why would horsemen from all over the globe choose to ship and run on this particular grass? It simply boils down to the greenery in more ways than one. 'Kentucky Downs puts up a lot of money for the horsemen', says California-based hall of fame trainer Richard Mandella who shipped in Goliad last year and won two races and $1.4 million. 'It also offers a different environment to race in that sometimes makes a difference for horses looking to succeed.' The 2025 race meet at Kentucky Downs has seven race dates and will offer up 18 Stakes races with purse money exceeding $30 million. Of those Stakes races, 11 are worth at least $2 million and the overall paydays for horsemen are the highest in North America. Showing folks the money has attracted the best in the turf racing business in recent years. However, this place once known as the Dueling Grounds has not always made it rain Benjamins. Struggling to make things work from the mid 1990's until about 2010, the track positioned on the grounds where men had fought to defend their honor in the early 1800's found a way to change the game of Thoroughbred racing. With clearance from the state of Kentucky, gaming machines were installed and used to supplement the race purses. With only four racing dates in 2011, Kentucky Downs was able to offer a total of $769,810 for their thirty the trend-setting move to supplement racing purses with gaming machine money, the live racing meet has grown by leaps and bounds. The very next year, the total purse money tripled to over $2 million and since has moved like Secretariat up the charts. In 2024, a total of 76 races were run over a 7-day meet and offered up just over $34.6 million in payouts to the Thoroughbred teams. Establishing this blueprint for success, others have followed suit and incorporated gaming money into their Thoroughbred racing program. Beginning in 2016, in an unprecedented move, Kentucky Downs began helping supplement other tracks in the state to keep more horses running year-round in the Bluegrass State. The purse increases help generate larger fields and more betting handle for those that have been wise enough to follow the trail emblazoned by the visionaries based in Franklin, Kentucky. The game has greatly benefitted from these innovations with Kentucky Downs enjoying the largest amount of growth and notoriety. The green at Kentucky Downs has not just been limited to the horsemen. The speculating public has also enjoyed a heyday over the past decade or so as well. In 2024 over $90 million was wagered during the seven-day meet. The predictable unpredictability has been magnified on this turf because of the field sizes (76 races averaged 10.89 entrants) and nature of the course. In 2024 the average payoff for a $2 win wager was $14.86. The average 50 cent pick 4 yielded $2,237.19, the 50 cent pick 5 a whopping $22,825.78, and the 10 cent superfecta generated $292.85 as an average return. 'I love Kentucky Downs because the payouts are fantastic', says Rick Broth, an 11-time National Handicapping Challenge participant and Kentucky Derby betting challenge champion. 'We love to play there because the field sizes are always full and it's a great place to make money if you are guessing right.' The 2025 live racing meet kicks off on August 28 with races also run on August 30, 31, September 4, 6, 7, and 10. Major facility improvements by the current ownership group and the Louis Vutton-like purses and payouts make this the place to be. The biggest day of racing is Kentucky Turf Cup Day on September 6 which features six Stakes events headlined by the Breeders' Cup win and you're in Turf Cup. Will there be plenty of green during those seven days in the Bluegrass State? As they say at Kentucky Downs…'You bet'.
