BBC News2 days ago
A fundraiser has been launched to replace equipment lost in a fire at a building used by Scouts in Devon.Police said the blaze on Monday, which destroyed the hut at the Imperial Recreation Ground, burned a "huge amount" of camping supplies.Rob Masters, from the 5th Exmouth Sea Scouts, who had used the hut since 1967, said a lot of equipment was lost, including dinghies and kayaks.A boy and a girl from Exmouth and a boy from Exeter were arrested on suspicion of arson, but have since been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
Mr Masters said: "So, we were storing all our boating equipment, buoyancy aids, canoe paddles; we lost three sailing dinghies as well. "The kayaks we had stored in two shipping containers - the containers turned into big ovens and several of the boats melted."
The 5th Exmouth Sea Scouts support 25 young boys and girls with its activities. The troop said it had already been raising money for the past three years for a new hut, but now it had been left with no usable home for its equipment.Mr Masters said: "The old building that was lost in the fire would've been demolished in due course anyway - [but] we're not ready for that stage so we will need to find a temporary home until our new building is completed."The fundraiser, set at £30,000, had made more than £3,300 by 10:00 BST on Wednesday.

Liverpool fire-starter who damaged Beatles attraction jailed

An arsonist who started a fire that damaged a Beatles attraction in the Liverpool street where the band made their name has been Byrne, 38, was caught on CCTV on 14 July setting alight rubbish piled up outside the Beatles Museum in Mathew Street, close to where the famous original Cavern Club venue was. When he was arrested, Byrne, of no fixed address, claimed he had done it because he was being bullied by the government. He was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court to three and a half years behind bars for arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered. Byrne was first seen at about 04:00 GMT carrying a sleeping bag before launching his attack. He approached a bin full of rubbish at the side of the museum and then made several attempts to set fire to it with his the flames took hold, he stood back to watch and then walked away. He looked back again a few times as he made his way up Matthew Street, CCTV of the incident showed. Danger He told police he had been drinking vodka before the incident, which damaged the doors of the museum. Speaking after the sentencing hearing on Monday, senior crown prosecutor Mikayla Kitchen, of CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: "Daniel Byrne deliberately caused a fire by the Liverpool Beatles Museum. "He remained at the scene to ensure it had caught fire, checking the extent of the damage as he walked away. "He had no regard for the lives of people he placed in danger. This sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions on that night." Listen to the best of BBC Radio Merseyside on Sounds and follow BBC Merseyside on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Police seize £180,000 Aston Martin deposit from Andrew Tate

Police have seized £180,000 from Andrew Tate after a court heard he paid the money for a special edition Aston Martin through tax evasion and money laundering. Devon and Cornwall Police obtained account freezing and forfeiture orders at Westminster Magistrates' Court for the Valhalla supercar deposit. The funds added to almost £2.7m of criminal assets seized from Mr Tate and his brother Tristan since December 2024. In a statement, the force said the money will be distributed in line with the Proceeds of Crime Act and will benefit communities, victims of crime and vulnerable people, while the Treasury will receive 50 per cent to be spent on public services. The police action was submitted to the court on the same basis as previous applications made by the force last year. At that time, Judge Goldspring said in his judgment that he was satisfied of the "overall criminality of deliberate and dishonest cheat of the revenue". He added that the Tate brothers had "engaged in long-standing conduct to evade their tax". Mr Tate, a former professional kickboxer, faces a civil trial at the High Court next summer over claims of rape and sexual violence brought by four women.
