Treasure Hunt In Polish Woods Uncovers 1,500-Year-Old Pure Gold Necklace Worth...

Last Updated: During a summer treasure hunt in Grodzic Forest, Denar Kalisz discovered a Roman warrior's grave, 631 coins, and a fifth-century Gothic gold necklace What began as a lighthearted summer treasure hunt in the Grodzic Forest ended in one of Poland's most remarkable archaeological finds. A group of history enthusiasts calling themselves Denar Kalisz had ventured into the woods near the city of Kalisz in June, more for fun than expectation. Within just five weeks, their 'joke" search turned into a genuine unearthing of centuries-old artifacts. Their discoveries started modestly. The first major find was an ancient grave dating back to the Roman period. Inside lay the remains of a warrior, along with parts of his spear and shield, a silent testimony to the battle practices of that era. Days later, the team uncovered an 11th-century coin and a small clay pot. When the pot was opened at the University of Kalisz, it revealed 631 coins hidden inside. The discovery stunned researchers, proving that even a single coin could be the key to a much larger treasure. By the end of June, a second clay vessel containing more coins emerged from the soil. Watch the viral video: The true breakthrough, however, came on July 12. Group member Mateusz spotted a glint of gold. At first, he thought it might be a bracelet. Experts later confirmed it was, in fact, a pure gold necklace from the fifth century, weighing 222 grams. The necklace had been folded and stored in a pot, its hook-and-loop design remarkably intact. According to specialists, the piece once belonged to the Gothic people, a Germanic community that coexisted with the Slavs in parts of Poland. While similar Gothic necklaces have been found in Scandinavia, this is the first discovery of its kind in Poland. The gold treasure will now be displayed in the Kalisz museum, joining the coins, weapons, and grave relics that together weave a vivid story of the region's ancient past. From the resting place of a forgotten warrior to a glittering Gothic heirloom, the Grodzic Forest has, in just one summer, revealed a trove of history hidden for over a millennium. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 20:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
