Thousands of Islamists rally in Bangladesh against proposed changes to women's rights
Thousands of supporters of an Islamist group rallied in Bangladesh's capital on Saturday to denounce proposed recommendations for ensuring equal rights, including ones related to property, for mainly Muslim women.
Leaders of the Hefazat-e-Islam group said the proposed legal reforms are contradictory to the Sharia law. More than 20,000 followers of the group rallied near the Dhaka University, some carrying banners and placards reading "Say no to Western laws on our women, rise up Bangladesh.'
The group threatened to organize rallies on May 23 across the country if the government didn't meet their demands.

Mamunul Haque, a leader of the group, demanded that the interim government's reforms commission be abolished and its members punished for the proposed changes. He said they hurt "the sentiments of the majority of the people of this country' by labeling the religious laws of inheritance as the main cause of inequality between men and women.
The group's leaders also demanded that the interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad punus ban the Awami League party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in August. Hasina's opponents accuse her government of killing hundreds of students and others during the uprising that ended her 15-year rule. Hasina has been in exile in India since her ouster.
Islamist groups in Bangladesh have increased their visibility since Hasina's ouster, and minority groups have complained of being intimidated.

Marcos calls for unity, compassion on Eid'l Adha
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to embrace unity, compassion, and spiritual reflection as the country joins Muslim communities in observing Eid'l Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice. 'I join our Muslim communities in commemorating Eid'l Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice,' Marcos said in his official message. Underscoring the deeper meaning of the occasion, Marcos said, 'This sacred day calls us to remember that devotion reveals itself when we are asked to release what we once believed we could never give.' He reflected on the enduring story of the Prophet Ibrahim, describing it as a reminder of the difficult moral crossroads faced by individuals and communities alike. 'The story of Prophet Ibrahim endures because it leads us to the edge, to that thin border between obedience and resistance, where the soul must decide what truly matters,' said Marcos. Marcos emphasized that the message of Eid'l Adha transcends religious ritual, urging Filipinos to engage in introspection and a renewed sense of public service. 'Eid'l Adha invites us to embark on a more difficult journey—not towards a place, but towards a state of heart,' he added. With the celebration coinciding with the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage, Marcos encouraged all citizens to ask what kind of offering truly builds a better nation. 'The measure is not in how much is given, but in what is restored: the dignity where there was dismissal, fairness where there was neglect, and compassion where there was indifference.' 'May the spirit of this sacred remembrance inspire Filipinos of all faiths to respond to what our times ask of us, and to leave behind not only victory but renewal. In doing so, we affirm that sacrifice, at its best, does not vanish but uplifts, and leaves something stronger,' said Marcos.

Gaza humanitarian aid sites close for Eid as Palestinians go hungry
The US-backed so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announced on Friday that it has closed all its aid distribution centres across the besieged enclave as Palestinians go hungry on one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar. The group suspended operations after a series of fatal shootings by Israeli forces near the sites, forcing an immediate halt to aid deliveries. The controversial US-backed initiative to distribute aid in Gaza named an evangelical leader and former adviser to US President Donald Trump as its new chief earlier this week. Johnnie Moore, a former member of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, who has dismissed reports of mass killings at the GHF aid sites as 'fictional massacres', was appointed after the initiative's former head, Jake Wood, resigned. The appointment comes as major partners abandon the project amidst the mass killings of Palestinians seeking aid. Wood cited concerns over the GHF's ability to adhere to the 'humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence'. The GHF's first week of operations descended into chaos, with over 75 Palestinian aid seekers killed by Israeli forces at its distribution points in less than six days.
