College Football Playoff Contender Loses Key Playmaker Via Transfer Portal

It was an amazing season for the SMU Mustangs and head coach Rhett Lashlee, who shocked many by going 11-3 and 8-0 in ACC matchups, leading them to enter the College Football Playoff as the No. 11 seed.
They would of course, end up losing to No. 6 Penn State, but they now hold some high expectations entering 2025, with ESPN BET giving them the fourth-best odds (+600) to win their conference.

Unfortunately, they have been one team that's taken some pretty big hits from the transfer portal and on Monday received more bad news in the form of running back LJ Johnson, who is now in search of a new program.
Johnson had originally started his collegiate career with the Texas A&M Aggies in 2021 and in his first two seasons appeared in 10 games, accumulating just 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
After the 2022 season, he found a home with the Mustangs, where he saw an increased role and in the past two years has made 24 appearances, running the ball 183 times for 879 yards and nine touchdowns.

Coming out of high school, Johnson was a big piece of Texas A&M's 2021 recruiting class, with On3 industry rankings placing him as a four-star prospect, the No. 5 running back and the No. 57 player in the nation.

Now, though, he's just the latest player from SMU to hit the transfer portal, joining big names such as three-star cornerback Jahari Rogers, three-star quarterback Preston Stone and three-star defensive lineman Omari Abor.

Steelers Add Another Memphis Alum, Sign Ballhawking Safety

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to signed safety Quindell Johnson, per his agency, Universal Sports Management. Johnson is a 6-foot, 208-pound safety out of Memphis in his third professional season. He was most recently with the San Francisco 49ers, but was waived on May 13. Advertisement The 25-year-old former undrafted free agent first joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, but was released during final roster cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears and played nine games during his rookie season in Chicago. He played 35 snaps of defense, playing both in the box and as a free safety. He also played 106 snaps of defense. In total, Johnson recorded three tackles and intercepted Blaine Gabbert in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Last summer, Johnson was again waived coming out of training camp. He spent the entire 2024 season on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad, but did not appear in a game. He was released by the Rams on Jan. 7 and signed with the 49ers on Jan. 21 before being cut after the draft. Quindell Johnson, Memphis Athletics A New Orleans native, Johnson joined Memphis in 2018 and spent five seasons with the Tigers. He redshirted as a true freshman and started four games in 2019 before becoming a three-year starter. Advertisement In 2021, Johnson had 105 tackles, and he followed that up with an AAC-leading four interceptions in 2022. He was a three-time All-AAC selection. In pre-draft testing, Johnson ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, and posted a 4.24-second shuttle run, but had a below-average 32.5-inch vertical for an overall Relative Athletic Score of 7.24. His signing continues the Steelers strong trend of signing players with Memphis area connections lately. He joins Calvin Austin III, Kenneth Gainwell and Roc Taylor as Memphis alumni. Cornerback Brandin Echols is also a Memphis native. The Steelers do not currently have an open roster spot, though they will be able to place tight end Donald Parham on injured reserve after his season-ending injury on Tuesday. Carl Nassib, NFL's 1st openly gay active player and West Chester native, has jersey added to Smithsonian

The jersey of West Chester native Carl Nassib is now on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, honoring his achievement as the first openly gay player to appear in an NFL regular-season game. The Malvern Prep alum made the announcement while appearing on The Pivot Podcast, hosted by former NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder on May 6. The jersey on display is Nassib's No. 94 Las Vegas Raiders jersey from the team's 2021 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens — the first game he played after publicly coming out as gay in a social media post in June 2021. In that game, he made a critical strip sack on Lamar Jackson in overtime that helped lead the Raiders to a 33-27 victory. The jersey has been on display since May 21. "They reached out to me last year and said they wanted to add it to the collection. I said, absolutely. This is huge," Nassib said on the podcast. "I love museums. I love history. I love football. I love the gays." During the podcast, Nassib credited his late uncle, who was also gay and passed away from cancer, for inspiring him to share his truth. "When I came out to him, he said, 'This is the biggest weight off my chest. I'm not the only one,'" Nassib recalled. "That really charged me. I felt like I had to do this." Nassib walked on to Penn State's football team in 2011 but it wasn't until his last two years at Happy Valley that he started rewriting the Nittany Lions record books. In 2015, he set the Penn State single-season sack record with 15.5 sacks, was named a unanimous All-American, and received both the Lombardi Award and Nagurski-Woodson Award as the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year. Nassib played seven seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders before retiring in 2023. During the podcast, Nassib also shared that he grew up an Eagles fan and is a big Taylor Swift fan.

FanDuel posts betting odds to reach CFP; MSU not as much of long shot as you may think

FanDuel posts betting odds to reach CFP; MSU not as much of long shot as you may think Michigan State's odds to reach the College Football Playoff this year aren't as long as you may think. FanDuel has recently released betting odds for teams to make the College Football Playoff this upcoming season. The Spartans are in the bottom half of the Big Ten in odds compared to the rest of the league, but the actual odds are higher than I personally expected. Michigan State opened at +1800 to reach the College Football Playoff next season. I couldn't dig up last year's preseason odds for Indiana to reach the College Football Playoff but I can promise you they were longer odds than the current ones posted for Michigan State this year. Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State ranked as No. 11 for best odds to reach the College Football Playoff. Washington was right ahead of the Spartans, but by a considerable margin at +980. Right behind Michigan State was Rutgers and UCLA at +2500 and Wisconsin at +3000. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Michigan State could be this year's Indiana and these odds only raise my thinking behind that being a possibility. I'm still not signing up for that as a likely endgame for the Spartans this fall, but these odds are at least worth considering as a long shot bet if you're into that kind of thing.
