Longhorns to host Julian Caldwell for official visit

When the calendar flips to June, the Texas Longhorns will be busy welcoming recruits to campus for visits. That list now includes Julian Caldwell. The four-star wide receiver will be on campus June first. It will be the first trip of what is expected to be a busy month for Caldwell. After his stop in Austin, Caldwell will visit with the SMU Mustangs on June 2. He is then scheduled to meet with LSU on June 12 and Oregon on June 18th. The heavy interest in Caldwell is no surprise. He is ranked as the No. 9 wideout in the 2027 class and is the No. 11 ranked prospect in Texas, according to On3. Advertisement During his sophomore campaign, Caldwell hauled in 21 receptions for 581 yards and found the end zone seven times. With him as a vocal part of the offense, Argyle High School made it to the 2024 UIL Texas Football State Championship semifinals in conference 5A D2. If the Longhorns can land Caldwell, he would join a program that has been a wide receiver factory. Over the last two years, the Longhorns have developed Xavier Worth and Matthew Golden into NFL Draft picks. They are also set to welcome back Ryan Wingo, who has shown flashes of promise in his college career. Caldwell has the potential to be the next success story. The Longhorns' only commitment in the 2027 class is four-star linebacker Taven Epps. Adding Caldwell would give Dia Bell or Arch Manning a weapon to rely on. Caldwell's decision is still months away, and the Longhorns 2027 class will look very different. Advertisement With recruiting season far from over, Caldwell still has many options to consider. However, it is a good sign for the Longhorns that he is visiting campus. It will be a chance for Steve Sarkisian to show Caldwell what his future holds if he decides to join the Longhorns. SMU gets four-star receiver over SEC powerhouse programs

The SMU Mustangs picked up a huge recruiting win on Sunday. Four-star receiver Aljour Miles announced he would be headed to Dallas. The Kaufman (Texas) prospect had offers from several top programs around the country, but will stay close to home. SMU has posted two consecutive 11-3 seasons under head coach Rhett Lashlee and it appears the Mustangs will be competitive in the ACC this year after making the College Football Playoff. As a junior, Miles caught 81 passes for 1,437 yards and 14 TDs with 17.7 yards per reception in 12 games. Advertisement At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Miles is ranked as the No. 70 wide receiver in the nation and No. 57 overall prospect in the country, according to 247Sports. He's a physical receiver who will use his length for 50/50 balls. "Consistently maximizes catch windows with superior physical tools. Effective to all levels with encouraging route snap, spatial awareness, and dexterous strength that often wins in a crowd," 247Sports' Gabe Brooks said about Miles. Related: Former SMU four-star running back on the move again SMU offered Miles a scholarship nearly a full year ago and kept pursuing the talented receiver with SEC visits on the books. The Mustangs hosted a massive group of visitors this weekend with Miles ready to work.

Fans react to Beaver Stadium renovations in person at Blue-White Game

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WTAJ) — Fans got a look at the new and upcoming Beaver Stadium while attending the annual Blue-White Game Saturday. The athletic department has entered into a multi-year project to revitalize the stadium after the football team's win in its lone home game in its run in the College Football Playoff. In December, the athletic department started the project by tearing down the press box and the upper section of the west side bleachers. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Penn State unveils Beaver Stadium renovation plans, upgrades The fans have not attended an event at the stadium since Penn State's game against the SMU Mustangs. Returning to Beaver Stadium to see the makeover brought mixed reactions from fans, students and alumni. 'Being an alumnus or being a student here was disheartening, going out on a stroll up to Beaver Stadium to see construction and the side of the stadium gone,' Mia Rayman, a Penn State alumna, said. 'It's hard to see the stadium that you've always known in kind of the condition it's in right now,' season ticket holder Jennifer Switzler said. While some feel the nostalgic feeling drifting away, others are more optimistic, even if their seats were taken out due to the demolition, like the Reidmiller family. 'It's kind of cool to see the progress that they made over the last couple of months,' Chase Reidmiller, an incoming freshman at Penn State University, said. 'I'm definitely looking forward to going in there and seeing what kind of progress it has made so far,' Penn State senior Alex Schaaf said. The press box demolition on the west side is one phase of a multi-phase plan over the next couple of years, with an end date before the 2027 season. Some fans have added their two cents to upgrades around the concourse. 'There are a couple of challenges,' Rayman said. 'Just traffic, and then of course, they can build the cell tower a little bit of a wider range.' The fans do see the steps the athletic department is making to match up to similar opponents in the sport, in part with the ever-growing landscape of college athletics. 'The team's going to other stadiums that have this, so I think it's great for the team, and I think it's great for the visiting team,' Switzler said. 'Overall, I think they're taking care of the student athletes.' 'It's going to help improve the fan experience a lot,' Reidmiller said. 'I'm just kind of excited for it going into my next couple of years of college and stuff.' Once the fans leave the Blue-White Game, they will see more additions to the stadium. The west side of the stadium will add 7,900 temporary seats for the 2025 season. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. College Football Playoff Contender Loses Key Playmaker Via Transfer Portal

It was an amazing season for the SMU Mustangs and head coach Rhett Lashlee, who shocked many by going 11-3 and 8-0 in ACC matchups, leading them to enter the College Football Playoff as the No. 11 seed. They would of course, end up losing to No. 6 Penn State, but they now hold some high expectations entering 2025, with ESPN BET giving them the fourth-best odds (+600) to win their conference. Advertisement Unfortunately, they have been one team that's taken some pretty big hits from the transfer portal and on Monday received more bad news in the form of running back LJ Johnson, who is now in search of a new program. Johnson had originally started his collegiate career with the Texas A&M Aggies in 2021 and in his first two seasons appeared in 10 games, accumulating just 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns. After the 2022 season, he found a home with the Mustangs, where he saw an increased role and in the past two years has made 24 appearances, running the ball 183 times for 879 yards and nine touchdowns. SMU Mustangs running back LJ Johnson Jr. (11) and Temple Owls safety Tywan Francis (19).Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images Coming out of high school, Johnson was a big piece of Texas A&M's 2021 recruiting class, with On3 industry rankings placing him as a four-star prospect, the No. 5 running back and the No. 57 player in the nation. Advertisement Now, though, he's just the latest player from SMU to hit the transfer portal, joining big names such as three-star cornerback Jahari Rogers, three-star quarterback Preston Stone and three-star defensive lineman Omari Abor.
