
Punjab expands free Wi-Fi service with upgraded speeds

The Chief Minister's Free Wi-Fi service has been extended to more areas across Punjab, including Lahore. The number of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Lahore has increased from 200 to 230, and the service has now been upgraded to the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology.
According to a spokesperson, the switch to Wi-Fi 6 technology will provide users with faster and more stable internet service. The Safe Cities Authority is offering free Wi-Fi at 300 locations across 11 districts in Punjab.
This service is currently active in Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Attock, with residents in Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree also benefiting from the service at key locations. The spokesperson for Safe Cities confirmed that the free Wi-Fi service will soon be expanded throughout the entire province.
To date, over 17.7 million users have accessed the service, with a total of 438 terabytes of data used. Residents have expressed satisfaction, noting that the service has made their daily activities easier.
The spokesperson also clarified that the free Wi-Fi service is intended for emergency use and will not be available for video streaming or entertainment purposes. Following the orders of the Chief Minister of Punjab, efforts are ongoing to transform the province into a digital hub.
Earlier, Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz revealed ambitious plans to upgrade the province's government schools with smart classrooms and digital labs, marking a step towards integrating modern technology into traditional education.
Speaking on Digital Learning Day, Chief Minister Maryam emphasised that in today's world, technological advancement and education go hand in hand.
"Development is now linked to technology, and the youth of Punjab must be equipped with the skills required to meet the demands of the modern world,' she said.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government's efforts to create opportunities for students to align with international market demands, specifically through the introduction of advanced IT training programmes.
As part of these efforts, Punjab is providing students with access to international-standard IT courses, including artificial intelligence (AI), software development, and freelancing.

Punjab's e-taxi project gets approval, pilot to begin with 1,100 electric taxis

During the session, the feasibility report of the Yellow Line mass transit system was presented, and participants were briefed on the province's eco-friendly e-taxi initiative. The meeting granted in-principle approval to the project's financial model and agreed to launch a pilot programme involving 1,100 electric taxis. It was also decided to install solar-powered systems for e-charging stations. Additionally, authorities have requested a report on new routes for the mass transit system in Gujranwala. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif instructed officials to determine routes based on public convenience and ordered that construction on the Yellow Line project, from Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura, be initiated without delay. The meeting also included a detailed review of the e-taxi project. During the briefing, it was disclosed that the Punjab government would offer subsidies under the e-taxi scheme. A proposal to establish charging stations alongside petrol pumps was also discussed. Earlier, CM Maryam Nawaz ordered free treatment of the patients returning from India because of tension in bilateral relations. After the recent outbreak of tension between both countries, Pakistani patients were sent back from India without completion of their treatment.

Speaking at a ceremony at Lahore's historic University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Nawaz inaugurated the first phase of the scheme by distributing laptops and engaging with students directly, instead of addressing them from the stage. She also launched the second phase of the 'Honahar Scholarship' programme, which will offer financial assistance to thousands of students. Officials confirmed that an online portal has been set up for students from other provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. While Punjab will receive the largest share of the laptops, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be allocated 3,136, followed by Balochistan with 938, AJK with 517, and Gilgit-Baltistan with 410. Under the Honahar Scholarship Phase II, students in their second to fifth year or third to eighth semesters will be awarded PKR 20,000 each. In Lahore Division, over 3,121 students from 27 public colleges, six medical colleges, and several universities will benefit from scholarships worth more than PKR 120 million. Additionally, 14,000 students in Lahore Division will receive laptops under the scheme, with distribution occurring across 13 public universities, six medical colleges, and 27 higher education institutions. The event also included a ceremonial guard of honour presented to students, while a special documentary on the laptop scheme and scholarships was screened. UET students performed patriotic songs in celebration. During her address, Maryam Nawaz expressed her confidence in the youth's potential, saying, 'When Pakistan's youth say 'Qadam Qadam Abaad Rahe,' then Inshallah, this land shall forever thrive.'

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday relaunched the province's flagship laptop distribution scheme after an eight-year gap, announcing the first-ever distribution of 13th-generation Core i7 laptops to students. The revival of the scheme marks a major initiative under the new provincial government, with the first phase officially inaugurated by CM Maryam Nawaz at the historic University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, according to a statement issued from the Chief Minister's office. It stated that a total of 5,000 laptops will be distributed to students from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. 'Among these, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will receive the highest share with 3,136 laptops, followed by Balochistan with 938, Azad Jammu & Kashmir with 517, and Gilgit-Baltistan with 410 laptops,' the statemtn said, adding that an online portal has been launched to facilitate applications from students in these regions to streamline the process. 'Hunarmand Scholarship Phase-II' launched In addition to the laptop scheme, the chief minister also announced the launch of Phase II of the 'Hunarmand Scholarship' program. Under this phase, 20,000 scholarships will be awarded to deserving students enrolled from the third to the eighth semester and those pursuing degrees lasting two to five years, the statement said. 'This initiative is aimed at promoting merit-based support for talented youth and increasing access to digital and educational resources across Pakistan,' it added.
