Ladies, would you carry this tarty Waitrose bag?
'So,' she says, 'I baptised them and confirmed them, and we haven't seen them since…'
Musical youth
WHEN Cameron Merriweather from Larkhall was a young chap he occasionally played in a ceilidh band, and there were various reactions to the performances.
On one evening the singer was crooning a slow, sad song from Tiree.
Cameron noticed that a lady in the front row was becoming emotional, with tears flowing down her cheeks.
At the end of the number the singer went forward to comfort her.
'Are you from Tiree?' she asked. 'I saw that you were quite upset. Was it the Tiree song?'
'No,' came the reply. 'I'm a singing teacher.'
Chip chat
THE serving staff in dining establishments aren't merely in the 'trying to reach the table without dropping the plate of soup' business.
They are also communications professionals. Though admittedly not all of them have mastered this second skill.
While visiting a restaurant, reader Willie Mould overheard the woman at the next table say to the young waitress: 'Tell me more about your triple-cooked chips…'
'Well,' replied the well-informed waitress, 'they're chips that have been cooked three times.'
Love, Italian style
FINE dining, continued.
Reader Bob Smallwood tells us that he went on a first date the other evening, and to impress the comely lass he was with, he splashed out by taking her to a swanky Italian restaurant.
'It cost me a pretty penne,' he says.
China dolls
THE Diary's Far East correspondent David Donaldson files a report regarding a scientific breakthrough which will delight every grubby geezer in a seedy grey raincoat.
In China, advances have been made in the construction of those fake-female automatons that some blokes purchase, rather than brave the entanglements of an adult relationship with a flesh and blood human being.
Developments in AI (artificial intelligence) have made the risqué robots more lifelike, though apparently not lifelike enough to dump the dodgy dudes buying them.
Meanwhile, our correspondent wonders how those same blokes are attempting to woo their AI enhanced robot partners.
'Must be using ChatUpGPT,' he suggests.
Fab at folding
CREATIVE reader Emma O'Brien proudly reveals: 'I got an 'A' in my origami assessment when I turned my paper in to my teacher.'

11 places you probably remember going if you were dating in the 80s
There was no online dating, no Tinder or Grindr, and no smartphones, for a start. But if you were taking someone out on a date during the 1980s, there were a few places you probably ended up. We've put together a list of the most popular spots and activities for a date back then - perfect for anyone who wants to recreate that 80s dating experience. Just don't forget the big hair and shoulder pads, and be sure to leave the phone at home and arrange a meeting place and time. All these venues and activities were cheap, and in some cases free, making them the perfect choice for young romantics back then. Most of them are still options for a date, though some of the 80s venues have sadly closed. If you enjoyed this trip down memory lane, you might want to take a look at these nostalgic photos showing popular restaurant chains of the 70s, 80s and 90s that we have lost. 1 . Pizzaland Nothing screams romance like Italian food. If you wanted to impress your date on a budget, you might have taken them to Pizzaland, which was huge during the 80s. The popular chain ran a 'pizza for a penny' offer, with coupons available in newspapers. | National World Photo Sales 2 . Roller disco Roller skating was all the rage in the 80s, with even Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz getting in on the act. Perhaps you took your date to the roller disco and tried to impress them with your moves - or just avoid ending up on your backside. | Getty Images Photo: Fox Photos/Hulton Archive Photo Sales 3 . A trip to the cinema The cinema has always been a popular spot for romance, with lovers canoodling in the back row under the dimmed lighting. Rom-coms ruled during the 80s, with classics like When Harry Met Sally, Dirty Dancing, Splash, and Overboard all enchanting moviegoers. | Shields Gazette Photo Sales 4 . A meal at your local Berni Inn Berni Inn steakhouses were everywhere during the 80s, and they were a safe bet for a first date. The food was affordable and reliably good, with prawn cocktail starters and black forest gateau for dessert among the most popular items on the menu, along with steak and chips. | Derbyshire Times/Chesterfield Library Photo: Derbyshire Times/Chesterfield Library Photo Sales
