Shedeur Sanders sits out Saturday's Browns practice due to ‘arm soreness'

At least for one day, the Cleveland Browns' four-man quarterback competition was down to two.
Rookie Shedeur Sanders did not participate in any competitive drills during Saturday morning's practice. It wasn't until after practice that the team provided an update, via a Browns spokesperson: Sanders was held out due to 'arm soreness.' Cleveland.com reported that Sanders told the team's medical staff he was feeling some soreness during early-practice individual drills, and that Sanders would be further evaluated Saturday afternoon.

Sanders had been a full participant in each of the team's eight previous practices. He was fourth in line throughout the spring and early part of training camp before Kenny Pickett suffered a hamstring injury that forced Pickett to miss three practices earlier this week.
Pickett was back at practice Friday and Saturday as a limited participant, mostly taking part in individual drills. With only two quarterbacks fully available on Saturday, Joe Flacco got 26 reps in competitive drills and rookie Dillon Gabriel got 25. There was some mixing and matching of personnel groups, but Flacco played almost exclusively with the No. 1 offensive line and Gabriel operated the second and third offensive units, outside of one drill with mostly starters.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has said he has no firm timeline for naming a regular-season starter or finalizing a depth chart, but the Browns are headed toward their most important evaluation points with question marks about availability. Cleveland will hold a joint practice session in Charlotte with the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 6 before the Aug. 8 preseason opener for both teams. The following week, the Browns practice twice with the Eagles in Philadelphia ahead of an Aug. 16 preseason game.
Flacco's two best throwing days were Friday and Saturday, while Gabriel has struggled with accuracy and stringing together completions. With Flacco seemingly in the lead for now, Pickett told reporters it's 'frustrating to not be out there competing' but said he understands he can't rush back and risk making the injury worse.
Both Pickett and Stefanski said it's too early to know if Pickett will be able to participate in Carolina next week. Stefanski's standard daily press conference was held before practice Saturday, and he did not reveal any potential issues or limitations with Sanders.

After practice Saturday, Pickett and Gabriel threw some 1-on-1 drills to some of the Browns' young wide receivers and tight ends. Sanders jogged on a different practice field with the team's older wide receivers, but he did not throw. The Browns have held opportunity periods after four previous practices during which Gabriel and Sanders have split extra reps equally in different competitive settings.
Sanders is the only of the four who hasn't taken at least some reps with the No. 1 starters. Stefanski has not revealed his plans for playing time in the preseason opener next Friday, and now he might have to stay flexible with those plans based on availability.
Sunday is a day off for Browns players. The team will practice Monday afternoon before flying to Charlotte Tuesday.

Braves defeat Reds in MLB Speedway Classic, event sets attendance record for tickets sold

The MLB Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds set the all-time regular-season single-game attendance record on Saturday with 91,032 tickets sold for the event at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. With that figure, the event surpassed the crowd of 84,587 who were in attendance to see Cleveland host the New York Yankees at Municipal Stadium on Sept. 12, 1954. However, Saturday's game was postponed after a 2 1/2-hour rain delay and resumed on Sunday. Under MLB rules, a game does not become official until after five innings have been completed. An official attendance figure for the event was not announced by Major League Baseball, but a noticeably lesser amount of fans returned to the Speedway on Sunday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] On the FOX broadcast, John Smoltz estimated that half of the fans ("maybe three-quarters") from Saturday returned to Bristol on Sunday, but that was obviously not an official count. According to MLB, fans from the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, nine countries and four continents purchased tickets for the game at Bristol Motor Speedway. Pregame festivities included a flyover by four U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach and a ceremonial first pitch featuring Hall of Famers Chipper Jones and Johnny Bench. Braves won Speedway Classic, 4-2 Reliever Austin Cox ended up starting the game after a 2 1/2-hour rain delay scratched Spencer Strider from pitching for the Braves. The Reds took a 1-0 lead on an Austin Hays RBI single when the game was postponed after the first inning. The game resumed on Sunday with Elly De La Cruz and Hays stealing bases. De La Cruz was tagged out at home attempting to score on a sharp Miguel Andujar grounder to third base. However, Atlanta third baseman Austin Riley appeared to hurt himself while stretching to make the tag. He left the game with what the Braves announced as lower abdominal pain. Riley just returned from the injured list with a lower abdominal strain, so it's possible he re-aggravated that injury. Eli White gave Atlanta the lead in the top of the second with a 3-run homer off a high changeup from Brent Suter. Cincinnati closed the margin to 3-2 on a sacrifice fly following Hurston Waldrep loaded the bases on two walks and a single. However, White restored Atlanta's 2-run lead with his second homer of the game in the seventh inning, taking Scott Barlow deep. As the Braves' social media account put it, White is the only MLB player to ever hit two home runs in the state of Tennessee. The Reds put the tying run on base in the ninth with Braves closer Raisel Iglesias giving up consecutive singles to TJ Friedl and Matt McLain. But Iglesias retired the next three batters to close out the win for Atlanta. The Braves improved to 47-63, while Cincinnati dropped to 58-54, 3.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the National League's final wild-card playoff berth. Sixth time MLB has had 80,000-plus for a regular-season game Only five other games in MLB regular-season history have broken the 80,000 attendance mark, according to the Hall of Fame, with the first happening on Sept. 9, 1928, during a doubleheader between the Philadelphia Athletics and New York Yankees. The most recent occurrence was in 1993, when 80,277 watched the Colorado Rockies play their first game at Mile High Stadium in Denver. As for the postseason single-game attendance record, that is owned by the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the 1959 World Series, 92,706 packed Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch the Dodgers play the Chicago White Sox in Game 5.

Dodgers manufacture enough offense to slip past Tampa Bay Rays

Scoring runs at Steinbrenner Field should not be as hard as the Dodgers made it look this weekend. The spring training ballpark, which is doubling as the Tampa Bay Rays' temporary home this season after Tropicana Field was shredded in an offseason hurricane, has small Yankee Stadium-inspired dimensions that played even shorter in this weekend's sweltering Florida summer heat. Yet, for 18 innings from late Friday night to midway through Sunday afternoon, the Dodgers put nothing but zeros on the scoreboard. They couldn't capitalize on the short porch in right field. They didn't run into any cheap home runs amid conditions that should have helped the ball fly. During a 3-0 win over the Rays on Sunday, the Dodgers manufactured offense in different kinds of ways. In the top of the sixth, third base coach Dino Ebel decided to wave his arm on an aggressive send of Freddie Freeman, who went chugging around third base to score just ahead of a tag at home on Andy Pages' RBI single to left. In the seventh, they needed a swinging-bunt single from Shohei Ohtani, a one-out walk from Mookie Betts and a double-steal from both players to set up Freeman for another RBI single. And in the ninth, they extended their lead with a sacrifice fly from Betts at the end of a 10-pitch battle for a key insurance run. Such results will do little to quell the concerns about the Dodgers' slumping lineup, which has seen a brutal performance in July (when they scored the third-fewest runs in the majors) continue into the early days of August. But on a day Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered 5 ⅔ scoreless innings and the Dodgers' bullpen completed a second shutout of the Rays in this weekend's series victory — despite a bases-loaded scare in the bottom of the ninth — it was nonetheless enough to ensure the team returned home from this nine-game road trip with a winning 5-4 record. The Dodgers' ongoing search for offense included another twist on Sunday morning. Two weeks after flipping Ohtani and Betts at the top of the batting order, manager Dave Roberts reversed course by returning Ohtani to the top spot and dropping Betts — who has remained mired in his season-long slump — into the two-hole. Early on, the results weren't promising. Read more: From a day off to the leadoff spot, Dodgers try unraveling mystery of Mookie Betts' slump Betts grounded into a double-play in the first inning, immediately after Ohtani had led off with a walk. In the fifth, the Rays intentionally walked Ohtani to put two aboard in front of Betts. But he flied out to center to end the inning, extending his recent hitless streak to 16 at-bats. 'It's kind of just trying to figure out what's best short term,' Roberts said of the lineup adjustment, while remaining undecided on how the batting order will look in the coming days. 'With [Teoscar Hernández, who got an off day] not being in there, this was the best lineup for today.' Roberts hinted that more tinkering could happen once Max Muncy returns from the injured list, which could happen as soon as Monday — especially after infielder Tommy Edman left Sunday's game early with a sprained right ankle, aggravating his lingering ankle injury while rounding first base on a single in the fifth. Read more: With a little help from a Coldplay meme, Freddie Freeman stays hot in Dodgers' win Roberts also left open the possibility of Betts, who saw his season batting average dip to .233 despite his seventh-inning walk and ninth-inning sacrifice fly, dropping further down the batting order at some point, as he continues to search for answers to his faltering swing. "I've thought about it,' Roberts said. 'I think it's a totally fair question. I'm just trying to figure out what would be best for him, for the team. But yeah, I've thought about it.' For now, however, the Dodgers are clinging to what positives they can. Ohtani entered Sunday in a recent skid that included 20 strikeouts in his last 10 games, but managed to reach base four total times to go along with two steals. Freeman stayed hot with his second three-hit performance of the trip, raising his batting average (which had slipped to .292 just a week ago) up to .306. And by the end of the day, even Betts had pitched in, following up his seventh-inning walk by staying alive against reliever Griffin Jax for his sacrifice fly in the ninth. Could the Boston Celtics still sign free agent big man Charles Bassey?

Could the Boston Celtics still sign free agent big man Charles Bassey? It seems that earlier reports hinting at the former San Antonio Spurs reserve center heading to Europe to sign with Serbian ball club Partizan may be premature, per recent reporting from Celtics Blog's Noa Dalzell. But is is also unclear as to whether or not Boston's front office is looking to bring on the Sin City Celtics standout, despite Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens singing his praises after a strong showing in the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League. The team's tenuous status as a first apron team might also be playing a role in any decisions about Bassey to Boston. Might there be a potential partnership to be had here, or is this a case of fans latching on to a summer league star that ultimately is not likely to pan out? Also the host of the CLNS Media "You Got Boston" podcast, Dalzell took some time on a recent episode of her show to talk it over. Check it out below!
