Digital platform aids over 88,000 S'gor businesses

ALMOST 90,000 small-scale businesses have benefitted from Platform Selangor (PLATS), created to help tide them over during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The digital directory and promotional platform was developed in 2020 to aid hawkers and small-scale retailers who could not conduct their business during the movement control order (MCO).
'Over 88,000 businesses have participated and benefitted from this platform.
'We hope by the end of this year, we will reach 100,000 users,' said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari during the Platform Selangor strategic partners' appreciation ceremony at the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam.

'PLATS was conceived to help entrepreneurs and micro-business owners who were unable to operate due to the MCO.
'Selangor became the first to offer Ramadan bazaar traders the opportunity to shift their business online through this digital platform.
'It has been around for five years and has enabled business opportunities beyond physical spaces, thus reaching a wider market. Several business owners have also achieved record sales.'
Amirudin said PLATS recorded RM2.3mil in sales with 71,294 business transactions between Oct 20, 2024, and July 7, 2025.
'On average, daily sales are about RM13,417.70 for each active business operator between October last year and July this year,' he elaborated.
He cited the success story of Dapur Kak Mala, a food and beverage business operator from Sabak Bernam that has been active on PLATS since December 2024.
The business, he said, had total accumulated sales of RM262,443, with average monthly sales of RM50,000.
'This is comparable to the amount of sales achieved at food kiosks in prominent malls.'
Amirudin said PLATS' success was proof that with access to opportunities, small village traders were able to reap sales like city business players.
He attributed the success of PLATS to Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) Selangor and Yayasan MBI.
State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said six new strategic partners were now part of PLATS to further enhance the system's success.
They are Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (Pernas), MYNIC Bhd, Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), Red Giant Creative House Sdn Bhd (RGCH), Sirim Bhd and Media Selangor Sdn Bhd.
Selangor's 12 local councils were also acknowledged for collectively throwing their support behind PLATS.
Mohd Najwan said Agrobank also provided business infrastructure and tents this year for 1,500 Ramadan bazaars in 15 locations across five local councils.
'As a result of this initiative, total sales transactions this year recorded through Agrobank's facilities reached RM7.11mil,' he said, noting that among the locations with the highest performance was the Stadium Shah Alam Ramadan bazaar.
'It recorded participation from over 200 traders and sales transactions amounting to RM2.18mil, making it the most active bazaar in Selangor,' said Mohd Najwan.

India to resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens

HONG KONG: India will resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens from July 24 this year, its embassy in China said on July 23, the first time in five years as both countries move to repair their rocky relationship. Tensions between the two countries escalated following a 2020 military clash along their disputed Himalayan border. In response, India imposed restrictions on Chinese investments, banned hundreds of popular Chinese apps and cut passenger routes. China suspended visas to Indian citizens and other foreigners around the same time due to the Covid-19 pandemic but lifted those restrictions in 2022, when it resumed issuing visas for students and business travellers. Tourist visas for Indian nationals remained restricted until March this year, when both countries agreed to resume direct air service. Relations have gradually improved, with several high-level meetings taking place last year, including talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Russia in October. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that Beijing had noted the positive move. "China is ready to maintain communication and consultation with India and constantly improve the level of personal exchanges between the two countries," he said. India and China share a 3,800km (2,400-mile) border that has been disputed since the 1950s. The two countries fought a brief but brutal border war in 1962 and negotiations to settle the dispute have made slow progress. In July, India's foreign minister told his Chinese counterpart that both countries must resolve border friction, pull back troops and avoid "restrictive trade measures" to normalise their relationship. - Reuters

Malaysia increases aid for 2025 to ease cost of living pressures

KUALA LUMPUR: The increase in the allocation for various forms of financial assistance for 2025 proves the commitment of the MADANI Government in its efforts to reduce the cost of living pressures faced by the people, while also driving sustainable and resilient economic growth. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said among the key initiatives was the increase in the allocation for the Sumbangan TunaI Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) to RM13 billion this year, compared to RM10 billion, which benefits almost nine million recipients or 60 per cent of the adult population. 'The maximum rate for households in 2025 has also been increased to RM4,600, an increase of almost 25 per cent compared to RM3,700 in 2024. 'The government has also raised the allocation for assistance under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) to RM2.9 billion for 2025 compared to RM2.4 billion previously,' she said in reply to a question by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin during question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today. Hamzah raised a question regarding the government's strategy to reduce the burden of the people's cost of living, following the country's total debt which has now reached RM1.5 trillion. Lim said other assistance included the Elderly Assistance being increased to RM600 per month compared to RM500, an increase in the Child Assistance for Poor Families to RM250 (six years and below) and RM200 (seven to 18 years), subject to a maximum rate of RM1,000 per family. Also increased is the General Assistance in the Federal Territories to RM150 per month compared to RM100, with a maximum rate of RM500 per family. 'The government has also allocated RM1 billion for various initiatives to address the cost of living comprehensively, including price control of basic goods such as rice and cooking oil. 'Of that amount, RM300 million is allocated specifically for the RAHMAH Umbrella Programme, including the expansion of RAHMAH Sales to all state constituencies to offer basic goods at affordable prices,' he said. She said the remaining RM700 million was used to expand the implementation of other cost of living reduction programmes targeting the B40 and M40 groups. In addition, Lim said the government would also continue the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) as a strategic effort to help parents provide for their children's educational needs, in addition to the MADANI Subsidy Assistance (BUDI MADANI) as a subsidy to the public transport sector, farmers, breeders, smallholders and individual diesel vehicle owners. 'The government is also implementing the My50 Monthly Pass which benefits public transport users in the Klang Valley, especially from the B40 and M40 groups,' she said. She said increasing the people's income was also given focus through the increase in civil servant salaries and the minimum wage which was increased from RM1,500 to RM1,700. 'These measures are important to ensure that the country's economy continues to grow towards realising the objectives under the MADANI Economy framework,' she said. - Bernama

Govt to launch Sejahtera Madani tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will launch the Sejahtera Madani initiative tomorrow as part of its ongoing efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the launch is a continuation of the government's commitment to ensuring that the hardcore poor and the poor continue to be assisted through joint efforts by the government and the corporate sector. "The effort to eradicate hardcore poverty has been my priority since the beginning. Almost 150 thousand hardcore poor households in 2023 have been lifted out of the hardcore poor group by the end of 2024. "Tomorrow, I will launch Sejahtera Madani, which is an effort to continue to ensure that the hardcore poor and the poor are properly assisted through joint efforts by the government and the corporate sector," said Anwar. He said this at the Special Appreciation Announcement for Malaysians, which was broadcast live on all major television channels and social media platforms today. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government has continued to improve various forms of assistance to ease the burden of the people's living expenses since the beginning of his administration. He said among the significant steps that have been taken is the highest allocation channelled to the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) at RM13 billion, which is the highest amount in history. "(In addition), the allocation of cash assistance under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has also been increased to RM2.9 billion, among other things, to increase the monthly welfare assistance rate for the elderly and children from poor families," he said. Anwar said the Madani government is also clearly defending the fate of padi farmers, including raising the Padi Purchase Floor Price to RM1,500 in 2025, after increases in 2022 and 2023, besides the Padi Price Subsidy Scheme Rate also being increased to RM500 in 2023. In the commodity sector, he said the government also increased the Rubber Production Incentive (IPG) to RM3 per kilogramme in 2024, after increases given in 2022 and 2023. Anwar today also announced a one-off RM100 grant to every adult citizen aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, a postponement of toll rate increases for 10 highways, and a lower RON95 subsidy price of RM1.99 per litre. He said several more new measures and initiatives would be introduced in the 2026 Budget scheduled to be presented in October. "This (the initiative announced today) is at least a temporary measure. By the end of 2025, Insyaalah, we will improve with a clear commitment to provide benefits in 2026 in the Budget 2026 in October," he said. He said the Madani Government is committed to continuing to steer the country's administration more responsibly by introducing policies and actions that can guarantee comfort for the people. -- BERNAMA
