Saiyaara director Mohit Suri is a ‘bright, young boy' but I don't see the ‘original voice' of Anupam Kher's Tanvi The Great, says Mahesh Bhatt: ‘It is entertainment for the soul'

Mahesh Bhatt's mentorship has proven to reap great benefits this year as several of his former associates and proteges have come into their own as directors yet again in July 2025. Firstly, Anurag Basu, whom he launched as a director in Saaya (2003), recently delivered the much-loved romantic musical Metro… In Dino.
On July 18, two other talents that Bhatt launched have also come up with their directorials. Bhatt's nephew Mohit Suri, whom he launched with Zeher (2005), delivered Saiyaara, a blockbuster romantic drama starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, backed by Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films. But that's not the film Bhatt has his money on.
'There's another young filmmaker, who happens to be my nephew, Mohit Suri. He's made a film called Saiyaara, which is coming on 18th. He made Aashiqui 2 (2013) for me. He's a bright, young boy. He has his own style, and he's coming into his own,' said Bhatt on The Himanshu Mehta Show, but added that he doesn't see an original voice in the movies today.
'But I don't see an original voice in the landscape today. The burden of an instant box office hit, this box office albatross is weighing down everybody. It makes people take plots and stories which titillate and cater to the senses,' added Bhatt. Saiyaara has become the highest grossing Hindi film with newcomers, having collected over Rs 250 crore in 11 days at the domestic box office.
'The dopamine (on smartphones) has been numbing your senses. Because you want to escape the reality of the world. Our filmmakers and singers of bygone days would throw you into yourself. Now, content is used as a way to escape yourself. Anything that takes you away from yourself is popcorn, like candyfloss. I don't see filmmakers with great depth anymore,' argued Bhatt.
He claimed the only film with an 'original voice' he's seen recently is Anupam Kher's coming-of-age drama Tanvi The Great. Kher was also launched by Bhatt as an actor in his 1984 family drama Saaransh. Bhatt admitted his choice could be out of 'emotional bias,' but he's a biased human being 'like anybody else.'
'It's a film which roots for the most vulnerable, an autistic child. And he's put in all his own money,' said Bhatt, calling Tanvi The Great 'entertainment for the soul.' 'I'm awestruck by his courage. I'm so proud that what I ripped up in him, which was there in him, 41 years ago in Saaransh, is now coming into full bloom, and on his own,' added Bhatt.

Tanvi The Great, inspired from Kher's real-life niece named Tanvi who's autistic, marks his return to direction 23 years after his 2002 directorial debut Om Jai Jagdish. It marks the debut of Shubhangi Sharma, and also stars Pallavi Joshi, Jackie Shroff, Karan Tacker, Prakash Raj, and Aravind Swamy among others.

The musical romantic drama has struck a chord with especially with Gen Z, and since the release, the videos of people crying and shouting inside the theatres have been going viral on social media. Now, Kajol's sister and actress Tanishaa Mukerji has slammed a person who claimed that these reactions were planned by the makers and paid people money to cry and shout in a podcast titled The Asymmetric Crew featuring the creator, The Barber Shop with Shantanu. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Completely disagree. Times are changing and these people are stuck in the past. Love and appreciate the new. And honestly, what rubbish is this man saying? Does he know anything for a fact. He is using the phenomenon of _Saiyaara_ to get views by talking negatively. If people are reacting to a film what is so wrong about that. Just because he cannot relate doesn't mean the younger generation doesn't either. Every generation is different. This is India. We react. Go watch the film see how the audiences are moved. Then talk. This is just Bollywood bashing ! Brands just have to find new ways to connect to their audiences!' Mukerji commented on the reel, replying to his claim. Talking about Saiyaara, the film backed by YRF has crossed the Rs 270 crore mark at the box office and is now marching towards the Rs 300 crore club. Directed by Mohit Suri, the movie is currently the second highest grosser of the year after Chhaava beating biggies like Housefull 5, Raid 2, Sitaare Zameen Par and others. The film will now face a screen crunch with the arrival of Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Siddhant Chaturvedi-Triptii Dimri's Dhadak 2. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 struggles for screens amid Saiyaara wave, makers offer 50% discounted tickets

The unexpected, unprecedented box office success of Mohit Suri's romantic drama Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, took the film industry by surprise. It prompted Ajay Devgn to push his new release, Vijay Kumar Arora's comedy Son of Sardaar 2, by a week from July 25 to August 1 in order to ensure enough screens for his long-awaited sequel. However, as Saiyaara continues its dominant run, with last week's release following closely, it looks like Son of Sardaar 2 won't get the number of screens it was aiming for, especially in the single screens or non-national cinema chains. While PVRINOX is trying to get 60% of shows across all Indian screens, it may just have to settle for a meagre 35%. As per a Pinkvilla report, Son of Sardaar 2 distributors PVRINOX has been insisting on four shows a day from single screens. However, many of these single screens have decided to skip Son of Sardaar 2 altogether to have more shows of both Saiyaara and Ashwin Kumar's animated mythological film Mahavatar Narsimha, which is presented by Hombale Films, the production house behind pan-India blockbusters like KGF and Kantara. Saiyaara, which released on July 18, is now in its second week, but in no mood to slow down. It's collected Rs 266 crore at the domestic box office in just 12 days. It's also become the highest-grossing Hindi film starring newcomers. It's backed by Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films, which famously jostled with Devgn Films back in 2012 when the first part, Ashwni Dhir's Son of Sardaar, released in cinemas. Devgn sued YRF for illegally snatching away screens from Son of Sardaar on Diwali in favour of Yash Chopra's romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma. YRF had struck a deal with cinemas across the country in which they had to give majority screens to Jab Tak Hai Jaan in advance while buying YRF's previous blockbuster, Kabir Khan's spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger, starring Salman Khan and Katrina. Along with Saiyaara, Mahavatar Narsimha is also proving to be a formidable competition to Son of Sardaar 2. The film has already collected Rs 29.35 crore in just five days of run at the domestic box office. To make matters worse, Shazia Iqbal's romantic drama Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, is also releasing in cinemas this Friday on August 1. Like Son of Sardaar 2, Dhadak 2 is also a sequel — to Shashank Khaitan's 2018 hit Dhadak — albeit with a new cast and director. The production house, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, is going the Kesari 2 way with this film. It's releasing only in 1000 screens across India, focusing on the urban centres, with more screens expected to add in case the word of mouth is in their favour. In order to attract footfalls, both the new releases — Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 — are offering 50% discounts on ticket prices using certain coupon codes. Also Read — Ajay Devgn had to rescue Deepak Dobriyal on Son of Sardaar 2 set after a woman pulled him to ladies washroom: 'He plays a woman in the film' With all these odds stacked against Son of Sardaar 2, as of now, the film is expected to rake in an opening day domestic figure in single digits — in the range of Rs 6 to Rs 9 crore. That's not only a massive drop from the opening day figure of Devgn's last release, Raj Kumar Gupta's thriller Raid 2 (Rs 19 crore) earlier this year, but even a decline from the opening day figure of Son of Sardaar (Rs 10 crore+) back in 2012.
