'My choice is to make it, your choice is to watch it': Aamir Khan claps back at Sitaare Zameen Par trolls
In an industry obsessed with originality,
Aamir Khan
is taking a stand that might raise a few eyebrows. The Bollywood superstar, often praised for his bold choices, is unfazed by the recent criticism surrounding his upcoming film
Sitaare Zameen Par
, which has been accused of being a frame-by-frame remake of the Spanish hit
Campeones
. In a time when remakes are scrutinised more than ever, Aamir isn't just defending them, he's proudly owning it.
Speaking candidly at a group interaction with PTI, Aamir addressed the backlash head-on. He pointed out that this isn't his first time remaking a film, and certainly won't be the last. 'I believe in remakes and I will do it all my life,' he said. 'Whenever I get a good remake, I will do it. Why shouldn't I do it? If you don't want to see it, then don't see it. It's your choice.'
Remakes a new canvas for Aamir Khan
Laal Singh Chaddha, his previous release, was an official remake of Forrest Gump and had its share of trolling. But the actor, known for his meticulous process, isn't bothered. In fact, on Raj Shamani's podcast, he called himself 'a little crazy' and 'not very practical,' proudly admitting he doesn't see remaking stories as a creative compromise. It's a new canvas for him, and that adapting someone else's story through his lens still feels creatively fulfilling.
He even brought up Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Ghajini as successful remakes from his own filmography. In defence of remakes, he made a sharp comparison with Shakespeare. PTI reported that the actor asked why Shakespeare is still respected today. He added that his plays have been adapted a thousand times, but people are still doing Hamlet, because, he believes, great stories deserve to be retold.

About Sitaare Zameen Par
And Sitaare Zameen Par, he insists, isn't just a copy-paste job. The film touches upon the important and underrepresented topic of neurodivergence. Aamir, who also produced and stars in the film, said that if Campeones helped Spanish audiences better understand neurodivergent individuals, then he hopes Sitaare Zameen Par can spark similar conversations in India.
Directed by R. S. Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par follows Aamir's character Gulshan, an assistant coach who, after being fired, is forced to choose between jail time or 90 days of community service coaching a team of specially-abled basketball players. It also stars Genelia D'Souza and is slated for a June 20 release.
