From Kyiv to the Kelpies as Angus dad who fled Ukraine invasion tackles charity abseil
Lloyd Gwishiri from Brechin is taking on the fundraiser for charity Children First.
He became a trustee of the organisation after his family was forced to leave their home in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in 2022.
The personal experience of fleeing the Russian invasion inspired Lloyd to become involved with Children First.
And he is curious about abseiling down the massive equine sculptures having never actually seen them in real life.
Lloyd said: 'The experience of leaving Ukraine was quite traumatising for anyone who went through it at the time.
'It was hard going through the steps of moving from country to country via public transport. It was quite intense.'
The family eventually settled in Brechin. Lloyd has been keen to get involved in more fundraising work after becoming active in the local community.
He is a popular coach at Brechin Boxing Club.
After joining Children First as a board member nine months ago, he said taking on the Kelpies would be a 'fun and interesting adventure'.
The exciting challenge involves climbing inside the world's largest equine sculptures through a maze of ladders, cables and suspended platforms.
Participants emerge to enjoy the spectacular view right from the horse's mouth.
After conquering the Kelpies, Lloyd will then drop back to the ground.
Lloyd is calling on other daredevils to join him on June 7.
He said: 'I'm terrified of heights.
'I've seen photographs of the Kelpies and I've been planning to go there. But I've never seen the Kelpies in person.
'I'm really looking forward to the experience.'
Lloyd added: 'I know the challenges Children First are facing to raise funds. That was reason enough for me to participate and do whatever else I can for the charity.
'So many children and families tell us that the support they get from Children First is a lifeline.'

The asking price for The Douglas Arms in Castle Douglas is more than £100,000 below the starting bid when it was listed for auction just months ago. A historic Castle Douglas hotel is once again up for sale. The Douglas Arms has gone on the market for £225,000. That's more than £100,000 below the starting bid when it was listed on a property auction website just a few months ago. The hotel on the corner of King Street and St Andrew Street dates back to the 18th century and started life as a coaching inn. It features 23 bedrooms, a bar, a restaurant, function rooms and managers' accommodation. The sale is being managed by Christie and Co and associate director – hospitality, Tony Spence, said: 'This is a great opportunity to acquire a freehold hotel located in the centre of Castle Douglas. 'The hotel is currently vacant however it could once again thrive under the right management. 'In addition to continued use, subject to reinstatement of license, the property also lends itself to various development opportunities, subject to obtaining planning from the local authority.' Christie and Co is marketing The Douglas Arms for sale with a freehold asking price of £225,000. In May, the site was listed on the Future Property Auctions website with a starting bid of £342,000. The property has had a number of owners in the past decade. A community takeover was investigated in 2017 after then owners Tayforth Inns LLP went into administration. In 2021, it was bought by Keezark Ltd, a sister company to Paymán Investments, with the community again keen to get involved. The following year, it started to be used as a welcome hub for Ukrainian families who had fled their country after it was invaded by Ukraine. Most recently, it has been listed of an American real estate investment company called Carre and bookings can still be made on a website called Carre Boutique Hotels. The Douglas Arms is the only hotel listed on the website.
