Birmingham reggae concert to mark Bob Marley's 80th birthday
A special concert celebrating Birmingham's reggae history is to take place on what would have been Bob Marley's 80th birthday.The Reggae Origins concert will see Basil Gabbidon and musicians from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) join forces on Thursday evening at the city's Town Hall.Legendary reggae singer Marley died of cancer at the age of 36 on 11 May 1981.Gabbidon, founding member of the Handsworth-born reggae band Steel Pulse, said the musician would "probably be as surprised as we are" that the genre was growing and still going strong.
"It's amazing how it's just spread across the world," he said of the reggae scene."When you hear Bob Marley's music, it's always been there."The classical and reggae fusion concert will see strings and a full band performing brand new arrangements of songs from the Birmingham Reggae scene, alongside some of Bob Marley's biggest hits.Gabbidon said he had initially approached BCMG a few years ago to try and put the project together but there was no funding for it at the time."It's something I'm looking forward to doing," he said of the concert."I love fusion and I think it's something that needs to be put across, that all music basically is one music."Roots reggae band Steel Pulse was formed in 1975 by school friends who attended Handsworth Wood Boys school.The group became first non-Jamaican act to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.Gabbidon spoke about the Catch A Fire album by Marley's band The Wailers and a track called Concrete Jungle, which he said inspired him to "take guitar seriously" and to start playing the instrument."If it wasn't for that album, I don't think Steel Pulse would have been born," he said."If you listen to Steel Pulse there's a lot of fusion going on in there," he added. "There's funk, a bit of rock... pop."Gabbidon added the Windrush Generation also played an important part in bringing Reggae from Jamaica."They brought the culture, you could say the music culture," he explained."We're in an age now, in Britain, in Birmingham, where's there's a cross-culture thing going on. We're fusing all those various cultures together."

Now, Doncaster-born Louis has silenced speculation that he has become distant from his bandmates as he opened up about his bond with Cheshire's Harry. Speaking on a new podcast, he said he's in regular contact. "I do still know him," he said on the Yoto Daily Soccer Aid Special podcast. Louis went on to say: "I used to be in a band with him, we're not in a band anymore so that's what happens. But yeah, still good friends with him. "Still very, very proud of him, taking over the world, definitely." Fans have since reacted to the sweet admission, with one writing: "Oh God, that's so cute." A second went on to add: "My heart just exploded." "I'm sobbing so f***ng hard. Nobody speak to me. This is the best day ever," exclaimed a third. Meanwhile, a fourth added: "Today just became the best day of my life." Since launching their solo careers, Louis has gone on to release two studio albums, Walls, which charted at Number Four in 2020, as well as Faith in the Future, which saw him take Number One in November 2022. Elsewhere, Harry's debut album charted at Number One, with his second taking the second spot, and his third solo album, Harry's House, hitting the top spot across the globe. He's also bagged an impressive six BRIT Awards and three solo Grammy Awards – despite being nominated nine times. Louis' comments come just days before he'll walk out onto the pitch at Old Trafford as part of Soccer Aid for UNICEF. The musician will play alongside the likes of Tom Grennan, Roman Kemp, Toni Duggan, Jill Scott, Alex Brooker, Angryginge and James Nelson-Joyce. Speaking about taking part in the match, Louis told TV Week: "It's the only real opportunity you get to play in a football game of that magnitude if you're not a professional footballer. So it's very exciting for a football fan, and coupled with all the good that the charity has done over the past two decades, it's remarkable really." But there's one moment that sticks out in Louis's head, playing against Niall in the 2016 game. He said: "I played against my One Direction bandmate Niall Horan in 2016. I'm the kind of guy who will rub it in your face when I win. So I kind of enjoyed having that over Niall for a couple of years!" Louis' younger sisters, twins Daisy and Phoebe, will be on hand to offer their support in the stands. Speaking previously to the Mirror, Phoebe, said: "Obviously, with Louis playing, I've only attended once, but it was really fun. Super excited, Louis playing just makes it more interesting and a bit more funny as well." Daisy commented: "I wouldn't say I feel as nervous seeing him play football than sing but I probably should. He sings more than he plays football but I heard he's been putting in the graft in training so I shouldn't feel too nervous on the day." The match takes place on Sunday 15th of June at Old Trafford, Manchester, and will air on ITV1 and ITVX.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are among the favourites to win the 125th US Open, but neither have been able to get to grips with the Oakmont Country Club's troubling greens The US Open is hitting its stride, yet it's proving a tough nut to crack for top contenders Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Both the Northern Irish golf star and the New Jersey-born icon have bagged the last two majors with victories at the Masters and PGA Championship respectively. The Oakmont Country Club's merciless greens are giving elite players a run for their money, with neither McIlroy nor Scheffler spared from the challenge. According to former pro, and CBS analyst, Dottie Pepper, the pair will now be working on how to break their way back into contention, with two very different views on how the game should be played, reports the Mirror US. Discussing their behaviour on the course and how their styles vary, Pepper, 59, told the Sliced Podcast: "Rory is more apt to roll the dice than Scottie is. Scottie rolls the dice by the way he flights the golf ball into tough targets. "Before the tournament at Pebble [Beach, in January] got started this year, Scottie played at Cyprus and [I] talked to the kid that caddied for him and he said 'I've never seen anything like it'. "Because he never really took on flags directly, the way Rory does. He took a line and moved the golf ball toward it, took a line and moved it right, took a line and moved it left - so everything fed toward the hole. So there's a different flight pattern, there's a different artistry. "They are both extraordinarily powerful. They're both definitely motivated to win, you don't want to get in their way. But Rory has this way of doing something unpredictable and then has that flair to recover." Pepper also remarked that while some golfing aces relish a "big production" with an entourage and high-tech gadgets, Sheffler opts out of such theatrics. "He sees things, he feels things," Pepper added. "Everyone else is out there with their diagnostics and their team, and all of that. But there's not a lot of business around them [Scheffler and his team]." At the time of writing, Scheffler is T45 while Mcilroy is T52. Scheffler endured a first round of 73 and is now in the midst of his second. Speaking after his first round, Scheffler said: "I made some silly mistakes and I just need to be a little sharper." McIlroy had a promising start on Thursday but faltered with four bogeys and a double bogey ending the day at four over 74. The 36-year-old arrived at Oakmont after missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open. He has now hit 71 or higher in five straight rounds, going back to the PGA Championship. McIlroy declined to speak to the media about his round on Thursday, and tees off later on Friday for his second. Meanwhile out in front on the leaderboard is U.S. star JJ Spaun. Thriston Lawrence is currently in second, while Si-Woo Kim and Sam Burns are behind in third.

However, it was his journey to the Maldives that stood out as particularly memorable for Paul, providing him with both relaxation and the opportunity to engage in his hobby of diving. The fish, the sharks, the rays, and the food. "Everyone got bicycles, each villa got bicycles to get around the island on, it wasn't very big, you could literally get around it in a minute, but I loved it. I fell in love with the place."
