Matildas veteran backs Sam Kerr to resume as captain on return to playing
Matildas vice-captain Emily van Egmond has thrown her support behind Sam Kerr to continue as captain when the star striker is ready to resume playing with the national side.
Kerr has joined a Matildas camp for the first time since injuring her knee in training with club side Chelsea more than a year ago, ahead of a pair of friendlies on home soil against South Korea.
Football Australia cleared the way for the 31-year-old to take back the captain's armband by deciding not to sanction the striker for a late-night incident in the UK during which she verbally abused a police officer.
Kerr on Monday expressed 'sincere regret' for the events that followed a night out in London in early 2023 and led to a criminal trial where she was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment in February.
Van Egmond said that Kerr 'definitely should not be stepping down' as Matildas captain once she is ready to play again.
'The federation have come out and said what they need to say,' Van Egmond added.
'Obviously Sammy's had her side to say as well, and as teammates and a team, we're in full support of her, and we're just looking forward to the game now on Friday.'
Steph Catley has stepped up to captain the Matildas when playing in Kerr's absence, with Van Egmond regularly taking on the vice-captaincy over the past 15 months.
The Matildas' defender is expected to lead the side again against South Korea in Sydney on Friday and then in Newcastle on Monday.
While Kerr will not line up against the No 19-ranked South Korea over the coming week, the Matildas striker can eye a return in a pair of clashes with Argentina in late May and early June.
'It's amazing,' Van Egmond said of Kerr linking up with the Matildas squad in Sydney.
'Not only for herself but for the team. It's just been really nice to have her around us. [We'll] continue to support her with whatever she needs before she's back on the pitch.
'Obviously you guys know Sammy very well, she's a bubbly personality, she's our captain, it's really good to have her, and it's really nice to see her back in high spirits around the team.'

The Matildas are out to return to form against South Korea after a horror SheBelieves Cup campaign where they failed to win a match against Japan, USA and Colombia.
But they will have to do so without key midfielder Katrina Gorry after the 32-year-old was forced out of the two friendlies due to an ankle injury.
The Matildas are running out of time to build momentum under interim head coach Tom Sermanni with the start of the Asian Cup on home soil now under a year away.
'We've spoken as a team and it's not where we obviously want it to be,' Van Egmond said.
'But getting these games is really important and the goal is the Asian Cup. So now we've got a good opportunity on Friday night to go out and have a good performance and kind of start getting back to work.'

Cole Palmer set Club World Cup target as Chelsea star bids to go global
Cole Palmer didn't play on Chelsea's pre-season tour of the USA last summer, but his manager Enzo Maresca believes the Club World Cup is the perfect stage for him to show his talents Enzo Maresca believes Cole Palmer will prove that he belongs on the world 's biggest stage. The England star has been sensational for Chelsea since joining from Manchester City and was instrumental in Chelsea's UEFA Conference League success. Palmer provided two assists to turn the game around against Real Betis in the final – where he was named Man of the Match – to underline his quality as a game-changer on the biggest occasion. The likes of Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe are here at the Club World Cup in the United States. And Chelsea boss Maresca, who knows Palmer from their days working together at City's academy, believes that the forward is ready to step up and shine this summer. 'I've said it more than once: Cole Palmer is up there with the best players who can produce something at any moment, create something out of nothing,' said Maresca. 'He wasn't with me on the USA tour last summer, so it will also be a chance for him to experience the environment there and to introduce himself to North America.' Palmer is Chelsea's big hope and is also blossoming as a huge player for England after becoming a regular at Stamford Bridge in the past couple of seasons. Maresca has embraced Palmer's talent and the England star played a huge part in Chelsea finishing the season on a high. Chelsea won the Conference League while they also qualified for the Champions League next season, a statement of intent for the club. Maresca is looking forward to the Club World Cup as he believes it will be a big chance for Chelsea to show they belong with the best. Chelsea play their opening match in Group D against Los Angeles FC at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday evening. Maresca said: ' Football unites people and in this competition, considering that there are so many cultures involved, it will also unite many cultures. Football unites people in terms of both emotions and circumstances. 'I'm happy, especially because it's a tournament that brings together the top 32 teams in the world. It's exciting to take part in such a huge competition. And you also have the opportunity to face other top coaches and some world class teams. 'We were there – in North America – last summer, and it was great. There were so many fans there and it will be another opportunity for them to come and watch us and for us to meet them. It will be a great occasion. 'The fans in America were spectacular from the beginning. As far as culture is concerned, Brazilian fans usually create a great atmosphere, it's part of their culture. They are usually happy and incredibly entertaining. 'So with their football culture coming together with ours, hopefully we'll be able to ensure that the people who come to watch the game at the stadium have a great time.' But Maresca is also adamant that Chelsea are not going to make up the numbers – they believe they can win the trophy. After Monday, they face further fixtures in Group D with Flamengo and ES Tunis. Maresca added: 'When you are at Chelsea your goal is always to win. So, our goal – each and every game – will always be to try to win.'

Controversial FIFA Club World Cup begins - with newly knighted David Beckham joining fans at Hard Rock stadium
The new-look FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) has begun, kicking off with a goalless game between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Al Ahly. While many would have expected the Argentine legend to be named "man of the match", it was Miami's goalkeeper that took home the accolade - Oscar Ustari made eight saves, including one from the penalty spot. Messi almost won the match late on with a long-range effort, only for Al Ahly keeper Mohamed El Shenawy to turn his effort on to the bar. Also in attendance was the newly knighted David Beckham - or Sir David as he will soon be known. Before its revamp for the 2025 tournament, the Club World Cup took place every winter and was contested by the winners of continental club competitions around the world. It will now take place every four years. FIFA has faced criticism around the 32-team tournament, with some players raising concerns about the relentless fixture schedule. Europe has 12 clubs in the tournament, including Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester City. Their spaces were allocated based on performances in the Champions League over four seasons. Chelsea and City have already played 57 matches this season - now up to seven more have been added. It is why - in plans first revealed by Sky News in 2023 - global players' union FIFPRO has launched a legal challenge claiming FIFA has abused a dominant position to risk the health of players. A backdrop of unrest in America The CWC begins against the backdrop of immigration raids and violent protests in Los Angeles with concerns fans could be targeted or denied entry to FIFA events. It also the first time a major game has returned to the Hard Rock stadium in 11 months. The last match, the Copa America final saw ticketless fans breaching security gates and jumping over railings to enter the stadium, delaying kick off for 80 minutes.

Chelsea vs LAFC betting tips: Blues to get off to winning start in Club World Cup
Chelsea vs LAFC betting tips Chelsea face LAFC in Atlanta on Monday night in both clubs' opening match of the 2025 Club World Cup, with the Blues looking to build on a successful end to 2024/25. Enzo Maresca's side enter the new competition off the back of securing Champions League qualification and the Europa Conference League trophy, and the Italian will be looking forward to testing his side against some of the world's best this month. Chelsea aren't among the favourites for the competition – priced around 11/1 to win outright – but fans will be eager to see how they fare against a range of unusual opposition in the USA. And the first test comes against LAFC, the LA-based club that was only founded in 2014. The American side are currently in the middle of their own domestic season, sitting in fifth in the Western Conference, but are seen as heavy underdogs to get a result. Football betting sites are pricing Chelsea as 1/3 favourites, with LAFC offered at 17/2 and a draw priced as high as 15/4. Chelsea vs LAFC tips: Blues to earn straightforward win Despite a season that threatened to collapse at points late on, Chelsea rallied and put together some excellent form in the final few weeks as they secured fourth place in the Premier League and won the Conference League. The Blues have lost just once in their last 10 matches (2-0 away to Newcastle) but have conceded 10 goals in that time too, though several have been during big wins – such as the 4-1 wins over Real Betis and Djurgarden. LA have only lost one of their last 10 too, though they have managed five draws in those games and have conceded 16 times. But such is the gap between the two leagues that Chelsea obviously start as heavy favourites, with LA never having faced such a quality side in a competitive fixture in their entire history. While the timing of the match means it will likely be closer than otherwise anticipated, even a Chelsea side containing several second-string players should have more than enough to win and keep a clean sheet. And with that in mind, we're backing Chelsea to win to nil, which is offered at 13/10 with William Hill. Chelsea vs LAFC prediction 1: Chelsea to win to nil - 13/10 William Hill Chelsea vs LAFC prediction: Delap to net on debut As has been the case with several Premier League clubs, Chelsea have long been looking to add to their squad with a striker who will guarantee goals in the league. But unlike some of their rivals, the Blues have acted quickly and grabbed a potential bargain, with Liam Delap joining from Ipswich in a deal worth around £30m earlier this month. Delap scored 12 league goals for an Ipswich side who were eventually relegated last season, but he showed enough to impress some of the league's big clubs and was also a reported target for Manchester United and Newcastle. And having not played during the recent international break, the 22-year-old could make his debut for the club against LA. He'll be especially eager to impress during the tournament too, as he'll no doubt face competition for places with Nicolas Jackson, alongside another potential striker signing arriving later in the summer. And we're backing the youngster to make a good impression on his debut, with various betting sites offering odds of 6/5 on Delap to score anytime. Responsible gambling If you're having a bet on the Club World Cup, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. When using gambling sites be aware that sports betting can be addictive.
