Van Egmond goal in vain as Birmingham City's WSL dream crumbles in 2-2 draw with Lionesses
Matildas great Emily van Egmond's ambition of returning to England's Women's Super League (WSL) has been shattered despite her scoring for Birmingham City in a dramatic season finale against London City Lionesses. Van Egmond, who had previously played in the WSL with West Ham, and her Blues teammates were hoping to gain promotion from the Women's Championship. But any other result at Birmingham's St Andrew's Stadium would result in the title going to the Lionesses. The Lionesses held on for a 2-2 draw, doing enough to repel the Blues, who had trailed 2-0. Loading Twitter content Inspired by van Egmond's headed goal from close range in the 63rd minute, the hosts thrilled the crowd of 8,749 when Cho So-Hyun equalised with a brilliant volley in the shadows of full-time. But they could not find a winner, meaning the Lionesses finished on top of the Women's Championship standings with 43 points, two ahead of the Blues. The Lionesses will become the first wholly independent club in the WSL next season. In the WSL, Manchester United sealed a top-three finish, getting the point they needed to qualify for the Women's Champions League in a 2-2 draw with local rivals Manchester City, who were without injured Matildas star Mary Fowler. There was still no sign of Sam Kerr returning after her own longstanding ACL injury, as champions Chelsea beat Spurs 1-0. Chelsea is just one match away — against Liverpool — from completing the entire WSL season undefeated. Clare Wheeler celebrated her new two-year contract with Everton by enjoying a 2-0 victory over Merseyside rivals Liverpool at Anfield. AAP

Matildas veteran backs Sam Kerr to resume as captain on return to playing
Matildas vice-captain Emily van Egmond has thrown her support behind Sam Kerr to continue as captain when the star striker is ready to resume playing with the national side. Kerr has joined a Matildas camp for the first time since injuring her knee in training with club side Chelsea more than a year ago, ahead of a pair of friendlies on home soil against South Korea. Football Australia cleared the way for the 31-year-old to take back the captain's armband by deciding not to sanction the striker for a late-night incident in the UK during which she verbally abused a police officer. Kerr on Monday expressed 'sincere regret' for the events that followed a night out in London in early 2023 and led to a criminal trial where she was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment in February. Van Egmond said that Kerr 'definitely should not be stepping down' as Matildas captain once she is ready to play again. 'The federation have come out and said what they need to say,' Van Egmond added. 'Obviously Sammy's had her side to say as well, and as teammates and a team, we're in full support of her, and we're just looking forward to the game now on Friday.' Steph Catley has stepped up to captain the Matildas when playing in Kerr's absence, with Van Egmond regularly taking on the vice-captaincy over the past 15 months. The Matildas' defender is expected to lead the side again against South Korea in Sydney on Friday and then in Newcastle on Monday. While Kerr will not line up against the No 19-ranked South Korea over the coming week, the Matildas striker can eye a return in a pair of clashes with Argentina in late May and early June. 'It's amazing,' Van Egmond said of Kerr linking up with the Matildas squad in Sydney. 'Not only for herself but for the team. It's just been really nice to have her around us. [We'll] continue to support her with whatever she needs before she's back on the pitch. 'Obviously you guys know Sammy very well, she's a bubbly personality, she's our captain, it's really good to have her, and it's really nice to see her back in high spirits around the team.' But they will have to do so without key midfielder Katrina Gorry after the 32-year-old was forced out of the two friendlies due to an ankle injury. The Matildas are running out of time to build momentum under interim head coach Tom Sermanni with the start of the Asian Cup on home soil now under a year away. 'We've spoken as a team and it's not where we obviously want it to be,' Van Egmond said. 'But getting these games is really important and the goal is the Asian Cup. So now we've got a good opportunity on Friday night to go out and have a good performance and kind of start getting back to work.'

Australia players back Kerr to continue as captain
MELBOURNE, April 1 (Reuters) - Sam Kerr is welcome back in the Australia camp and has her teammates' support to resume the captaincy when fit to play, according to midfielder Emily van Egmond. Kerr was found not guilty of racially abusing a British police officer in February, two years after calling him "stupid and white" following a drunken dispute with a taxi driver. While Football Australia said on Monday it would take no action against Kerr, some soccer pundits and fans have questioned whether she should continue to lead the Matildas. Australia vice-captain Van Egmond was adamant there was no debate among the players. "She definitely should not be stepping down," the 31-year-old told Australia media in Sydney on Tuesday. "The federation have come out and said what they need to say and obviously Sammy's had her side to say as well. As teammates and a team, we're in full support of her." Kerr has not played in more than 15 months as she continues her recovery from an ACL injury suffered in training for her London club Chelsea. The 31-year-old striker has not commented publicly on the captaincy issue and Football Australia have shielded her from media duties since she joined a Matildas training camp in Sydney ahead of a pair of friendlies against South Korea. Australia's most prolific goal-scorer has been ruled out of the Korean matches but will continue her recovery with the team as agreed with Chelsea. Van Egmond said it was "amazing" to have Kerr back in camp. "Not only for herself but for the team. It's just been really nice to have her around us and (we'll) continue to support her with whatever she needs before she's back on the pitch."
