Twins bring Royce Lewis back from injured list to start series vs. Marlins
Lewis joined the Twins for the start of a three-game series at Miami. He hurt his left hamstring while running out a grounder in the ninth inning of a game on June 13, a less severe strain than the one he suffered late in spring training. That injury sidelined him for seven weeks, costing him the first 35 games of the season.
Lewis went 0 for 8 with one walk on a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul.
Lewis has played in only 182 regular-season games since making his major league debut in 2022, and this year has been the first time the interruption seems to have affected his production. Lewis is batting just .202 with a .585 OPS and two home runs in 30 games this season. He had 32 straight hitless at-bats from May 19 to June 3.
Right before his latest setback, though, he had just gotten in a rhythm by going 9 for 20 with a home run and four RBIs in his last six games. The Twins are 18-12 in games Lewis has played in this season, despite his struggle at the plate, and 22-32 without him.
The first overall pick in the 2017 draft was limited to 82 games last season by a severe quadriceps strain he suffered running the bases in the opener and later by a groin injury. The previous two years for Lewis were limited by recoveries from successive ACL surgeries.

Zakai Zeigler drops bid to play 5th college season, but his lawsuit against NCAA will continue
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee has dropped his bid for a federal judge to let him play a fifth season of Division I basketball in five years, but his lawsuit against the NCAA will continue, his attorneys said Tuesday. Last month, a judge denied Zeigler's request for a preliminary injunction that would allow him to return to the Volunteers. He appealed that ruling, but his attorneys voluntarily withdrew the appeal on Tuesday. 'While we had hoped to see Zakai back in orange and white, he's embracing the next chapter of his basketball career with optimism and resolve,' the law firm Litson PLLC said in a statement. 'We remain committed to pressing his case forward in the trial court, where the core legal issues remain very much alive.' The 5-foot-9 Zeigler was not selected in last week's NBA draft, but ESPN reported that the Detroit Pistons have signed him to their Summer League squad. Zeigler is one of several athletes suing the NCAA over its eligibility rules, arguing the ban on playing more than four seasons in a five-year window is a monopolistic practice that deprives athletes of the opportunity to earn name, image and likeness compensation. He argued in his lawsuit that he could earn between $2 million and as much as $4 million if he played another season at Tennessee. ___

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — There was no flirting with perfection this time for Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom against the Orioles. Just another impressive start for the two-time Cy Young Award winner in his comeback from elbow surgery. DeGrom struck out six on Tuesday night and limited the Orioles to two runs over six innings, on a homer by Gary Sánchez that just cleared the wall. The 37-year-old right-hander departed with a 7-2 lead, six days after he was perfect through six innings and took a no-hitter into the eighth in Baltimore. It was the 17th start this season for deGrom, and the 14th in a row he worked at least five innings while also allowing two runs or fewer. That extended his franchise record, and is the longest streak in the majors this season. Baltimore had a runner early this time, when Ryan O'Hearn drew a leadoff walk in the second inning. Cedric Mullins led off the third with a bunt single, though he was then thrown out trying to steal second base. Sanchez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the fourth. The 381-foot shot barely got over the wall in left, and came one pitch after his foul pop that dropped just beyond the extended reach of first baseman Josh Smith into the Rangers dugout. After missing most of his first two seasons with the Rangers because of his second Tommy John surgery, deGrom has thrown 101 1/3 innings this year, his first time over 100 in a season since he threw 204 in 2019 — when he won his second consecutive National League Cy Young while with the New York Mets. He threw only 41 innings combined in nine starts the past two seasons after signing his $185 million, five-year contract with Texas in free agency. Texas won all six starts deGrom made in his Texas debut before the end of April in 2023 before surgery, then he rehabbed most of last year before a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings in three September starts. DeGrom made 12 starts during the COVID-19-shortened 60-game season in 2020, and had career-low 1.08 ERA over 92 innings in 2021 before missing the final three months with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow. ___
