Russell Crowe reflects on 2005 phone-throwing incident after nearly two decades of silence
Russell Crowe has spoken publicly for the first time in nearly 20 years about the infamous phone-throwing incident that led to his arrest in New York in 2005. The Oscar-winning actor, now 61, expressed regret over the episode in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, saying he has grown from the experience and now values the lessons it taught him. The incident occurred in June 2005 at the Mercer Hotel in Manhattan, where Crowe was staying while promoting his film Cinderella Man. After being unable to make a long-distance call to his then-wife, Danielle Spencer, in Australia, Crowe lost his temper and threw a telephone at a front desk employee, Nestor Estrada. He was arrested and led from the hotel in handcuffs, spending six hours in police custody. Crowe initially faced felony charges but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of third-degree assault. He avoided jail time but paid a reported $100,000 to settle a civil lawsuit filed by Estrada. At the time, Crowe admitted he struggled with anger management and described feeling 'at the bottom of a well.' Now, Crowe has reflected on the experience through both words and music. In the video for his new single Save Me, with his band The Gentlemen Barbers, he alludes to the incident. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, he said, 'At 61, I can forgive my bad days. I absolutely respect regret. Regret is one of the greatest processes.' Crowe added that he has become 'smarter' over the years and more honest with himself. He shared a tongue-in-cheek reference to his time in custody: 'Sometimes you're singing Irish folk songs to the prison officer who is looking after you in jail.' The actor was married to Danielle Spencer from 2003 until their separation in 2012. They finalized their divorce in 2018 and share two sons, Charlie and Tennyson.

Sydney Sweeney shares Florida night out photos as American Eagle ad backlash continues
Sydney Sweeney has shared photos of a night out with friends in Florida, posting images on Instagram while remaining silent over criticism of her recent American Eagle advert. The Euphoria and White Lotus actress uploaded pictures captioned 'Duval diaries,' where she appeared in blue denim jeans, a white crop top, and trainers. The 27-year-old was seen holding a tray of shots with friends and later performing karaoke with a microphone in hand. The outing comes weeks after Sweeney appeared in American Eagle's 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' campaign. The advert, which played on the words 'jeans' and 'genes,' drew criticism from some viewers who argued the phrasing referenced eugenics and white supremacist rhetoric. A report from Salon noted that the term 'great genes' has historically been used in contexts celebrating whiteness, thinness, and attractiveness, describing the campaign as a 'tone-deaf marketing move.' While Sweeney has not publicly addressed the backlash, American Eagle released a statement clarifying the intent behind the advert. ''Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,' the company said, adding, 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.' Following the advert's release, Sweeney appeared to take a brief pause from Instagram before returning to promote her upcoming film, Americana. In a recent post, she wrote: 'A few years ago, I filmed this little movie with some friends, and now you get to meet Penny Jo,' referring to her character in the project. Crisis PR expert Eric Schiffer told the Daily Mail that Sweeney's silence could carry risks, warning that avoiding a response 'will be seen as a brutal insult to many shoppers on the left.' Despite the controversy, Sweeney continues to balance her promotional work with personal updates on social media.

Sydney Sweeney's 'Americana' struggles at box office after American Eagle ad backlash
Sydney Sweeney is experiencing a career setback as her latest film Americana opens weakly at the US box office. The crime drama, directed by Tony Tost, earned just $850,000 across 1,100 theatres during its debut weekend, placing 16th overall despite early festival attention. The film, which premiered at South by Southwest in 2023, stars Sweeney alongside Paul Walter Hauser and Halsey. It tells the story of a group of outsiders whose lives collide after a rare Lakota Ghost Shirt surfaces on the black market in South Dakota. Reviews have been mixed, and the film currently holds a 68 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In the lead-up to the release, Sweeney promoted the project on social media, introducing her character Penny Jo, a would-be country singer. However, her efforts were overshadowed by fallout from her American Eagle campaign, which used the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans/Genes.' Critics described the play on words as resembling Nazi propaganda, sparking heated online debate. Sweeney has also faced scrutiny over her political affiliation after registering as a Republican in Florida prior to the 2024 Presidential election. Some critics accused her of aligning with controversial figures, while fans defended her as someone unafraid to challenge cultural expectations. Despite Americana's slow start, Sweeney has two high-profile projects on the horizon. Christy, a biopic about boxer Christy Martin, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, while The Housemaid, a psychological thriller, is slated for a Christmas Day release.
