Ruth Jones TV return confirmed after Gavin and Stacey with 'irresistible' period
Ruth Jones has confirmed her next TV role after breaking records with the final ever Gavin and Stacey episode last Christmas.
The 58-year-old teamed back up with James Corden to pen a festive special, which became the UK's most-watched scripted show since records began in 2002.
Fresh from that ratings bonanza, Jones is set to return to the small screen in a wildly different role, amid news of her separation from her husband TV producer David Peet.
Jones has now signed on to the upcoming adaptation of a Pride and Prejudice spin-off novel for the BBC, where she will play the Bennet matriarch alongside Richard E Grant as Mr Bennet.
Over 10 episodes, The Other Bennet Sister will delve into what became of Mary Bennet, played by Call the Midwife's Ella Bruccoleri, the bookish sister who has been rendered as an uptight grump in most Jane Austen adaptations.
Based on Janice Hadlow's novel of the same name, filming for the show is currently underway in Wales.
The BBC synopsis of the show reads: 'The Gardiners take Mary under their wing as governess to their three children – Marianne, George, and Rebecca – introducing her to an exciting new social world that includes Mr Hayward, Mr Ryder, and Ann Baxter.'
Game of Thrones star Indira Varma has already been spotted filming scenes as Mary's aunt Mrs Gardiner, alongside Richard Coyle who will play her husband.
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt promised the show will be an 'irresistible treat' when it arrives on the BBC and iPlayer next year.
'It's a joy to see cameras rolling on our vibrant, witty and clever new take on Jane Austen's beloved world, said Salt in a statement.
Executive producer Jane Tranter, who spearheaded the Doctor Who modern reboot at production studio Bad Wolf, said they have been working on The Other Bennet Sister behind the scenes for many years. More Trending
Tranter said in a statement: 'Our actors had a lot to live up to – and I can honestly say that this is the ensemble cast of our dreams.
'Each one brings something new and exciting to the world of Austen. And all of us at Bad Wolf are delighted to be making a drama that brings such joy.'

'It's been sitting in a box in storage for years and I thought rather then make a new one I'd give it a new lease of life and rework it, after finding this lovely yellow dress. 'Bringing a bit of sunshine to Royal Ascot, if we needed any more.' The royal family were out in force for a third day of racing, with the Princess Royal and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, joined by Anne's daughter Zara Tindall and her husband, former England rugby star Mike Tindall, in the royal box. The King's nephew and Anne's son Peter Phillips and his partner, NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, were spotted in the parade ring greeting the King and Queen after their carriage procession arrival. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were also among the royal party with Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Beatrice appeared to celebrate a win soon after they arrived when Merchant won the second race of the day, the King George V Stakes. Ms Keiser, whose hat featured dyed swan feathers, said: 'It's my first time here it's just an extraordinary experience. All these hats are just amazing and the spirit of the people, everyone is dressed up. We're also very excited to see the racing and the King.' Royal Ascot stalwart Tracy Rose wore a dress and towering hat she made inspired by Georgian fashion to mark the 250th birthday of author Jane Austen. She said: 'This is a contemporary homage to the bonnet, the dress also owes something to the bonnet which could be a first and I began designing everything at the start of the year.' In 2022 Mrs Rose founded the Racing For All Diversity Campaign to encourage people of all backgrounds to enjoy a day at the races. Speaking about the appeal of Royal Ascot she said: 'It's so British, it's such a party atmosphere and everybody just wants to be outstanding and have fun with their fashion, which I just love. I'm loving everybody looking wonderful.'

EastEnders new boss, Executive Producer Ben Wadey added: 'Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wish-list of returnees as, although we haven't seen her on screen for twenty years, her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines.' Speaking on her return to the BBC soap, Michelle said: 'It feels like coming home. 'After doing my first few scenes, it was like I'd never been away. 'It all happened at the right time. EastEnders drops huge clue that Zoe Slater has a secret child before shock exit 'I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character. 'It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back. 'When I was pitched the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision.'
