Sedibeng mayor facing suspension found unharmed after alleged hijacking and kidnapping
Sedibeng mayor Lerato Maloka and her driver were found unharmed after they were allegedly hijacked and kidnapped from Alberton on the East Rand on Friday.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said the owner of a house Maloka and her driver were leaving from reported the hijacking.
'Preliminary reports suggest the owner of the house reported the matter to an individual who then informed the mayor's husband. The husband went to report the matter at Dawn Park police station.'
A broadcast was issued for her vehicle.
'The vehicle was recovered at about midnight in Dawn Park by Katlehong police. A few hours later at about 2am, the mayor and the driver were found unharmed and reunited with their families.'
Muridili said statements would be taken from the victims and police were looking for the suspects.
The incident comes as Maloka faced a disciplinary investigation into alleged misconduct this week.
DA Sedibeng caucus leader Cllr Sibusiso Dyonase said in a statement on Thursday the council had resolved to write to Gauteng MEC for co-operative governance and traditional affairs Jacob Mamabolo calling for Maloka's immediate suspension.
'Maloka has long been a problematic figure, today's resolution centres around her and other municipal officials' misdeeds in wasting more than R500,000 on a trip to Germany. Prominently, her role in the destruction of the mayoral vehicle featured as part of today's proceedings. Sugar was found in the engine of the car after the council forced her to use the R490,000 vehicle.'
Dyonase said Maloka had called for a full investigation into maladministration in her administration while claiming she was the target of a smear campaign.

Taung man gets 12 years for blowing up sewerage infrastructure
An act of sabotage that blew up a vital sewerage transformer — and left the perpetrator injured — has landed a 23-year-old man from Taung behind bars for 12 years. On Thursday, 29 May, the Taung Regional Court sentenced 23-year-old Karabo Mocumi of Dithakwaneng Village to 12 years' direct imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to damaging essential infrastructure. Cost of sabotage Mocumi's ill-advised decision to cut a copper cable connected to a sewerage transformer on 06 April 2024 in Reivilo, near Taung, backfired spectacularly when the transformer exploded, injuring him and disrupting vital community services. According to the NPA, residents who rushed to the scene found Mocumi still at the wreckage scene. Emergency services were called and the injured saboteur was taken to hospital before being arrested and released on R500 bail. In court, Mocumi pleaded guilty. State prosecutor Rebaona Mokgopa argued that crimes such as these weren't just reckless; they were rampant and fuelled South Africa's infamous energy crisis — load shedding — which had wreaked havoc on service delivery and the economy. Magistrate Bhuti Zulu echoed the sentiments, stressing the heavy toll such offences took on communities and the need for sentences that packed a punch. Welcoming the verdict, Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, praised everyone involved in securing the conviction. 'This sentence underscores the NPA's commitment to fighting crime and upholding the rule of law. It sends a clear message: tampering with essential infrastructure will not be tolerated,' she said. The NPA confirmed that while it did not maintain official records on such cases, this was only the second it was aware of to come before a court this year, though the true number of incidents was likely to be higher. Fezile Ngubane breaks his silence after his name was cleared in Olorato Mongale murder
KWAZULU-NATAL - Fezile Ngubane says that he is relieved to have his name cleared. He was one of three accused sought for the murder of Olorato Mongale. Ngubane, who is on drugs and hasn't been out of Durban in years, says he was scared for his life after he heard he was a wanted suspect. His father and siblings went looking for him to take him to the police to clear his name. 'I have a problem with drugs, but I am not a violent person, I have never lifted my hand on any woman,' he said. Ngubane's father concurred, saying that as soon as police came to his home to look for his son, he knew that violence is not his son's modus operandi. A man who is almost in his 40s is a father to a 17-year-old and makes his money through washing cars. He sold his identity card to Philangenkosi Makhanya for R500 to buy drugs. Ngubane, who is older than Makhanya, has known the now-deceased Makhanya for a very long time as they grew up in the same area. He has sold his ID to Makhanya a few times, with no knowledge of what is done with his identity. Police discovered that Ngubane's ID was used to RICA SIM cards to lure victims. Makhanya was killed in an Amanzimtoti apartment after exchanging gunfire with police on Friday. The white VW Polo seen picking up Mongale for a supposed date was found in Makhanya's father's panelbeating shop. His father and mother were arrested, with the latter arrested after it was alleged that she tipped her son off about the police presence in their home. Several IDs, including Ngubane's ID, were found to have been in Makhanya's possession.' Ngubane's father has offered his condolences to Mongale's family and says he is grateful that both families were able to talk to each other to clear the air.
