2025 BAFTA Games Awards Winners: ‘Astro Bot' Wins Deserved GOTY

Forbes08-04-2025

'Astro Bot' took home five BAFTA Games Awards, including Best Game.
Astro Bot dominated the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards, claiming Game of The Year along with four more gongs for Audio Achievement, Family, Animation, and Game Design. Anyone who's played Astro Bot will be in no way surprised, despite strong competition, in another typically BAFTA affair with surprises along the way.
Last year, Baldur's Gate 3 unsurprisingly led both the nominations (11) and awards won (4); in 2025, the top nominee was a bit more of a shock, as local favorite Senua's Saga: Hellblade II was the frontrunner (also with 11), albeit missing out on the all-important Game of the Year shortlisting. In the end, Hellblade II took home just one BAFTA for Technical Achievement.
Still Wakes the Deep came second with three BAFTAs — New Intellectual Property, and both Performers in Supporting and Leading Roles — a particular high point being Karen Dunbar, the actor behind Finlay who was, delightfully, the most Scottish person on the internet tonight, saying 'I'm not even an actor, I'm a gynecologist!'
Even with six nominations, Black Myth: Wukong got nothing. Thank Goodness You're Here!, the hometown fave, grabbed just one award from seven, even though it felt like a contender in every one of its categories. It's worth noting just how much that sole trophy meant to its developers at Coal Supper; they're an incredible bunch, and they deserve every success in the future.
Will Todd and James Carbutt rightfully received a BAFTA for 'Thank Goodness You're Here!'.

Sadly, Balatro didn't get its dues; if it was going to win Game of the Year anywhere, it was the BAFTAs. Just look at Vampire Survivors, which beat God of War Ragnarök to the top gong in 2023, but also fairly picked up tonight's award for Evolving Game. After the first award Balatro was nominated for — New Intellectual Property — went to Still Wakes the Deep, winning dev The Chinese Room admitted they thought Balatro had it in the bag.
Despite all this, Balatro had the biggest laugh of the night when the poker-based roguelike (and my own GOTY) collected its sole award for Debut Game. Ben Starr, who's played the part of Jimbo the Joker on behalf of the famously public-averse solo dev LocalThunk, read the funniest speech of the night, saying how 'he has shoes made of gold and he thanks you for making him that way.'
Most importantly, he ended the speech saying: 'Oh, and play more independent games like Animal Well, they are the lifeblood of this industry and they deserve your respect.'
The BAFTA Games Awards was hosted for the second year in a row by comedian Phil Wang, who compared himself to the Nintendo Switch 2 — 'not noticeably better, but I did charge a lot more this time' — but only after the ceremony opened with the year's industry highlights powered by the (literally) golden guitar skills of Pendulum star Peredur ap Gwynedd, who played a selection of the band's hits that featured in video games.
Other highlights included Tales of Kenzera: Zau winning Game Beyond Entertainment, even though Surgent Studios faced major and heartbreaking circumstances after the title's launch; nerd-turned-hunk Matthew Lewis, A.K.A. Neville Longbottom, rocking up to present the BAFTA for Game Design; and deserving BAFTA Fellowship Award-winning Yoko Shimomura's translator, who I hope was being paid by the hour.
Plenty of other smaller titles deservedly got their moments in the sun: Tiny Glade, The Plucky Squire, Little Kitty, Big City, Botany Manor, Paper Trail, A Highland Song, and Pacific Drive. Even triple-As were rightly lauded; the clip packages for both Astro Bot and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 only reminded everyone of how varied and brilliant both games were.
There were a couple of other nice surprises, namely Metaphor: ReFantazio claiming the Narrative award in the face of big local competition, and Neva's much-deserved win for Artistic Achievement.
Five awards: Astro BotThree: Still Wakes the DeepTwo: Helldivers 2One: Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, Thank Goodness You're Here!, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Vampire Survivors, Neva, Balatro

Zendaya & Tom Holland Are Putting Wedding on Hold For a Big Reason, Says ‘Source'

Zendaya and Tom Holland are surely looking forward to their wedding. However, it seems like they won't be able to hold their ceremony anytime soon. With the couple having several projects in the pipeline, it is hard for them to find time to plan their nuptials. Moreover, while Holland is ready to elope immediately, his girlfriend reportedly wants a big ceremony with their loved ones present to celebrate their love. A source recently told RadarOnline that Zendaya and Tom Holland are having to postpone their wedding due to their busy schedules. While the couple is very much in love, it seems like they will have to be patient before they can say 'I do.' The actors have several movies and television series in the works. In addition, Holland has his non-alcoholic beer brand BERO to consider as well. The insider revealed that the BAFTA Award winner is more than willing to elope with his girlfriend immediately. However, the fashion icon has 'a vision of a wedding,' which involves their loved ones and a proper celebration. The source told the outlet, 'If Tom could jet away with Zendaya and marry her in some exotic locale, he would.' The pair allegedly did try their best to 'fit' the wedding into their schedules this year. However, it just was not possible as they both have several projects on hand at the moment. The insider also highlighted that the couple's career-first mindset doesn't help, calling it 'one of the big challenges' they face. The duo supposedly lets their personal lives take a backseat when they have work. The source further explained, 'Trying to line up schedules can be brutal – it's one of the things that gets in the way for a lot of high-profile Hollywood relationships.' Tom Holland and Zendaya are also not happy about the postponement of their wedding, with both feeling frustrated about the delay. Furthermore, the couple has apparently 'hit a point where the distance and constant travel are really wearing them down.' Even when one of them is in the same place as the other, their partner is 'usually working insane hours.' Originally reported by Namrata Padhee on Reality Tea. 3 new Game Pass games to play this weekend (May 30-June 1)

The month of May isn't ending quietly. Elden Ring: Nightreign is sneaking in right at the buzzer to give souls fans a new way to engage with that hit formula in a co-op setting. Of course, we understand that style of game isn't for everyone and that leaves a bit of an awkward gap before the next upcoming Xbox game. As impressive as the first wave of Game Pass games was, the second is arguably better. Not only are we treated to one of the best games of 2024, but two day one additions. This is the perfect weekend to get a little weird and try out some unique games that might only be possible thanks to Game Pass. Let's kick off the summer on the right foot with my personal recommendations for what you should be playing this weekend. Metaphor: ReFantazio 2024 was an incredibly competitive year for awards. Astro Bot and Balatro took home tons of well-earned trophies, but it would be a crime to ignore just how good Metaphor: Refantazio is. It is clear as day this is coming from the Persona team just based on the core combat system, music, and incredible UI work, but evolves the formula in some meaningful ways. There's a light bit of real-time combat you can use here, but the flexibility in the Archetype system begs you to break the entire thing wide open. If you enjoyed crafting overpowered builds in Clair Obscur, this game will scratch that same itch. Wrap the entire thing up in an incredibly relevant and heartfelt story and this is easily one of the best JRPGs to come out in the last decade. Recommended Videos Metaphor: Refantazio is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. To a T If you like the oddball style of the Katamari games, To a T is the next project from Keita Takahashi. This time the game is a narrative adventure centering around a young boy who is stuck in a T-pose; a term used in 3D modeling for a character's default stance is standing straight up with both arms outstretched in a T stance. Described as a coming-of-age story, you will go through daily tasks to experience the difficulty of doing simple things like brushing your teeth when locked in that pose. Your dog will be your main companion and help you as you go through life in a small town. It sounds absurd, and likely is to a degree, but it has a lot of heart and a great message about living with a disability. To a T is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Spray Paint Simulator Look, we get it, it feels like there's a simulation game for everything at this point. We can't say all of them are winners, but Spray Paint Simulator has captured my attention as a great melding of the zen-like qualities of Powerwash Simulator but with more creative freedom. Again, the premise is in the title here; you're entering levels to spray paint them to restore various locations and objects. The range of missions is great, from normal things like homes to giant robots. You will unlock more tools as you go and build up your business, but can also just jump into the Free Spray mode if you just feel like letting your creativity fly without any restraints. Spray Paint Simulator is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.

‘CODA' Director Sian Heder's ‘Being Heumann' Lands Ruth Madeley as Lead

Ruth Madeley will play disability rights activist Judy Heumann in the Apple movie Being Heumann from CODA director Sian Heder. The BAFTA-nominated actress will play Heumann as she leads over a hundred disabled people to take over the San Francisco Federal Building, kicking off a 28-day sit-in. The protest led to the enforcement of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which required all federal spaces to become accessible. Heumann, known as 'the mother of the disability rights movement,' was a central architect of the Americans with Disabilities Act. She died in 2023 at the age of 75. Heder will also produce under her overall deal with Apple, along with David Permut and Kevin Walsh for The Walsh Company via that banner's overall deal with the studio. Heumann's managers John W. Beach and Kevin Cleary of Gravity Squared Entertainment will also serve as producers. Executive producers include a posthumous credit for Heumann, Being Heumann co-author Kristen Joiner and Diana Pokorny. 'What an unbelievable honor to play The Mother of disability rights, an icon and powerhouse to the disabled community. Judy has always been a source of inspiration for me personally, and I am so excited to share her story with the world,' said Madeley, who was born with spina bifida. Her credits include U.K. series Dr. Who and Years and Years. Madeley is repped by Curtis Brown and Tapestry London.
