Bihar: Gaya residents get eye treatment, free of cost under Ayushman Bharat Yojana
Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Eye Hospital, inaugurated five years ago in 2020, has become a landmark location in Bihar's Gaya, owing to its famed eye care centre catering to more than 10 lakh people, not just from the city but also adjoining towns including Nawada, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, and Nalanda. The hospital, situated at Kajha village of Wazirganj block of Gaya, is primarily an eye hospital, providing treatment for all types of eye diseases. The hospital has a modular Operation Theatre, two other OTs, 100 indoor patient beds and is equipped with a pathological lab, a spectacle and medicine shop, world-class diagnostic equipment, and a team of trained eye surgeons and paramedical staff. The hospital is again in the spotlight over providing free eye surgery to thousands of patients under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). About 40 per cent of the patients in the hospital are Ayushman cardholders and hence have access to medicines as well as surgeries free of cost under the yojana. Many Ayushman Bharat scheme beneficiaries shared their story with IANS and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching such a scheme. Balinder Singh of Bhedia village in Manpur block said: "I was treated under the Ayushman card. I got timely treatment, food and all facilities. If this card was not there, my treatment would not have been possible." 'In our family, my wife has this card. There is a younger boy, he will also get it made. I thank the central government for this scheme," he added. A woman named Malti Devi, who got her eyes treated at the hospital, said: "My card has been made. The eye operation has been done without any money spent. I want to thank the Modi government. With the help of the Central government, my eyes have been treated." She further stated: "This government is taking special care of the poor. Ayushman cards are being made in rural areas. This initiative is spreading awareness, also. People get to know from one person to another that eye treatment is being done in the hospital. This makes people aware, and they also get themselves treated. If this card had not been there, my eyes would not have been treated. This has been possible because of the Central government, and I want to thank PM Modi for this." Notably, the hospital provided eye care services to 26,240 OPD patients and performed cataract surgery on hundreds of patients through 637 rural eye camps last year. In view of its quality of services and social impact, it was also awarded a certificate of appreciation in 2022 and 2023.

Bihar tops the nation in digital healthcare, with over 90 per cent health facilities almost paperless
Patna, June 8 (UNI) With 92 per cent of health facilities almost going paperless, Bihar has emerged as the national frontrunner in digital transformation in healthcare, achieving the number one rank in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) implementation. The state is setting new benchmarks in accessible and efficient public health delivery, with a remarkable 92 per cent online OPD registration rate at government health facilities and the highest number of QR code scans for patient check-ins CEO of Bihar Swasthya Suraksha Samiti, Shashank Shekhar Sinha, highlighted the state's achievements and said that the state not only leads in QR code scans for OPD registration but also tops the country in the number of Electronic Health Records (e-prescriptions) generated. He further noted that Bihar has received the highest incentives under the Central Government's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS), which are being reinvested to strengthen the state's digital health infrastructure. State Health Committee Administrative Officer Rajesh Kumar said that the state's BHAVYA (Bihar Health Applications Visionary Yojana for All) model, aligned with ABDM, has redefined healthcare accessibility and monitoring across the state. According to Kumar, paperless health facilities under digital healthcare were possible following the 'Scan and Share' initiative under ABDM, which allows patients to scan a QR code at the entry of a health facility and directly proceed to a consultation without the hassle of long queues or paperwork. This simple yet revolutionary step, along with widespread adoption of ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), has dramatically reduced patient turnaround time in government hospitals, from over an hour earlier to an average of just 45 minutes now, covering consultation to medicine disbursal. Kumar further said that Bihar's state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre, a technological nerve centre in the state capital, monitors real-time feeds from all district hospitals and health facilities across the state. It ensures prompt alerts, compliance monitoring, and smooth operations at all levels. This setup is further backed by District Command Centres and Data Analytics Units, allowing proactive identification and management of potential health emergencies by tracking disease trends and patient data in real time. Meanwhile, a nine-member delegation recently visited Bihar on a three-day tour of the state to understand the scale and impact of this digital leap. During interaction with patients at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Silao in Nalanda district, the patients lauded the convenience and efficiency of the new digital process, describing it as a complete overhaul of the previous cumbersome system. Bengal reports 58 active Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours; 10-month-old child in ICU
On Saturday, West Bengal recorded 58 more Covid-19 cases, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 622. With this, the state became the fourth-highest Covid-positive state in the country, only after Kerala, Gujarat, and Delhi. According to the health department, a two-year-old child and a 10-month-old toddler have been admitted to a private hospital, off EM Bypass. Sources said the baby with breathing issues is in the ICU in the pediatric ward of the hospital with breathing issues. Covid-testing counters have also been opened at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Sources in the health department stated that a report has been sent to the Central health department informing the steps taken by the state, the current figures of hospital admissions and the condition of patients. The number of active cases in Kolkata city has seen a sharp rise by the end of May, as per records. At the beginning of May, the city had only one positive case. There has also been one death in the state due to Covid. Meanwhile, a war of wards has broken out after Leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikari on Friday accused the state government of hiding the actual Covid patients in the state. 'The way dengue data is being withheld, the Covid situation is also being obscured. This is a clear attempt to hide the truth from the people. This is not merely an administrative lapse; it reflects a serious disregard for the health and safety of ordinary citizens,' he said. However, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya refuted Adhikari's allegation. Bhattacharya said that the health sector is a state government issue. 'We are not interested in what someone is saying The Centre is aware of what we are doing. A meeting was held a few days ago by the Central Government which I had attended. Several issues were discussed. The Opposition leader may not know this. The Centre heaped praise after listening to what steps the Mamata Banerjee government has taken to check various diseases.' Though the state health department is yet to issue a health advisory, the Kolkata Corporation has decided to raise awareness on precautionary measures. According to sources, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be putting up banners in all its health units across the city urging people to wash their hands, wear masks, and maintain social distancing. The health workers in all wards have been directed to collect information regarding Covid symptoms, besides usual exercise of data collection of malaria or dengue. They have been advised to isolate any person if found with influenza-like symptoms or severe acute respiratory symptoms (SARI). With the rising cases, the health department said two isolation wards have been kept ready at ID Hospital in case the number spikes.
