
Hong Kong must become global supply chain hub to navigate US trade war: experts
Hong Kong must transform itself from a transshipment port into a global supply chain services hub to navigate a raging US-China trade war while leveraging its position as an international shipping and trading centre, industry leaders have said.
Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, honorary president of the Hong Kong Chinese Importers' and Exporters' Association, said on Thursday that the transition from being a re-exporting hub was crucial for the city amid challenges of growing trade protectionism worldwide and US tariff shock on small parcels.
'In the past, Hong Kong's trade was relatively simple. Our role as a 'superconnector' meant business was like buying with the left hand and being able to resell with the right. But now, the global supply chain is being reshaped,' Wong told a radio programme.

'Certain raw materials originate in one country or region, while a part of the manufacturing takes place in another country, and finally, the product goes for packaging and then transport to yet another location. Hong Kong needs to provide some high-quality services along the links of the supply chain.'
Earlier this week, the association released a study report on how Hong Kong could elevate its position from 'intermediary' to 'supply chain manager' by integrating advantages in professional services such as finance, law and insurance to provide comprehensive trade support throughout the entire cycle.
The suggestions are in line with the budget blueprint by Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po in February, in which mainland Chinese companies are encouraged to establish a presence in Hong Kong by setting up international or regional headquarters to facilitate offshore trading and supply chain management, and expand globally.
Wong, also import and export sector lawmaker, said that Hong Kong should accelerate the development of new momentum in the 'airport economy' by building a highly efficient and high-value-added air cargo hub.
'Our airport handles nearly the highest volume of air cargo in the world, and with the completion of our third runway, we have what it takes to develop the 'airport economy' as neighbouring regions are rapidly emerging. Our advantage in sea freight has dwindled,' he added.
The escalating trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump, which prompted Hongkong Post to stop accepting parcels for delivery to the country by land and sea starting Wednesday, in response to what it called 'bullying' tariff hikes.
Highlighting Hong Kong's world-class aviation infrastructure, Wong said that greater collaboration with e-commerce exporters in the Greater Bay Area was crucial to solidify the city's position as a leading air cargo hub in the evolving global trade landscape.
'Establishing dedicated logistics hubs for e-commerce near Hong Kong's airport cargo terminals leasing to major e-commerce platforms can create a cluster effect,' Wong said.
'The international flight connections and the small package processing capabilities of airports in Guangdong and other Greater Bay Area provinces need to work together with Hong Kong's infrastructure to achieve true global reach.'
Fellow lawmaker Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung of the commercial sector said the US-initiated trade war had negatively affected Hong Kong's manufacturing and re-export trade, with various businesses being forced to absorb costs, accepting loss-making orders or relocating production.
'The government needs to support businesses, especially [small and medium-sized enterprises] SMEs, to help them overcome difficulties while accelerating the exploration of emerging markets like Asean and the Middle East as well as mainland China,' Lam said in the same radio show.
'It also needs to leverage Hong Kong's free port status and CEPA policies to facilitate joint ventures between Hong Kong and mainland businesses.'
Lam added that attracting foreign investment to access the mainland market amid the volatile global environment would strengthen the city's position as an international financial and trade centre.

US, Chinese officials exchange barbs at Shanghai event over trade

(EPA Images pic) SHANGHAI : US and Chinese officials traded barbs at a celebration held by a US business chamber in Shanghai on Friday, as the chamber appealed to both countries to provide more certainty to American businesses operating in China. Scott Walker, consul general of US consulate in Shanghai, told a gathering of US businesses aimed at celebrating the 110th anniversary of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Shanghai that the US-China economic relationship had been unbalanced and non-reciprocal 'for far too long.' 'We want an end to discriminatory actions and retaliation against US companies in China,' he said. In a speech that directly followed Walker's, Chen Jing, a Shanghai Communist Party official who is also the president of the Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, countered Walker's view. 'I believe the consul general's view is prejudiced, ungrounded and not aligning with the phone call of our heads of states last night,' he said. The interaction reflects the continued strained relationship between both countries as the trade war continues to simmer. US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke over a long anticipated call on Thursday, confronting weeks of brewing trade tensions and a battle over critical minerals. Trump later said they agreed to further talks. It came in the middle of a dispute between Washington and Beijing in recent weeks over 'rare earths' minerals that threatened to tear up a fragile truce in the trade war between the two biggest economies. The countries struck a 90-day deal on May 12 to roll back some of the triple-digit, tit-for-tat tariffs they had placed on each other since Trump's January inauguration but the deal has not addressed broader concerns that strain the relationship and Trump has accused China of violating the agreement. Eric Zheng, president of AmCham Shanghai which counts over 1,000 companies among its membership, told reporters on the sidelines of the event that many companies had put their decision-making on pause due to the uncertainty. 'People are looking for some more definitive, durable statements on both sides that enable businesses to feel more secure,' he said. 'Our number one ask from the two governments is to give us some certainty so that we can plan accordingly.'

(EPA Images pic) BISHKEK : Russian ally Kyrgyzstan today quietly dismantled Central Asia's tallest monument to Vladimir Lenin, the revolutionary founder of the Soviet Union. Ex-Soviet states across the region are seeking to strengthen their national identities, renaming cities that have Russian-sounding names and replacing statues to Soviet figures with local and national heroes. Russia, which has military bases in Kyrgyzstan, is striving to maintain its influence there in the face of competition from China and the west and amid its invasion of Ukraine. Officials in the city of Osh – where the 23m-high monument stood on the central square – warned against 'politicising' the decision to 'relocate' it. Osh is the second largest city in the landlocked mountainous country. The figure was quietly taken down overnight and is set to be 'relocated', Osh officials said. The decision 'should not be politicised', city hall said, pointing to several other instances in Russia 'where Lenin monuments have also been dismantled or relocated'. 'This is a common practice aimed at improving the architectural and aesthetic appearance of cities,' it said in a statement. Despite some attempts to de-Sovietise the region, memorials and statues to Soviet figures are common across the region, with monuments to Lenin prevalent in the vast majority of cities in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan was annexed and incorporated into the Russian empire in the 19th century and then became part of the Soviet Union following the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. It gained independence with the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

With G7 on horizon, Lee Jae-myung races to fill key posts in South Korea
SEOUL: President Lee Jae-myung (pic) is set to enter his second week in office focused on filling key Cabinet posts and secretariat appointments, as he gears up for his diplomatic debut at the Group of Seven summit in Canada. Lee took the oath of office on Wednesday (June 4), immediately after the election victory and without a transition period, as his conservative predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, was impeached in mid-December last year for his brief imposition of martial law and removed from office in April. The new president is now tasked with addressing the fallout from the monthslong leadership void in South Korea while Washington's deadline on the pause of US President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs is about a month away. There are speculations that Lee's in-person meeting with US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba could materialise on the occasion of Lee's visit to Canada. Earlier this week, both Seoul and Washington confirmed that Lee had held phone talks with his US counterpart Friday night Seoul time. A day after the 20-minute phone call, Lee's spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a briefing Saturday that Lee has "made the decision to attend" the Group of Seven summit scheduled on June 15-17 in Canada. Lee's office has yet to unveil Lee's itinerary for the summit. Regarding Lee's potential meeting with Trump, an official from the presidential office said it was "faithfully preparing" for the meeting. The official added that phone talks with world leaders, such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, were also being arranged. Lee would become the first South Korean president to attend the G7 summit in two years, after his disgraced predecessor Yoon attended one in Hiroshima, Japan, in 2023. The surprising announcement over Lee's G7 summit attendance came a few weeks after Lee, then-presidential candidate of the liberal Democratic Party of Korea, said in a news conference on May 18 that he believed South Korea had not received an invitation for the summit. At the same news conference, Lee said that he prioritises domestic issues over his presence at the NATO summit scheduled for June 24-26 in the Netherlands, unless the event "specifically addresses current issues" of concern. On his first day in office, the first executive order Lee issued was to establish a body for the emergency economic review to address the faltering national economy. Meanwhile, Lee's office on Sunday announced more of Lee's secretary nominations, signaling a boost to resolve a social division and igniting a reform drive targeting the prosecution. Woo Sang-ho, a former four-term lawmaker, was nominated presidential secretary for political affairs. Woo has also formerly served in key leadership roles in the major liberal party, and is deemed a right fit for the position to revive bipartisanship and resolve social conflict in South Korea, given his lifelong experience in politics, Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik said in a briefing Sunday. Former prosecutor Oh Kwang-soo was named presidential secretary for civil affairs. Kang said Oh has a "deep understanding of Lee's initiatives to reform South Korea's prosecution." Referring to multiple criminal cases for which Lee was indicted, the presidential office said Lee had fallen victim to politically motivated prosecution, which often sought to remove political opponents of then-President Yoon. Also, Lee Kyu-youn, a career journalist and former CEO of JTBC, was picked as presidential secretary for public relations and communication. This follows the announcement of Lee's nominations of key figures in his first week of presidency, including prime minister nominee Kim Min-seok, Chief of Staff Kang, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, Director of National Policy Kim Yong-beom, and others. While the two more senior presidential secretary seats remain vacant as of press time, alongside deputy director posts at the presidential National Security Office, the presidential office was "still reviewing" future nominations, according to an official who asked for anonymity. Another official of the presidential office said that Lee's future nominations for Cabinet ministers will not come into shape in the near future. The official said, "The prime minister nominee is now preparing for the parliament's confirmation hearing. We need to wait and see how the hearing proceeds."
