Noida sees 16% learning gap in government and private schools

Time of India21 hours ago
Noida: Govt school students' performance fell far behind that of their peers in private ones in Noida, making it the only district in UP with a wide learning gap last year.
The findings, part of the PARAKH survey that assesses learning outcomes at three key stages — foundational (Class 3), preparatory (Class 6), and middle (Class 9)—show that govt school students in Noida scored an average of 60%, while private school students achieved 76%, marking the widest gap in the state.
The data was released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on Wednesday. At the foundational level (Class 3), Noida's performance was also below the state average, trailing by 3% points in language and 4% points in mathematics.

In contrast, neighbouring Ghaziabad fared better, with govt schools scoring above the state average in both language (71%) and mathematics (65%). Girls outperformed boys in early grades across both districts.
The trend continued in Class 6, with Noida again trailing in both language and numeracy. However, in Class 9, Noida showed modest improvement, scoring two points above the state average, while Ghaziabad led with a six-point advantage.
Districts were categorised into four performance groups: UDIT (excelling), UDAY (rising), UNNAT (developing), and UDBHAV (emerging). Noida was placed in the lowest 'UDBHAV' category for Classes 3 and 6, indicating early signs of growth, and 'UNNAT' for Class 9, denoting developing status.

Ghaziabad was ranked higher across all levels.
The survey also highlighted systemic challenges in Noida's education system: 78% of schools lacked support for students with special needs, and 54% of teachers had not received any ICT-related training in the past year. The report called for greater community engagement and innovative teaching strategies to improve learning outcomes.

Maharashtra to bring holistic progress cards for school students

Students in schools under the Maharashtra state board will get Holistic Progress Cards (HPCs), which will also include their achievements in extra-curricular activities, as opposed to the existing report cards which assess only the academic performance. The state plans to bring HPCs from the ongoing academic year, starting with Class 1 students. This was announced in a fresh Government Resolution issued by the state's school education department on Monday detailing various aspects of the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the school education sector. Apart from informing restructuring of school education, the GR also states that the new curriculum implementation will start with Grade 1 from the ongoing academic year 2025-26. Under the sub-head of evaluation, the GR mentions the introduction of HPC. 'The HPC, as the name suggests, will include information on holistic development of a students, which is more than marks obtained in different subjects, as per the structure of a conventional report card issued for students in existing practice,' said an official from the school education department, adding that National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a model HPC for different stages of school education. Based on this, the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will prepare HPC format for Maharashtra. The official added, 'Under the NEP, there is equal importance to extra-curricular activities from sports to arts and even skill education. A student's achievement in all these non-academic activities will also be part of this report card to provide a more holistic evaluation of a student.' The GR reiterates commencement of the 5+3+3+4 structure of school education, as recommended under NEP 2020 wherein first five years (3 years of pre-primary and classes 1 and 2) will be foundational stage, Classes 3 to 5 will be preparatory stage, Classes 6 to 8 will be covered under middle school and final four years (Classes 9 to 12) will be secondary education. As per the phase-wise implementation plan for the new structure, the GR mentions that it will start with Class 1 from academic year 2025-26. According to the official, a revised GR was issued on Monday following revocation of earlier two GRs on NEP implementation in school education which initially included introduction of a three-language formula.

‘The road not taken... was also blocked': What made this Bengaluru Redditor compare traffic to a zombie movie?

Bengaluru traffic woes are no secret, but a recent post on Reddit has gone viral for perfectly capturing the chaos many residents face every day. A user compared their blocked commute to being stuck in a zombie movie, triggering a wave of relatable responses from frustrated citizens. Usual Route Turns into a Maze of Road Closures The post, titled 'Riding in Bengaluru is like a maze', was shared by Reddit user @Infinite-Fold-1360. They explained how a typical ride to the office turned into a nightmare because of multiple road blockages caused by sewage work. "I started from my house at 10 am, hoping to reach the office by 10:30. The first street was blocked. The second route? Also blocked due to sewage work. The third one had a mile-long jam because all other roads were blocked,' the user wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nova Friburgo: Método fácil para ganhar músculo após os 50+ (comece hoje) Revista do Homem Saiba Mais Undo "Felt Like a Zombie Movie", Says Redditor The user said they barely moved from their location by 10:15 am. They ended the post with a striking line: 'It is sad that our daily tragedy is turning into an experience of negotiating a maze.' One user wrote, 'Riding a bike here is like playing Tetris. You just try to fit wherever you can. Total chaos, waste of time, money, and mental health.' Another said, 'I just moved to Bengaluru and I already feel this pain. It's madness.' Some Blame Poor Planning, Others Praise Google Maps Several users suggested using apps like Google Maps to find alternate routes. One commented, 'Thank God for Maps. It's the only way I survive daily commutes.' Others pointed out how both two-wheelers and four-wheelers now share the same suffering. One said, 'The pure pleasure of seeing bike riders feel the same pain as us on four wheels.' Why Bengaluru's Traffic Keeps Making Headlines Bengaluru, India's tech hub, has long struggled with traffic congestion, made worse by ongoing construction, poor drainage systems, and rapid urban growth. Social media has become a platform where locals vent, laugh, and cry about their commute experiences, with many posts like this going viral for highlighting real and relatable issues.
