Dodgers outlast Mets 7-5 in 13 innings in wild, rainy NLCS rematch

CBS News24-05-2025
The Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the New York Mets 7-5 in a wild rematch of last year's National League Championship Series on a rainy Friday night at Citi Field.
As the clock approached midnight, New York tied it with three runs in the ninth off closer Tanner Scott. Jeff McNeil laced a two-run triple and Tyrone Taylor followed with an RBI single to make it 5-all, sending hardy fans left in a crowd of 40,449 into a frenzy after they waited out a 98-minute rain delay in the third.
But the Mets squandered chance after chance to win over the final five innings — sometimes with their best hitters at the plate — and Los Angeles finally broke through in the 13th against Huascar Brazobán (3-1), the ninth New York pitcher.
Automatic runner Will Smith scored from second on the double by Teoscar Hernández, who also had an early two-run single. Hernández scrambled to third on Hyeseong Kim's single and came home on Andy Pages' sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.
Luis García (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings for the win, raising his arms on the mound when center fielder Tommy Edman made a sliding catch at 12:56 a.m. for the final out of a game that took 4 hours, 8 minutes — not including the rain delay.
Moments later, a message on the giant videoboard reminded fans to stick around for the fireworks show that followed.
Smith, Pages and Max Muncy each had an RBI single for the Dodgers, who won the 2024 NLCS in six games on the way to their eighth World Series title. Los Angeles is 20-5 at Citi Field since 2017, including the postseason.
Brett Baty homered for the Mets, who have lost six of eight, and Pete Alonso was gifted a sacrifice fly on an unusual play in the fourth.
It appeared Hernández threw out Starling Marte at the plate with a strong peg from right field, but umpire Tripp Gibson called obstruction on Muncy at third base for blocking Marte's view of Hernández making the catch.
Clayton Kershaw's second start for the Dodgers this season since coming off the injured list was cut short by the rain delay in the top of the third.
Key moments
Mets rookie Luisangel Acuña stranded the potential winning run at third base in the ninth and 11th. Alonso flied out to the center-field warning track with two runners aboard to conclude the 10th. And with the Dodgers employing a five-man infield after a pair of intentional walks, García got Luis Torrens to ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 12th.
Key stat
Scott was handed his fourth blown save in 14 chances this season.
Up next
Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin (2-0, 4.05 ERA) makes his fifth start of the season Saturday night against LHP David Peterson (2-2, 2.86).

Mets' Edwin Díaz Predicted To Exit Contract Early To Chase More Money

The New York Mets have been playing poorly as of late, and they need to turn things around in a hurry. This could be the last year that some of their star players are with the team. The Mets could lose both Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz in free agency. Both have player options for next season. Alonso will likely find a lucrative long-term deal in free agency after agreeing to a two-year deal last offseason, with the second year being a player option. However, Díaz is in year three of a five-year contract. He has an opt-out after this season which would lock him in through 2027, plus a club option for 2028. Should he opt in, the Mets could be in line to keep the closer for three more seasons. However, The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicted Díaz would opt out of his deal and find more money. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 04: Edwin Díaz #39 of the New York Mets reacts after pitching a strikeout in the ninth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Citi Field on August 04, 2025... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 04: Edwin Díaz #39 of the New York Mets reacts after pitching a strikeout in the ninth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Citi Field on August 04, 2025 in New York City. More"Díaz is back to his dominant self this season. Since April 23, he has given up just two earned runs over 36 appearances," wrote Bowden. "Overall, he has a 1.57 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Díaz holds $18.5 million player options for 2026 and 2027, and the Mets have a $20.4 million club option for 2028, but the three-time All-Star will likely opt out in November. When they play 'Narco' by Timmy Trumpet and Díaz heads to the mound at Citi Field, the crowd goes crazy and excitement doesn't stop until he retires the side, which he usually does. But he won't need the music when he reaches free agency to again get paid as one of the top closers in the game." Last season, Díaz had a 3.52 ERA and did not look like himself after missing all of 2023. However, now he looks like a superstar closer once again. He was named an All-Star this year and is having one of his best seasons. More MLB: Phillies Predicted to Move On From 2-Time All-Star After Just 1 Season

Savannah Bananas sell out back-to-back Chicago games at Rate Field

The Savannah Bananas are in Chicago for the first time ever to play their signature Banana Ball against the Firefighters at Rate Field Friday. If you've never seen the Savannah Bananas play, it's unlike any baseball game you've ever seen. Instead of scoring runs, the team that wins the inning gets the point and whoever ends the game with the most points wins. Games are limited to two hours, you're not allowed to bunt, no walks are allowed, batters can steal first and if a fan catches a foul ball then it counts as an out. Both Friday and a second game Saturday at Rate Field are sold out, but there's a chance you can still see them. The team will be at Dunkin Donuts in Mt. Greenwood Saturday morning. And in honor of the games, Rate Field will have a special food menu featuring everything banana: banana beer, banana cotton candy, even an Italian beef and banana pepper pizza, plus a jerk chicken sandwich with banana peppers in a banana boat.

Seven Super Sports Resorts For Upping Your Game

From marathons and triathlons to auto rallies and amateur golf tournaments, traveling to participate in sporting events has become increasingly popular in recent years. And so have sports resorts, places where you can learn or improve a particular athletic skill that also offer great accommodation, amazing food, and maybe even a bit of evening entertainment. First and foremost, the top resorts are renowned for their top-notch courses, courts, and other facilities. But they also offer coaching, equipment and modern high-tech equipment that helps you improve your technique. Here are a couple of the best resorts for certain sports. Spring Mountain Motor Resort (Auto Racing) If you've got the need for speed, this multi-track facility an hour's drive west of the Las Vegas Strip is nirvana. Numerous track configurations include the longest road course in North America (6.1 miles), as well as a karting complex. Among the outfits that utilize these tracks are the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School, Cadillac V-Performance Academy, and Radical Racing Academy. Casitas arrayed around a small lake provide overnight accommodation. Like other high-end motor racing resorts around the globe — like the Magarigawa Club in Japan and Black Rock Motor Resort in Australia — Spring Mountain is largely reserved for club members. But the resort does offer public driving days when nonmembers can test their mettle on the tracks. Beaches (Pickleball) Paddle in paradise is the theme of the Beaches, which now offers all-inclusive pickleball vacations at its oceanfront resorts in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos. In partnership with USA Pickleball, the resorts offer multiple (lighted) courts, equipment for those who didn't pack their own, daily open play, partner matching for solo players, group and private lessons, and a weekly tournament. There are also beginner sessions for grown-ups, teens, and children. Like any other guest at a Beaches resort, pickleball players can indulge in all-you-can-eat meals and butler service, swimming pools and waterpark, scuba diving and paddleboarding, tennis, yoga and kid's games. Rancho la Puerta (Running) Located just over the border, this renowned health and wellness resort in Baja California hosts a world-class running program that caters to everyone from beginners and advanced. The program includes guided indoor cardio workouts, various levels of drills and interval training, and running trails through the surrounding semi-desert wilderness that range from three to nine miles. Complementing the daily offerings are week-long trail running camps during which ultra-experienced trail runners teach basic form, as well as uphill and downhill skills, and tips on gear and safety. Founded in 1940, the resort also offers farm-to-table cuisine, spa and wellness treatments, and roomy casitas with traditional Mexican furnishings and art. Kiawah Resort (Tennis) Roy Barth, a veteran of all four Grand Slam tournaments as a singles and doubles player, founded the tennis academy at this South Carolina paradise island retreat. The complex features 22 total courts including 10 Har-Tru clay courts, plus a range of group and private lessons for adults and juniors, beginners and veterans trying to improve their game. The weekly schedule includes backhand, forehand and net play drills, serve and volley clinics. Among the available packages are women's tennis weekends instruction and round-robin play. Players have a choice of staying at Kiawah Island Golf Resort or The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island. Four Seasons Papagayo (Surfing) If price is no object and you really want to learn how to surf, this posh Costa Rican resort has created SurfX, a beachfront program that includes personal instruction, advice on which boards are best for you, and après surf activities like massage, meditation and flow exercises. There's also the option of a day-long surfing safari with your instructors that includes a visit to a local surfboard shaping workshop and a chance to hit the waves at Playa Avellanas and Playa Tamarindo. There's also a unique 'surf skate' program that teaches adults and kids skateboard moves that can also be applied to surfing. Gleneagles (Golf) Since the first duffers teed off in 1924, this Scottish course has gained repute as one of the world's top golf spots. Part of its allure is playing in the country where golf was invented in the 15th century. But there are also three championship courses which have hosted the likes of the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. There's also a chance to stay in a hotel that could easily pass for a castle, a luxurious five-star abode with rooms overlooking the scenic Perthshire countryside and spacious self-catering lodges. The resort's PGA National Academy offers instruction for both beginners and veterans for individuals or groups of up to four players. There's also 10- and 18-hole 'course tuition' with a PGA qualified pro who plays a round with you. Omni La Costa Resort (Multi-Sport) Located around a half-an-hour drive north of downtown San Diego, La Costa offers a range of sporting facilities and instruction. As the past host of championship golf and tennis tournaments, the resort offers two 18-hole courses and a dozen tennis courts (including four clay courts and a tournament stadium). La Costa's group fitness classes span everything from yoga, spin, and Pilates to power boxing, high intensity interval training, and cardiovascular boot camp. The resort also offers eight swimming pools, pickleball courts, and guided bike tours along the nearby Pacific coast. Chefs Emily Brubaker — who recently won the Yes, Chef! television cooking competition hosted by Martha Stewart and José Andrés — and Cameron Dixon lead an all-star kitchen staff at the resort steak house and upscale VUE restaurant.
