Fans, brands, players and parties: Here's what you missed at WNBA All-Star in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — Tippy-toed kids with arms stretched over stanchions and weighed down by basketballs waited eagerly outside a hotel to catch a glimpse of their favorite players. People danced through downtown to Taylor Swift's "I'm feeling 22." A crowd gathered to shoot hoops on orange courts painted onto streets, dusty from the hum of construction all around.
It was 9:30 in the morning of the WNBA All-Star Game.
Caitlin Clark, larger than life in Indiana, quite literally loomed over the festivities, her image adorning high-rise buildings, posters and merchandise. The Indiana Fever guard didn't play because of an injury, but still captained the team from the sideline and made appearances throughout the weekend.
The weekend. Activations galore — a Coach party, Lilly fan center with branded basketballs, Wilson pop-up with Clark selling her signature line and more. Player appearances all over town. National media descending. Three days of fan zones featuring souvenirs, swag, bounce houses, games and watch parties, culminating with fireworks after the Saturday night main event broadcasted by ABC.
And, of course, the Stud Budz.
Dark clouds rolled through downtown Indianapolis just hours before tipoff, but the weather cleared up in time for the game and it seemed nothing could dampen the spirits of the fans inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
"Amazing," said Hartley Hensler, 7, who flew in from Las Vegas with her mother, Jessica, for their third WNBA All-Star Game. "And there's a lot of posters on buildings. There's a lot of A'Ja (Wilson). She's even on buses."
Who's Hensler's favorite player? 'Jackie Young. See, her name is on the back," she grinned, turning around to show the back of her jersey.

The hype and celebrations of a women's sports league reaching new heights of popularity is happening parallel to contentious negotiations over the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A CBA meeting Thursday did not go well and they took the court Saturday in warm-up shirts that read, "Pay Us What You Owe Us."
The players cite the league's impressive growth and trajectory while negotiating for better pay and benefits. And that growth was tangible this weekend.
Sally McCracken and Debbie Heinrichs, both of Plainfield, Indiana, and Fever season ticket holders, were at their first WNBA All-Star Game since 2003 in New York City. When asked how this year's event compared, their eye widened and McCracken said, "Oh, so many more people and so much more excitement. It's amazing to see everyone get the attention they deserve. I think Caitlin has driven a lot of that, but it's not like the others weren't deserving. They've deserved it for a long time."
WNBA Live, a two-day fan festival at the Indiana Convention Center, is much bigger than the previous three years it's been held. WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert said there are more than 25 brand activations across 125,000 square feet this year, a more than sixfold increase since 2022, when four brands activated in Chicago for the very first WNBA Live.
Among the more than 20,000 fans who attended WNBA Live was Thomas Brown of Indianapolis and his 3-year-old daughter Zora.
"I bought my baby a jersey for the first time and some shoes," Brown told USA TODAY Sports during halftime of the All-Star game. "This is her first time coming to a basketball game and I thought it was very important for her to have some role models to look up to when it comes to basketball. She's loving it so far. The atmosphere is great. It's really loud, so we had to put some earphones on her, but other than that, a lot of excitement, a lot of energy from the crowd."
An announced crowd of 16,988 showed up for the All-Star Game, packing the arena's three tiers of seats and cheering while lasers, lights and music filled the air. The halftime show featured a GloRilla performance and, at the close of the third quarter, there was an aerialist hanging from the ceiling.
Celebrities and big names in the sports world lined the courtside seats, including comedian Leslie Jones, six-time NBA All-Star Pau Gasol and South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley.
But the loudest part of the night came after the game, when the crowd voiced its solidarity with the WNBA players fighting for more equitable pay. "Pay Them! Pay Them!" Chants rose above the voice of Engelbert as she attempted to announce Napheesa Collier MVP after she led her team to a win over Team Clark.
"I see a bunch of strong women who aren't going to back down and fight for what we want," Collier said after accepting her award, the crowd's chants changing to cheers. "I couldn't do it without them."

Tipping off 25 hours after getting beat 111-58 by league-leading Minnesota in the worst home defeat in WNBA history, the Aces took out their frustrations on the expansion Valkyries, who had won three straight road games. Las Vegas led 50-25 at halftime with Aces reserves scoring 25 points, while the Valkyries' bench had two points. The Aces finished with 18 3-pointers, tying the franchise record. Jackie Young scored 20 points for the Aces (15-14). A'ja Wilson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Chelsea Gray added 11 points. Ilana Rupert led the Valkyries (14-14) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Carla Leite and Laeticia Amihere both had 14 points and Kaila Charles added 13. The Aces led 27-14 after one quarter, making 9 of 16 shots. In the closing seconds of the second quarter, Golden State's Janelle Salaun was given a Flagrant 2 foul for knocking Loyd to the ground behind the play. CHICAGO (AP) — Kahleah Copper scored 25 points, Alyssa Thomas had a triple-double and the Phoenix Mercury beat Chicago 83-67 on Sunday night, handing the Sky their eighth straight loss. Thomas had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for her second triple-double with the Mercury and her 13th in the regular season. Sami Whitcomb added 11 points for the Mercury (17-11), who had lost two straight and five of six. They outscored the Sky 56-32 in the middle two quarters and had 30 fastbreak points to just three for Chicago. All-Star Satou Sabally was not with the team for personal reasons. Elizabeth Williams had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Sky (7-21), who were without Angel Reese. Michaela Onyenwere also scored 13 points and Kamilla Cardoso had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chicago was outrebounded 45-40 and outscored in the paint 46-34. Reese missed her second straight game and fourth in five games with a bad back. After making 5 of 25 shots in the first quarter when Chicago took a 19-13 lead the Mercury made 12 of 15 in the second and raced to a 42-34 halftime advantage. Copper had 10 points and Phoenix had 10 offensive rebounds and 17 fastbreak points. The lead ballooned to 24 points in the third quarter as the Mercury made 10 of 16 shots. The game featured sisters Maddy and Kathryn Westbeld facing off for the second time. Maddy was a second-round draft pick of the Sky and Kathryn made the Mercury after playing nine seasons overseas. Maddy had nine points in 22 minutes and Kathryn none in six minutes. Kathryn had 13 points in a 94-89 Mercury win in the teams' first meeting early in the season, but Maddy did not play. ___ AP WNBA:

Pagliuca's $325M bid to buy and move Connecticut Sun not yet approved by WNBA

Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca said the potential deal to buy the Connecticut Sun for a record amount and move the team still needs approval from the WNBA Board of Governors. Pagliuca released a statement through his group on social media on Sunday confirming an offer had been made to buy the team and move it out of Mohegan Sun Arena, but said there were still approvals that had not been obtained from the WNBA. A person with knowledge of the sale had said Saturday that Pagliuca has reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun for a record $325 million and move the team to Boston. The franchise wouldn't play in its new home until the 2027 season. Pagliuca also would contribute $100 million for a new practice facility in Boston for the team, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Saturday because the deal hasn't been publicly announced. 'Central to our proposal is enabling the Sun to play in larger capacity arenas in New England,' Pagliuca wrote. 'We believe our record-setting offer and deep commitment to growing the WNBA in the region that is home to the most passionate basketball fans in the nation will significantly benefit the league, the team, and all its fans." The sale is pending approval of the league and its Board of Governors. 'Our offer is subject to obtaining the required league approvals, as is the case for all such transactions,' Pagliuca wrote on social media. 'This approval has not been obtained thus far, and we cannot proceed without it. We will respect, cooperate with, and abide by all league rules and decisions on these matters.' The league put out a statement Saturday, saying that moving a team was at the discretion of the WNBA and not individual franchises. 'Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams,' the league said in a statement. The Sun have played one regular season game at TD Garden each of the last two years, including one against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in July. The league has announced five expansion teams that will begin play over the next five seasons with Portland (2026), Toronto (2026), Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030) joining the WNBA. Each paid a then-record $250 million expansion fee. Nine other cities bid for expansion teams, including Houston, which the league singled out as getting a team in the future when it announced Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia in June. Boston did not. 'No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston. Celtics' prospective ownership team has also reached out to the league office and asked that Boston receive strong consideration for a WNBA franchise at the appropriate time.' The Boston Globe first reported the sale. The Sun are owned by the Mohegan Tribe, which runs the casino where the team has played since 2003. The Tribe bought the franchise for $10 million and relocated it from Orlando that year. The Connecticut franchise was the first in the league to be run by a non-NBA owner and also became the first to turn a profit. The team announced in May that it was searching for a potential buyer for the franchise and had hired investment bank Allen & Company to conduct the probe. The WNBA has experienced rapid growth the last few seasons and ownership groups have been investing more into their teams, including player experiences. That has come in the way of practice facilities. The Sun are one of the few teams in the league that haven't announced any plans for a new training facility. Connecticut practices either at the arena in the casino or a local community center. Despite the lack of facilities, the Sun have been one of the most successful teams in the league, making the postseason in 16 seasons, including a run of six straight semifinal appearances. But the team was hit hard this offseason with the entire starting five from last season leaving either via free agency or trade. Connecticut is currently in last place in the WNBA at 5-22. The team sent out a letter to season ticket holders last week saying they'd still be playing at the casino next year. The last team to be sold in the WNBA was in 2021 when real estate investor Larry Gottesdiener led a group that bought the Atlanta Dream for under $10 million. A year earlier, Mark Davis paid roughly $2 million for the Las Vegas Aces. ___ AP WNBA:
