Kid Convinces Mom to Buy Her A Cookie — Why This Top Therapist Loves the Interaction
Authoritarian parenting is increasingly falling out of favor, and Dr. John Gottman, a renowned psychologist and leading researcher on relationships, welcomes the change.
Recently, Gottman came across a TikTok video in which a mother orders a coffee at a drive-thru. When her young daughter asks for a cookie, she's told, 'We have cookies at home.' Without missing a beat, the girl replies, 'Well, we have coffee at home.' Her logic is sound, and she gets the cookie.
Though the moment, captured by content creator Charles Trippy, was staged, with similar clips circulating online for years, it doesn't change Gottman's takeaway. He hopes more parents will see interactions like this, not as chances to assert control, but as opportunities to help their children feel seen and heard.
'Instead of responding with, 'You can't have a cookie because I said so,' they reinforced her for being logical,' Gottman tells TODAY.com. 'And it makes me very happy to see that.'
One of the key goals of parenting. Gottman suggests, is to raise kids who can think independently and aren't blindly obedient to authority. Ideally, they grow into thoughtful citizens, people who, when faced with power or pressure, can evaluate what's being asked of them and respond critically.
'We want kids who say, 'I don't agree with this, and here's why,'' Gottman explains.
He believes that's especially important when raising girls, noting that self-assured women are less likely to end up in controlling or unhealthy relationships. Gottman and his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, co-founders of the Gottman Institute in Washington State, are the parents of a 34-year-old daughter, Moriah, who recently graduated from medical school.
Gottman recalls a time when Moriah, a talented jazz singer, was dating a man who didn't want her to perform in public. She ended the romance, a firm, empowered decision that he says made him 'incredibly proud.'
'You want a daughter who can stand up for herself, someone who knows her worth and doesn't tolerate being told what she can or can't do,' he says. 'We don't want to raise compliant, passive children — boys or girls —because they won't grow up believing in themselves.'

Pregnant Woman Wonders Why Husky Is Acting Different—Then Has Realization
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Hearts have melted as a new mom showed the bond between her dog and her baby daughter, which began forming before she was born. S Ingelson, 32, from Los Angeles, California, is the proud owner of Siberian Husky, Theo, who has amassed a fair following on social media as viewers fall in love with the dog's quirks—and bond with his human siblings. "My daughter is now five months old and they're total besties," Ingelson told Newsweek. "He lays by her side most of the day while his other little human, [her] 3-year-old brother, is at school. Theo has helped us raise both of them!" She recalled when their son was born, and watching his and Theo's "bond grow so strong"—and it was the same when she was expecting her daughter, as Theo began to form a friendship with her before she was even born. "Theo would start howling so much more," she said. "My husband even thought he'd howl more when I was around, and we kept saying he was talking to his little sister." A video showing how Theo acted when Ingelson was pregnant has gone viral since being posted to Ingelson's TikTok account, @thathuskytheo, on May 21. It began by showing Theo "before pregnancy," clips of the Husky relaxing, staring quietly out the window, and being "always calm and quiet"—and then went on to show what Theo was like when she was expecting her daughter. All of a sudden, Theo was becoming far more vocal, howling happily while on walks, while looking out the window, and while relaxing in the garden. TikTok @thathuskytheo Ingelson wrote that she and her husband "realized he wanted his little human to know his voice." And, nine months later, the two got to meet in person, as the video showed the moment Ingelson's husband walked into their home carrying their newborn. And, after giving a "welome home" howl, the dog walked right up the the baby girl and watched her in her carseat. The sweet video ends with Theo and the baby now, often sitting side by side as Theo continues his howls. Ingelson wrote in the caption: "She's known him since he was in the womb." Huskies are known to be very vocal dogs, using a wide range of noises to communicate. As a pack animal closely aligned with their wolf ancestor, the breed would use these noises to communicate with the rest of the pack and with humans, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). TikTok @thathuskytheo It's not just the vocalizing that Theo did during Ingelson's second pregnancy, she told Newsweek. "He would also follow me around and watch me, almost like he was protecting me during pregnancy," she said. "Now that his little sister is here, he gets to relive the days he had with his little brother—watching over her. It's been so heartwarming." TikTok users loved the video, awarding it more than 25,000 likes and watching it 362,000 times, as one commenter joked: "Your child's first word will be aaauuuu." "So sweet! He was making sure his new pack member knew his voice and that he's got their back," another said, as one agreed: "Wants you to know you're safe with him there." And another parent shared that they're in the same boat, as they wrote: "Our Husky is my 5-month-old's best friend and protector." Stray Dog's Way of 'Paying' for Food on Beach Leaves Viewers in Tears
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A stray dog has captured the hearts of TikTok users after being filmed offering leaves in exchange for food on a beach. TikTok user Junno (@junnoreymarsiugnab) shared adorable footage of a golden retriever approaching his table repeatedly, each time with leaves in her mouth, seemingly offering them as payment for a bite to eat. The video has since garnered more than 188,000 likes and almost 1 million views on TikTok. "This stray dog is paying me with leaves in exchange with food," Junno wrote in text overlaying the video. "This cutie has a sense of currency," he captioned the post. In the footage, the dog can be seen presenting several leafy offerings from the sand, gently placing each one on the table in front of him before waiting patiently for a treat. Feeding stray dogs can be a compassionate act, but experts advise doing so responsibly. The Humane Society and other animal welfare organizations say that providing food is safest when done with caution—ideally in a quiet, low-traffic area—and with clean, nutritious options such as kibble or cooked meat. Feeding strays regularly can help them trust humans, but it may also attract more animals, so ongoing care or partnering with local shelters is encouraged. Interestingly, dogs have been known to engage in "bartering" behavior. Chasing Dog Tales says that some canines will bring toys, sticks, or other items to their humans in exchange for treats, affection, or playtime. This kind of trading is seen as a form of learned behavior, where dogs associate a specific action with a reward. Stock image: A golden retriever lays on the beach next to a leaf. "Just imagine when he gives someone else a leaf and they don't give food the dog is like 'this scammer stole meh money!'" one user joked. "To be fair, she did trade the BEST leafs she had," posted Gavin. "Look at her eyes, she is so sad and probably was mistreated," wrote Laura. "Get her a bacon burger," another viewer commented. "She can't be a stray, she's adorable," added Emma. "I think that payment was enough for a steak dinner," shared another user. Junno later replied to one viewer, adding: "She got a belly rub also as a change." Newsweek reached out to @junnoreymarsiugnab for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
