Rockford mayor declares week-long celebration of early childhood development programs
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara has proclaimed April 5th – 11th as 'The Week of the Young Child,' in conjunction with a national movement to encourage early childhood learning and development.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) organizes and promotes the week-long event that highlights the role of early childhood education in shaping an individual's future.
Each day this week revolves around a different theme, with today being Music Monday, focusing on the importance of music in a child's development.
'We use it all throughout our entire day. We use it as a vehicle for academics. We use it as a vehicle to move kids from one area to another, like transitions,' said Summerdale Early Childhood Center Principal Dr. Jennifer Lak-Keilman. 'Music can be linked to being a vehicle to help children learn their phonetic awareness words, putting things together. Also, math concepts can be tied to music, and we can use them for rhythm and for counting activities and such.'
'Early childhood programs play a key role in the development of language skills, social-emotional skills, those crucial foundational skills for reading, math skills, and even when you think social studies, taking care of the environment, ecology, and things like that are all learned during these young years,' said executive director of Early Chilhood Education Kim Nelson.
Harlem High School, at 1 Huskie Circle, in Machesney Park, will host a 'Week of the Young Child' family fun fair on Saturday, April 12th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

815 BlackFest celebrates Black culture and tackles issues
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford's Levings Park will host the return of the 815 BlackFest, a summer festival celebrating Black culture. The event will be headlined by Just Fine, a Mary J. Blige tribute act from Pittsburgh. Along with the food, vendors, and music, the stated goal of the event is to address more serious issues in the Black community, including hunger, domestic violence, mental health, education, financial literacy, and homelessness. 'When we look at those six pillars, almost every avenue of those six pillars I've touched at some point in my life. And a lot of people have,' said community advocate Tina Renee. 'But the one thing that has brought me through those pillars, and the struggles, is having those connections and those resources, or having people who surround me that can help me through those.' 815 BlackFest will take place on June 29th, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Levings Park, 1420 S. Pierpont Ave. Admission is free. Other performers include the Phenomenal Dolls, FAB Dance Team, Yavo, DJ H-Fresh, Trinity Rucker, and a fashion show with Shereese Croft. Small Illinois town becomes the set of a John Goodman movie overnight
MONTICELLO, Ill. (WTVO) — Monticello, a small town near Champaign, became the set of a film called 'Chili Finger' overnight. John Goodman and Bryan Cranston, among many more celebrities, filmed inside a former Hardee's. The movie, based on a true story, follows the efforts of a woman who found a finger in her bowl of chili to leverage the situation for a payout. Goodman's likeness replaced the fast food chain's sign. Residents have been in a frenzy to get a look at some of the nation's most well-known celebrities. 'John Goodman and Sean Astin, and I can't remember who else was in it, but I was like, these are like legit stars,' said Monticello resident Andrew Bailey. 'It's so cool. I've seen tons of movies with them.' 'I looked up and I said, 'That woman in line looked so familiar,' and we waited for her to speak,' said Owner of the Brown Bag, Leslie Sims. Sims could not believe her eyes when she saw actress Judy Greer standing in front of her ordering a sandwich. Business owners around the area have cited an uptick in the local economy. 'The restaurants were full last night. The parking lot was full,' said Monticello resident Susan Chumbley. Film crews will be moving from Monticello to Paxton on Friday to shoot the next portion of the movie. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
