49ers CB addresses offseason arrest in recent media availability

Yahoo29-07-2025
The San Francisco 49ers are in the middle of their 2025 training camp at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, and while the team is mostly focused on the upcoming season, cornerback Deommodore Lenoir still has a court case hanging over his head.
Lenoir, 25, was arrested back in June following an interaction with Los Angeles law enforcement when the cornerback allegedly refused to give up car keys that belonged to the driver, Marcus Cunningham, after a gun was reportedly noticed in the car.
Lenoir was released from holding the following morning and was expected to appear in court soon. He had his first chance to speak with the 49ers media over the weekend, and he shared his remorse over the situation.
'I'm different than who I was five years ago, just being at the right place, not really hanging out in areas that I shouldn't be," Lenoir said. 'So I just want to apologize to my teammates, the organization, to my coaches and to my family, just for a mistake.'
Lenoir shared that he hasn't received an update on the status of his case. According to the San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office has not received the case, and initial court date of Friday, Aug 1, isn't expected to happen.
If Lenoir is found guilty, he could be punished by the league, which could include a fine or suspension.
The 49ers originally selected Lenoir in the fifth round (No. 172 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft following his collegiate career at Oregon. Through his first four seasons he's appeared in 62 games and started 47 while recording 265 tackles (10 for a loss), 26 passes defensed, six interceptions, one sack and a forced fumble.
Last November, San Francisco gave Lenoir a five-year, $88.88 million extension, and with Charvarius Ward leaving for a three-year, $54 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, Lenoir is now the 49ers top cornerback. They're hoping that this blip is just that, and that Lenoir can get back to locking down his matchups in 2025.This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers' Deommodore Lenoir addresses offseason arrest with media

Messi to miss Miami's Leagues Cup match against Pumas

Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami's crucial Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM due to a muscle issue, coach Javier Mascherano said Tuesday. The Argentinian striker suffered what Mascherano called a "minor muscle injury" in his upper right leg in Miami's win over Necaxa last Saturday. While there is no timetable for Messi's return, Mascherano was hopeful the star would soon be back on the field. "Within the bad news, it's good news," Mascherano told reporters. "He usually recovers very well from injuries and above all, normally does with speed, so we will see. But clearly for tomorrow he is unavailable. But then we will see how he feels, how he progresses." Messi, who has a league-best 18 goals in MLS matches this season, led Miami to the Leagues Cup crown in 2023 shortly after his arrival to the Herons. Inter Miami likely need a victory over Pumas in their group stage finale to reach the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup, which features MLS and Mexican league squads. Should Miami reach the knockout stages, Messi would have two weeks to recover before the quarter-finals. Miami's next MLS match is set for Sunday against Orlando. js/nf

Report: Celtics trade 9-year veteran, draft picks to Jazz for rookie RJ Luis

The Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to trade nine-year NBA veteran Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz in a cost-cutting move, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Boston will also send the Jazz two future second-round picks in exchange for two-way rookie RJ Luis. The Jazz used part of their $26.6 million trade exception created when they moved John Collins to the LA Clippers to acquire Niang, who played with the Jazz from 2017-2021. By moving Niang, the Celtics reportedly reduced their payroll and luxury tax by $50 million, according to Yossi Gozlan of The front office has cut approximately $286 million from its expenses since the start of the offseason. Luis was a consensus second-team All-American last season at St. John's, averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, two assists and 1.4 steals on 33.6% shooting from 3-point range as a junior. He was also named the Big East Player of the Year, becoming the third player in program history to win. The 6-foot-6 guard signed a two-way contract with the Jazz on July 7 after going undrafted. He didn't play in either the Salt Lake City Summer League or the NBA Summer League due to left knee soreness sustained during the predraft process. Before playing two years at St. John's, Luis spent one season at UMass, averaging 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team. NFL bans smelling salts, saying product can mask concussion symptoms

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The NFL is banning the use of 'smelling salts' during games, saying the products aren't proven to be safe and also could mask signs of a concussion. The league sent a memo to teams on Tuesday explaining the decision to ban smelling salts and any other ammonia inhalant during pregame activities, games and halftime on the sideline or locker rooms. 'In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy,' according to the memo obtained by The Associated Press. 'The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL.' San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle first disclosed the ban during an interview with NFL Network on Tuesday, adding that he hoped the league would relent and "figure out a middle ground.' That won't happen, according to the memo, which explicitly prohibits any club personnel from providing or supplying products such as ammonia capsules, inhalers, ammonia in a cup, and any form of 'smelling salts.' Smelling salts and other similar products have been a staple on NFL sidelines for years with many players believing they can provide a sudden jolt of energy or alertness. ___ AP NFL: Josh Dubow, The Associated Press
