South Africa vs Ghana Preview: A New Fierce WAFCON Match Ahead Tonight

Morocco World11 hours ago
Rabat — This evening will mark a new fierce game between two giants, South Africa and Ghana, as part of the Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The match will take place at 5 p.m. Moroccan time at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda.
While many fans have the opportunity to watch the game live, others can enjoy the show via broadcasters, including beIN Sports.
Defending champions South Africa are eager to repeat the same experience as in 2022 to clinch another trophy.
But several giants, including Ghana, are eager to show they are also able to make positive surprises, especially as they are returning to the showpiece for the first time since they hosted the WAFCON in 2018.
According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the ongoing edition in Morocco presents the 'perfect opportunity to start afresh while building on their past successes.'
Ghana's women's team, also known as the Black Queens, reached the final in 2006, but has struggled to strengthen its position in the competition since then.
'They failed to make it past the group stages on four occasions, in 2008, 2010, 2014, and in 2018 at home,' CAF reported.
But the same source emphasized how the current generation of players is eager to embrace the opportunity of this year's edition and make the most of it.
As for South Africa, Banyana Banyana are determined to protect their legacy after the 2-1 final game against Morocco in 2022 to clinch the title.
'We are here like any other team. Every team that comes here wants to win. A lot has changed in the last three years since we won,' South Africa head coach Desiree Ellis said, noting that this edition is a new tournament.
'Teams have evolved. You cannot underestimate any team,' Ellis said, noting that the South Africa squad is a contender like any other team.
Many predict South Africa to do its utmost to defend its champion title during the game, but Ghana is not a team to underestimate, especially as they see this edition as a chance to make up for the other missed opportunities.

Moroccan sports channel apologizes for map excluding Sahara during WAFCON broadcast

Arryadia, Moroccan sports channel, issued a statement apologizing for airing a commercial segment that featured a map of Morocco excluding the Sahara, during the kickoff of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which is being hosted by the Kingdom. The segment sparked a wave of criticism on social media. The channel clarified that the content was «produced by CAF» and was part of «the official international feed provided by the Confederation of African Football as part of the live broadcast of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations matches». The statement stressed that the channel «has no control over the content of this live feed, as it merely relays the footage provided by the organizing body to all broadcasters airing the event». The channel added that after the error was detected, «the Confederation of African Football issued an official apology to Morocco's National Broadcasting and Television Company, acknowledging full responsibility for the incident». CAF also pledged «to correct the segment in question and ensure that such errors are not repeated in the future».

Morocco's Hamid Moudatiir Wins African Glory Championship Title

Moroccan kickboxer Hamid Moudatiir claimed the African Glory Championship belt in the K1 class after a dominant performance at Dakar's Grand Theatre against Ivorian fighter François Mozou. Representing Morocco alongside Morad Laroussi, Moudatiir secured the professional K1 title by the judges' decision after five rounds of action in Dakar, Senegal. Moudatiir controlled the fight with a disciplined kicking game, landing a series of sharp low and high kicks, while Mozou focused on closing the distance to rely on his boxing. The Moroccan fighter knocked Mozou down in both the second and third rounds, but the Ivorian showed resilience and fought on until the final bell. With this victory, Moudatiir becomes the new belt holder in his division. In the same event, Gasmire Diatta defeated Morad Laroussi by judges' decision after five rounds. Both Moroccan fighters were supervised by Ahmed Malahi and Mohamed Laroussi. Tags: K1 classKickboxingMoroccoMoudatiir

Wydad to Axe 21 Players in Summer Reshuffle

Wydad Athletic Club are set to release 21 players as part of a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. The clear-out follows a disappointing season, including a third-place finish in the Botola Pro and an early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, where Wydad lost all three matches – against Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain. According to various sources, head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem has confirmed the list of departing players, which includes senior figures such as goalkeeper Youssef El Moutie, and defenders Aymane Dairani, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Jamal Harkass, Nabil Marmouk, and Fahd Moufi. Midfielders and forwards leaving the squad include Ismail Moutaraji, Pedrinho, Arthur Wenderroscky, Mehdi Moubarik, Stéphane Aziz Ki, Saifeddine Bouhra, and Walid Nassi. Several young or fringe players – Ayoub Marsa, Rayhi, Ghilane, and Obang – are also set to depart. The club is undergoing a full rebuild as it looks to restore dominance in both Moroccan and African competitions. Tactical consistency and squad depth remain key challenges heading into the new season. Offloading surplus players and managing structural changes are seen as necessary steps in the process.
