Council's bid to block hotel housing asylum seekers to be heard on Friday
Epping Forest District Council said on Tuesday that it had filed documents at the High Court requesting an interim injunction stopping migrants from being housed at the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex.
It follows a series of protests in recent weeks outside the hotel, after an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
PA news agency understands the injunction bid is due to be heard on Friday by Mr Justice Eyre at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, with the case involving the council and Somani Hotels Ltd.
The council said in a statement on Tuesday that it had seen 'unprecedented levels of protest and disruption' in connection with asylum seeker accommodation.
It continued that it had issued the injunction bid because of the 'clear risk of further escalating community tensions and urgency of the need for the present situation to be brought under control'.
Councillors had voted unanimously last month to call on the Home Office to close the hotel, the council added.
Chris Whitbread, leader of the council, said the situation 'cannot go on' but the Government 'is not listening'.
He said: 'The use by the Home Office of the premises for asylum seekers poses a clear risk of further escalating community tensions already at a high, and the risk of irreparable harm to the local community.
'This will only increase with the start of the new school year.
'In our view, placing asylum seekers in the Bell Hotel is a clear breach of planning permission. It is not in use as a hotel, and it doesn't function as a hotel.
'The establishment of a centre to accommodate asylum seekers in this particular location, in close proximity to five schools, a residential care home, and the shops and amenities of the market town of Epping, is not appropriate in planning terms.'
The protests outside the hotel came after a man who was staying at the hotel, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with sexual assault.
Kebatu, who is accused of attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl, denies the charges and will stand trial this month.
A second man who resides at the hotel, Syrian national Mohammed Sharwarq, 32, has separately been charged with seven offences.
At a hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, he denied a count of sexual assault after being alleged to have kissed a man on the neck.
He indicated guilty pleas to a further two counts of common assault and four of assault by beating, with all of the offences said to have taken place at the hotel between July 25 and August 12.
He was remanded in custody until a trial at the same court next month.
Six men charged in relation to disorder outside the hotel will also appear in court next week.

Lords does not need ‘Putin apologists like Farage', minister says
A Cabinet minister has dismissed Nigel Farage's call for the Prime Minister to allow him to appoint peers to the Lords, saying Parliament will not benefit from more 'Putin apologists'. In a letter to Sir Keir Starmer, the Reform UK leader said that a 'democratic disparity' in the upper chamber needed to be addressed. Reform has four MPs and controls 10 councils in England. Asked about the party leader's demands, Defence Secretary John Healey said: 'I'm not sure that Parliament's going to benefit from more Putin apologists like Nigel Farage, to be honest.' Asked whether that accusation was 'a bit strong', Mr Healey told LBC: 'Look at what he's said about Russia, look at what he's said about Putin in the past. 'At this point, when maximum pressure needs to be put on Putin to support Ukraine in negotiations, when the maximum condemnation of Putin is required from someone who is sitting down with Trump in Alaska but turning up the attacks on Ukraine, it needs all voices. 'And I have to say, the voice of Reform is conspicuously absent in any of our discussions and any of our defence debates about Ukraine and about Russia.' The Cabinet minister urged Mr Farage, the MP for Clacton, to start 'weighing in alongside us and the other parties in the House of Commons' in condemning the Russian President. The Reform leader has previously called for Lords reform, writing in an article for the Telegraph in February that 'a smaller chamber is needed'. In his letter to the Prime Minister, first reported by the Times, Mr Farage said: 'Reform UK wishes to appoint life peers to the upper house at the earliest possible opportunity.' In what he described as a 'modest request', he said it was time that Reform was represented in the unelected second chamber. 'My party received over 4.1 million votes at the general election in July 2024. We have since won a large number of seats in local government, led in the national opinion polls for many months and won the only by-election of this parliament,' he said. Political appointments to the Lords are made at the discretion of the Prime Minister, who is under no constitutional obligation to elevate opposition figures but will sometimes ask other leaders to nominate individuals. In December, Sir Keir appointed 30 new Labour peers, including his former chief of staff Sue Gray – which Mr Farage said at the time showed the ruling party's 'lofty ambition' to abolish the Lords had 'fallen by the wayside'. The Conservatives appointed six new peers, while the Liberal Democrats appointed two.

The surprising link between gardening and financial fraud
A new campaign, "Protect Your Patch", has been launched to encourage people over 65 to use their gardening instincts to combat financial fraud. The initiative, a partnership between Take Five to Stop Fraud, Rachel de Thame from BBC Gardeners' World, and the National Allotment Society, aims to promote seeking trusted advice. Research indicates that while many older people consult family and friends for gardening tips, far fewer seek similar advice regarding financial fraud. Rachel de Thame urged individuals to apply the same care to protecting their finances as they do to nurturing their allotments, likening fraudsters to "invasive species". Timed with National Allotments Week, the campaign stresses the importance of getting a second opinion from trusted sources to safeguard money from scams.

Conservative TV host crashes Jasmine Crockett town hall to call Democrat a ‘fake ghetto hoodrat'
Right-wing TV host Sara Gonzales got herself thrown out of a town hall hosted by Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett in Texas on Thursday after heckling the congresswoman and calling her 'a fake ghetto hoodrat.' Crockett was reminiscing about her grandmother when Gonzales, who works for former Fox News host Glenn Beck 's Blaze TV, stood up and started berating her. 'Jasmine! The people of Dallas deserve better than a fake ghetto hoodrat!' Gonzales shouted. 'Do they know you're a rich kid from Missouri? Do they know you're a spoiled rich kid from Missouri?' Her remarks drew an angry reaction from other members of the audience, and she was promptly hustled out of the venue by security. As Gonzales left, a woman pushed against her and snarled: 'Get your ass out of here!' Another man approached her and ordered her to 'Get out! Get out!' 'Don't touch me! Get her off me!' the journalist hit back. 'Get off me! Get the f*** off me!' She also continued to yell at Crockett: 'Do your people know you're a spoiled rich kid from Missouri?' On the steps outside, Gonzales sarcastically asked police officers: 'Are you proud?' They responded by demanding she leave the venue and threatened to place her in handcuffs if she refused to comply. Gonzales subsequently posted a video of the incident on X captioned: 'I confronted Jasmine Crockett at a townhall for being a fake hoodrat.' The stunt appeared to be a calculated attempt to disrupt a Democrat's town hall in response to numerous equivalent events held by Republicans descending into the chaos of late, most recently that of Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood, who was peppered with hostile questions from his constituents about the Donald Trump administration's failure to release the Jeffrey Epstein files. Gonzales was not the only person to protest Crockett at her event. Another woman shouted at the politician: 'Jasmine, why do you hate white people? Why are you racist towards white people?' Gonzales was at least correct in saying that Crockett hails from Missouri. The representative was born in St Louis but went on to attend prestigious universities in Tennessee and Texas before becoming a public defender in Bowie County, Texas, before running for public office. Gonzales herself is the host of Blaze's Sara Gonzales Unfiltered, which has run since 2019 and on which she has been billed as 'everyone's favorite spicy Latina,' with the show promising 'a no-holds-barred take on news and culture.'
