Food park project plans announced in Bahrain
Bahrain - Finance and National Economy Minister Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa yesterday launched the strategy for the new Bahrain Food Holding Company, (Ghitha), and announced plans for a significant food park project.
The initiatives align with directives from His Majesty King Hamad and follow instructions from Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to bolster national food security.
Ghitha, a subsidiary of Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat, will consolidate the fund's food-related assets.
The food park, developed in partnership with Mumtalakat's real estate arm, Bahrain Real Estate Investment Company (Edamah), is projected to be one of the largest in the kingdom's food sector.
Shaikh Salman, who also chairs Mumtalakat, emphasised the importance of private sector partnerships in these efforts, stating that Ghitha's strategy aims to build an integrated food ecosystem focused on innovation, increased local production, and sustainable food practices.
The food park's first phase will cover an estimated one million square metres, serving as an integrated industrial centre for food production, manufacturing, and distribution.
Basim Al Saie, chairman of Ghitha, said the company's vision is to collaborate with both public and private sectors to drive investments, foster innovation, and enhance local capabilities for healthy and sustainable food production.
The launch event saw Ghitha unveil its new identity and details of the food park, which is intended to attract future investments and create job opportunities.

Dubai: Free WiFi now available at all bus, marine transport stations
Need to stay connected while waiting for the bus or marine transport? Here's good news: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Tuesday, June 17, that it has completed the rollout of the free Wi-Fi service in all 43 bus and marine transport stations across the city. The service, in collaboration with e&, enables public transport users to stay connected via their smartphones, tablets, and laptops while commuting, RTA noted, adding 'the initiative is part of (our) ongoing efforts to accelerate digital transformation across all our services.' RTA said the Wi-Fi service will undergo continuous evaluation for expansion and enhancement to ensure 'quality connectivity for passengers using buses and marine transport across the emirate.' Back in March this year, RTA launched its 360 Services Policy 'aimed at enhancing customer experience by providing digital services without requiring in-person visits. As part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts, RTA is shifting its services to self-service models, enabling customers to access them smoothly via shared digital platforms, such as Dubai Now app.

Below are details about these sites and about how they have been affected so far: South Pars gas field Israel struck an installation at the South Pars offshore gas field on June 14 where Iran has partially suspended production. South Pars is part the world's largest natural gas reserve, which Iran shares with Qatar. The attack struck four units of Phase 14 of South Pars, around 200 kilometres from Qatar's installations, many of which are joint ventures with international firms, including U.S. giants ExxonMobil and ConocoPhilips. South Pars makes up around a third of the world's largest reservoir of natural gas. Iran shares the reservoir with major gas exporter Qatar, which calls its field the North Dome. Iran exported about 15.8 billion cubic metres of gas in 2023, according to data by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, a grouping of gas exporter nations. The entire reservoir contains an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of usable gas - enough to supply the world's needs for 13 years, or to generate enough electricity to supply the U.S. for more than 35 years. Haifa oil refinery Israel's Bazan Group shut down its Haifa oil refinery, the country's largest, on June 16 after its power station was damaged in an Iranian attack. The refinery has a crude processing capacity of 197,000 barrels per day (bpd). Iran's oil Iran is OPEC's third-largest oil producer and extracts about 3.3 million bpd of crude oil, and another 1.3 million bpd of condensate and other liquids, totalling about 4.5% of global supplies. Iran's oil exports fell to nearly zero but rebounded under US President Joe Biden, with analysts saying sanctions were less rigorously enforced and Iran succeeded in evading them. Iran is exempt from OPEC+ output restrictions and China does not recognise the sanctions imposed on Tehran, meaning some Chinese private refiners have been placed on the U.S. Treasury's sanctions list. Analysts say Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members could compensate for any drop of Iranian supply by using their spare capacity to pump more.

Saudi Arabia breaks two new Guinness records in water desalination technology
The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) has received two Guinness World Records certificates, representing major milestones that highlight the Kingdom's prominent role in the global water sector. The records were presented during a ceremony held yesterday at the authority's headquarters in Riyadh, with Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley in attendance, along with a delegation from Guinness World Records, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. The first record acknowledged the world's largest seawater desalination plant utilizing reverse osmosis (RO) technology, part of Phase II of the Al-Khobar Production System project. This facility boasts a production capacity of 670,852.4 cubic meters per day and was constructed on the smallest land area worldwide for a facility of its size, achieved through innovative technical methodologies and value engineering. The record was officially registered on February 25, 2025. This achievement was noted during the construction of the Shuaibah Plant (Phase V) on April 22, 2025, and received commendation from the World Bank. With this accomplishment, the authority surpassed the Kingdom's previous record of 2.27 kWh per cubic meter, establishing a new global benchmark. These two recent achievements elevate SWA's total number of Guinness World Records to 11, further solidifying Saudi Arabia's position as a global center of excellence and innovation in the water sector, while emphasizing its critical role in fostering a more sustainable future for water resources.
