Thursday Murder Club's Helen Mirren 'offended' crew by going off script with one word
The Thursday Murder Club director shared how Hollywood icon Helen Mirren was able to offend its filming crew with just one word.
Richard Osman 's The Thursday Murder Club has made its cinematic debut on Friday, August 22, bringing to life his eagerly anticipated best-selling 2020 novel.
A plethora of stars quickly signed up for the film with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie leading its impressive cast.
But during The Thursday Murder Club: An Evening with Richard Osman at The British Library, American director Chris Columbus shared an issue that was experienced on set.
He elaborated: "There were a few Netflix executives who said, 'This is too British, we don't know what they are talking about'.'
'One of the things we got by the sensors was Pierce one day ad-libbed a word.
'He called someone a 'Plonker'. I yelled 'cut' and I said 'what is a plonker?' and he explained it to me and I thought 'That is fantastic, that has to stay in the film'.
'I'd heard the phrase 'w*****' before but there were a couple of people on the crew when Helen said it. It was not scripted.
'She said 'most of the police are w******' and people were offended on set.
"How could Elizabeth say that word? And I thought, that means it's staying in the film. I embraced that, I really did."
Osman's The Thursday Murder Club is the first in a series of books, followed by The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and The Last Devil To Die.
His fifth book, The Impossible Fortune, is also on the way, with its publishing date set for Monday, September 22.
As of yet, there has been no official confirmation that the franchise will return for a sequel film based on Osman's work.
However, Columbus has previously teased that there are already plans in the works for its return, telling Film Stories: 'If we're lucky enough, and all signs seem to point in that direction that we will be shooting a sequel or the next chapter – in the second movie.'
The Thursday Murder Club premieres on Friday, August 22, in cinemas and on Thursday, August 28, on Netflix.

'His nickname might be Tank, but I'm an FPV drone and I'm about to disable tiny boy. Yes, he's 1 of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. The 5ft 5in Gervonta Davis will be the opponent for Paul, who stands at 6ft 1in 'And I like my odds. First, I am going to kill David, then I will go on to slaughter Goliath.' Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix announced the fight, which will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Davis may be small of stature but packs a punch having knocked out twenty eight of his thirty one opponents to date. He is a controversial character, previously accused of domestic violence in 2023 by Vanessa Posso, who is the mother of Davis' daughter. Posso has since publicly withdrawn her abuse allegations. In July, he was arrested again on a domestic violence charge. As seen in jail records obtained by Daily Mail, Davis is now facing a battery charge after being arrested in the early hours of Friday, June 15 in Miami Beach, Florida. In his latest defense Davis retained the WBA lightweight title via a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Prior to that result, he was No 8 in the pound-for-pound list and among the very best boxers in the world. His fight with Paul will not place that belt on the line and is purely an exhibition, following on from Paul's clash with Mike Tyson in November 2024. It remains to be seen whether the AJ fight will still materialise next year, though it appears Paul is confident. His reference to going on to 'slaughter Goliath' seems to clearly reference his intention to face the Brit, which would no doubt be his biggest and most dangerous challenge.

Lenny Henry says TV industry ‘still struggling' to do black hair and make up
The comedian, 66, picked up the outstanding achievement award at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday and reflected on his career and experience starting out in the industry in the 1970s. 'It was hard, you know? I mean, they didn't have a light for me', he told the festival. Sir Lenny Henry made his TV debut in 1975 'I called it the negro light. I said, 'Break out the negro light' and they'd bring out this big-ass spotlight and point it at me.' Sir Lenny, who made his TV debut on British talent show New Faces in 1975, said someone who worked at the BBC 'started to realise that I needed different lighting to those guys'. 'Also there's the thing on (TV series) Three Of A Kind where all the wigs were for white people,' he said. 'So we had Michael Howard and Dave Allen's wigs, and they never had any wigs for me. 'I had to get some dreadlocks for a character. So they sent me to the London wig company, and they made some dreadlocks for me. 'And then a year later, they had more stuff for me to do, and they got nearer, closer to what they should be like. 'And so I sort of began a whole thing where they had to know how to make black hair, and they had to know how to do black make up.' He added: 'They're still struggling with it. People like (make up artists) Jan Sewell and Sally Sutton really knew how to do it, because they did it on my show. 'But before then, they never had to do it. 'I went to a black make up lady on The Fosters in 1976 and I thought, 'Oh, it's going to be like this. There's going to be people that do make up for us'. 'Once The Fosters was over I never saw her again.' Sir Lenny was born in Dudley, near Birmingham, in 1958, and shot to fame in 1975 when his stand-up comic routine won TV talent show New Faces. After his TV debut, Sir Lenny appeared on landmark black working-class comedy The Fosters, and comedy sketch show Three Of A Kind, before landing his own self-titled show in the mid-1980s. In 1985 he co-founded Comic Relief, and in 2015 he was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to drama and charity. A year later he was presented with a special Bafta award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television and in 2020 he helped to launch an independent body that examines representation in journalism, acting, film, television and radio in the UK called the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity. In February he received the Freedom of the City of London and in May he and filmmaker Richard Curtis accepted a philanthropy award recognising Comic Relief's efforts to address inequality and poverty.
