Real Madrid secures 1-0 victory over Getafe ahead of Copa del Rey final
Real Madrid beats Getafe 1-0
Real Madrid
secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Getafe at the Coliseum on Wednesday, maintaining their pursuit of Spanish league leader Barcelona. Arda Güler's first-half goal kept Madrid within four points of Barcelona, who had won their match against Mallorca 1-0 on Tuesday.
Carlo Ancelotti opted to rest several key players ahead of Saturday's Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in Seville. Brazil forward Endrick made his first Spanish league start, while Vinícius Júnior was substituted in the second half and Jude Bellingham entered as a substitute.

The match saw injury concerns for Madrid as Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba suffered muscle injuries. Camavinga replaced Alaba at halftime but had to leave the field in the final minutes.
"We'll see, but it's unlikely that they will be available on Saturday," Ancelotti said.
The victory holds special significance for Madrid, who had previously suffered heavy defeats to Barcelona this season, including a 5-2 loss in the Spanish Super Cup final and a 4-0 defeat in their first league encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Güler scored the decisive goal in the 21st minute with a well-placed right-footed shot.
"Fortunately, I scored the goal that gave us the three points. We knew it was going to be a tough match. It was important to give us confidence for the final," Güler said.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made crucial saves late in the match to preserve Madrid's win, their third consecutive league victory following their
Champions League
elimination against Arsenal.
The match was briefly interrupted due to Getafe fans chanting against Dani Ceballos. Getafe, now in 12th place, continued their poor form with their third consecutive loss.
In other matches, Celta Vigo climbed to seventh place with a 3-0 victory over fifth-place Villarreal. Fer López, Borja Iglesias, and Iago Aspas scored for Celta, while Villarreal played with ten men after Eric Bailly's red card in the 37th minute.
Athletic Bilbao strengthened their hold on fourth place with a 1-0 win over Las Palmas, thanks to Iñaki Williams' early goal. The victory gave Bilbao an eight-point cushion over fifth-place Villarreal.
Alaves moved out of the relegation zone by defeating Real Sociedad 1-0, with Nahuel Tenaglia scoring the winner in the 65th minute.

India up against Hong Kong's 'naturalised' side
Manolo Marquez PANAJI: Manolo Marquez has been in-charge of the national team for seven games since last year, and his only win came against lowly-ranked Maldives where, by the coach's admission, his team 'didn't play a good game. ' There have been disappointing results, including last week's 2-0 loss against Thailand. But given some encouraging shows – draws against Vietnam away, Malaysia at home – Manolo believes India can get a favourable result against Hong Kong in the Asian Cup 2027 final round qualifier at newly-constructed Kai Tak Stadium, a 50,000-capacity venue that will host its first football match. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'We are not very worried about the scores in friendlies,' Manolo told reporters. 'What's important is that our focus should be on point.' Poll What is the biggest challenge for India in the upcoming match against Hong Kong? Inconsistent performance Pressure to win Strong opposition Given their patchy form, India will find it challenging. Having dropped points vs Bangladesh in the first round, they now must win against Hong Kong to have their noses in front as only group toppers qualify for the continental showpiece in Saudi Arabia. But the environment, the relationship between the players, regardless of the results, is very good. It's true that we have won just one game against Maldives, but the team is also difficult to beat. We are preparing some things for the future,' said Manolo. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket's TV market and the watershed moments Nobody knows about Indian football's future but the present certainly looks bleak. Spread over 18 months and 16 matches, India have won just two. The three trophies that India won at home in 2023 and the away win against Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers now seem like ancient history.

It hurts but you cannot keep crying, says Jannik Sinner
Italy's Jannik Sinner tosses his racket during the final. (AP Photo) PARIS: Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, seated before a room full of media, ran his fingers through his unruly mop, desperately trying to pick positives from the epic clash against Carlos Alcaraz in which he had three match points. 'Seeing my level today (Sunday). It has improved since Rome, which was my main goal, to see where my level is at,' the 23-year-old said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Sinner, who returned to competition in May following a three-month ban for testing positive for anabolic agent Clostebol, could play just one tournament in the lead-up to the French Open . Circumstances apart, the final will be looked at as much as the one Alcaraz won as the opportunity Sinner let slip. 'Making the final is difficult to accept because I had lots of chances,' said Sinner, a three-time Major winner who came up short in the title match of a Grand Slam for the first time. 'If you only see the sad part, you're never going to come back. I believe I have improved since last year. It hurts, yes, but you cannot keep crying.
