Raid on Miri house sees cops seize ecstasy worth RM137,064, arrest two suspects for trafficking

MIRI (May 19): A raid on a house at Jalan Taman Delight Utama here on May 12 saw police seize 117,064 grammes of powder suspected to be ecstasy and 400 tablets believed to be ecstasy weighing 146 grammes.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah told a press conference today that during the raid police arrested a foreign national.
'On May 12, approximately 9pm, a raid on a house at Jalan Taman Delight Utama conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department of the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters saw the arrest of a 44-year-old male foreign national.
'The team also seized approximately 117,064 grammes of suspected ecstasy powder and 146 grammes, that is equivalent to 400 tablets, suspected to be ecstasy pills, with a total estimated value of RM137,064,' he said.
Mohd Farhan said at around 11am the following day, the narcotics team arrested a 43-year-old local man at the same location in connection with the same case.
He said police also seized a saloon car estimated to be worth RM50,000 and jewellery valued at RM34,638.80.
Urine tests on both suspects returned positive for drugs.
He revealed that the local suspect has prior criminal records, while the foreign suspect did not.
Mohd Farhan said the two were part of a syndicate, which used the house to store drugs.
The foreign suspect acted as the storekeeper, while the local suspect was the runner responsible for distributing drugs around Miri, he said.
'The foreign suspect received a monthly wage of RM1,500 and a commission of between RM500 and RM1,000, while the local suspect was paid RM200 for each delivery,' Mohd Farhan said.
Both suspects were placed on a seven-day remand order, which will end on May 20 and May 21 respectively.

Mohd Farhan said the drugs seized are sufficient to supply 177,464 addicts.
He thanked the public for the tip-off and pledged police would continue to track down remaining members of the syndicate.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
The Sections provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, shall be punished with a minimum 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

SHAH ALAM: Police busted a drug trafficking syndicate known as the "Alstonia Gang" after arresting nine suspects, including a foreign woman, and seizing various types of drugs worth RM5.11mil in five separate raids around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Tuesday (June 3). "The second raid was conducted on a house in Semenyih and led to the arrest of a man and the seizure of powdery substances believed to be MDMA weighing 230g, followed by a third raid at 6.10pm in Puchong where a male suspect was held and 966.10g of ecstasy seized. "At 10.30pm, we conducted raid number four on a house in Kajang and arrested a man and seized 110 vape cartridges suspected of containing 2,880g of drugs," he told a media conference here Friday (June 6). Comm Hussein said the suspect then led police to a house in Kajang, where they seized MDMA powder weighing 21,452g, ketamine (4,722g), ecstasy pills (641g) and Erimin 5 pills weighing an estimated 1,960g. He said that following interrogations, police then arrested three men and a woman around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur who are believed to be involved with the syndicate. "In addition to the syndicate leader and his lover, who has lived in the country for the past 10 years, seven other suspects, all aged between 24 and 38 years old, worked as food traders, personal shoppers and barbers. "Six of them tested positive for drugs and three tested negative, while three of them also had previous records related to crime and drugs," he said. Comm Hussein said the syndicate targeted entertainment centres around the Klang Valley to sell to individuals via face-to-face interaction and also online. He added that police also seized five vehicles, including a luxury car, jewellery, watches, branded handbags and various cash denominations, with the total seizure amounting to RM341,449.16. Geng Upik leader, accomplice jailed for organised crime, drug links
KOTA KINABALU: Two individuals, including the leader of 'Geng Upik', were sentenced to prison by the High Court here today. Datuk Maslan Sani, 42, who was identified as the leader, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to being a member of the organised crime group between 2015 and 2023. Nelson Yen Yee Chung, 47, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to an alternative charge of aiding the organised crime group. Both accused entered their pleas before Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng. Maslan was charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Meanwhile, the alternative charge against Nelson was framed under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Maslan was arrested at 2.30am on Dec 25, 2023, at an entertainment outlet in Penampang on suspicion of involvement in the organised crime group. Investigations showed the accused played the role of group leader and was involved in drug trafficking activities alongside other members to gain material benefits. The investigation also revealed that the organised crime group 'Geng Upik' was involved in drug trafficking activities connected to several serious offences, including three cases in Tawau and one in Manggatal. In Tawau, authorities seized 53kg of syabu linked to 'Geng Upik'. The investigation also led to the arrest of an individual who assisted the group, namely Syafilah Pawawoi, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug offences. Another individual who also allegedly assisted 'Geng Upik' is currently on trial at the Tawau High Court under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In Manggatal, the group was linked to the seizure of 4.6kg of syabu. In Nelson's case, he was arrested on Dec 25, 2023 in Inanam. The investigation found, among other things, that the accused had assisted the organised crime group by attending meetings and helping to manage its business and financial affairs. Both accused, through their respective lawyers, asked for a lenient sentence. Lawyer Hamid Ismail, representing Maslan, said that the accused is a divorcee with nine children, aged between three and 18, to support. He also informed the court that the accused was a first-time offender and expressed remorse for his actions. Lawyers Datuk Ram Singh and Prem Elmer Ganasan, representing Nelson, informed the court that this was his (Nelson's) first offence and that he regretted his actions. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham, Lina Hanini Ismail, Siti Hajar Mat Radzi, and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan. Meanwhile, the trial of three other individuals – Zulkahar Dusing, 38, Rahman Burijin, 44, and Jaisalfian Jaineh @ Zaini, 45 – who are facing charges of being members of 'Geng Upik', is set to take place from July 15 to July 18. In total, 15 individuals have been charged in connection with the 'Geng Upik' case. RM1.5M Marijuana Seized at Penang Airport, More in Parcels
BUTTERWORTH: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) found 29 packets of marijuana leaves, believed to be worth RM1.5 million, in a piece of luggage at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) last March 4. State Customs director Rohaizad Ali said the luggage, which did not have any identification, was found at Baggage Carousel A at the airport. 'A check of the luggage found 29 transparent packets containing dried plants suspected of being marijuana flowers, estimated to weigh 16,210 grams with a market value of RM1.5 million,' he told a press conference here today. In another case on April 16, Rohaizad said four packages of dried plants suspected of being marijuana flowers, weighing 2,236 grams worth RM219,128, were found by Customs officers during checks on parcels at Pos Malaysia Berhad's Courier Mail Post (PMK). The parcel containing the dried plants was declared to contain nine units of 'Comic Books', which had been exported to the United Kingdom (UK) and returned to Malaysia with the status of 'Returned Parcel', he said. He said investigations, under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, were still in progress.
