
SpiceJet flight's passengers sit in aircraft for 3 hours in Delhi, reach Pune 4 hours late

Pune: Around 150 passengers of SpiceJet's Delhi-Pune flight (SG-477) reached their destination around 9.30pm on Friday, almost four hours behind the schedule and after sitting in the stationary aircraft in the national capital for about three hours.
The flight was scheduled to depart from Delhi at 3.25pm and reach the city at 5.35pm. It was initially rescheduled to 4.50pm. The boarding started at 4.30pm, but the aircraft was airborne only around 7.30pm. Flyers remained seated in the static aircraft for almost three hours. They touched down in Pune around 9.30pm.
SpiceJet denied that passengers were kept seated in the plane for three hours. "SpiceJet flight SG 477, scheduled to operate from Delhi to Pune on May 30, 2025, was delayed because of a last minute technical issue with the aircraft.
Passengers were assisted throughout and were served with refreshments. Passengers were not kept onboard for three hours," a SpiceJet spokesperson told TOI.
Puranjay Kumar Rana, a passenger of the flight, differed. "Until around 7.25pm, all flyers sat in the aircraft and were frustrated. It can't be possible that the airline realised that there was an issue with the aircraft after boarding. The flight was already delayed by an hour and checks must done much earlier."
Rana said the cabin crew kept on saying that the aircraft would fly in 10 minutes. "After sitting in the aircraft for more than an hour, flyers began to lose their patience. The cabin crew, too, got frustrated and told many flyers that it was not their fault and why were we getting angry at them?" the flyer said.
"There have been so many cases of airlines keeping passengers seated in the aircraft. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the civil aviation ministry should take some steps on this," Rana said.

New Delhi: Last month, over 75 flights were diverted when thunderstorms with speeds of 50-80 kmph hit Delhi airport . While thunderstorms pass in a few minutes, they cause a cascading effect, leading to flight delays throughout the day. Around IGI airport, 45 thunderstorms normally occur in a year, and of these, 29 strike from May to Aug. Thunderstorms are often accompanied by lightning, wind gusts, squalls and hail, impacting flights during different stages of operations, including takeoff, cruising and landing. When a thunderstorm hits an airport, wind direction changes frequently. A flight cannot take off or land if the wind direction is not uniform. In May 2018, about 70 Delhi-bound flights were diverted — the highest impact of thunderstorms in summer in the past few years. However, in the last month, six major thunderstorms happened in the city, impacting flight operations. On May 2, an intense thunderstorm, accompanied by a squall of 74kmph, diverted three Delhi-bound flights to other cities. Over 500 flights were delayed due to a ripple effect on the network of airlines. In aviation terminology, a "go-around" describes a safety procedure where pilots abandon their landing attempt and the aircraft ascends back to a safe altitude to either attempt another landing or divert to another airport. Significant impact was seen on May 25 when a thunderstorm diverted 49 flights to other cities. "Of all the weather-related hazards, thunderstorms have the highest impact on aviation across the world. During a thunderstorm, an aircraft experiences turbulence as air currents are unstable, leading to updrafts and downdrafts," said R K Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD. Updraft is a strong column of rising air that can suddenly lift the aircraft while downdraft is a rapid column of sinking air, which often happens after the updraft weakens, causing an aircraft to lose altitude. A study, 'Characteristics of Thunderstorms and Squalls over IGI Airport', which analysed data from 1995 to 2005, found the maximum thunderstorms in June followed by July, and maximum squalls in May followed by June. "More than 80% of thunderstorms in each season are of duration less than three hours, with the remaining mostly 3-6 hours. For pre-monsoon months, the most favourable timing of thunderstorms and squalls is 1200-1500 UTC, while for monsoon, it starts earlier," said the study. Another study, 'Bad Weather and Aircraft Accidents – Global Vis-à-vis Indian Scenario', found 21% of aircraft accidents in India during 1992-2008 were weather-related. Across the globe, it was 26-32%. The study revealed the highest number of these accidents was due to wind-related factors, like gusts, updrafts, downdrafts and low visibility, each responsible for 16% of total weather-related accidents. About 12% of weather-related accidents were due to cumulonimbus and thunderstorms. In the US, 48% was due to bad wind conditions, as found for India, followed by 20.5% due to low visibility and ceiling.

No refreshments, double security checks: Air India flyers from Delhi to Pune stuck in aircraft for over three hours
Pune: Around 150 passengers travelling from Delhi to Pune on an Air India (AI-2971) flight spent more than three hours inside the aircraft on Sunday afternoon waiting for it to take off. The passengers were stuck without any refreshments or proper information about take-off time. This incident is a repeat of last week when passengers of a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Pune spent hours inside the aircraft. The Air India flight was scheduled to take off from Delhi at 4pm and land in Pune by 6.05pm. It finally took off from Delhi around 7.15 pm and landed in Pune around 8.50pm. Major General Rajan Kochhar (retired), who was travelling with his wife, told TOI that the boarding was on time. "After we boarded and the flight was set to take off, a bout of bad weather, possibly a dust storm, hit Delhi. The take-off was aborted due to strong winds and bad weather. However, it subsided within half an hour, but even then, the aircraft did not take off," Kochhar, who was coming to Pune for a reunion function at the National Defence Academy (NDA), said. Kochhar said when passengers started to question the cabin crew, they were told that one of the flyers had deboarded. "The crew informed us that one of the flyers chose to leave the aircraft. The staff said since a passenger deboarded, a fresh round of security checks needed to be conducted. This caused further delay, and cabin bags of all flyers were again checked," he said. "It is very surprising that the cabin crew did not offer the passengers any refreshments. We, being in the service, have always flown Air India, and this kind of attitude wasn't expected from the airline," Kochhar added. On May 30, a similar set of events inconvenienced more than 150 flyers travelling to Pune from Delhi on a SpiceJet flight. Flyers have demanded many times that during such events, they should be taken back to the terminal building rather than being kept in the aircraft.
