Mumbai: Deccan Queen, one of Central Railway's most prestigious and popular trains, turned 95 on Sunday. Introduced between Mumbai and Pune, the two premier cities of Maharashtra, on June 1, 1930, Deccan Queen was a major landmark in the history of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the forerunner of Central Railway.
This was the first deluxe train introduced on the railway to serve two important cities of the region and was aptly named Deccan Queen or Dakkan ki Rani.
The train has the distinction of having many firsts to its credit. The Deccan Queen is the only running train with the facility of a dining car, which offers table service and has modern pantry facilities such as a microwave oven, deep freezer, and toaster. The dining car is tastefully furnished with cushioned chairs and carpet.
"Coaches with roller bearings were introduced for the first time in this train in the past.
End-on generation coaches were replaced with self-generating coaches with a 110-volt system for the first time. First and second class chair cars were introduced," said CR chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila The Mumbai-Pune Deccan Queen was attached with a Vistadome coach with effect from August 15, 2021, providing passengers a golden opportunity for a wonderful view of the breathtaking scenery as the train traversed through the Western Ghats.

All the conventional coaches of Deccan Queen Express were replaced with LHB coaches in June 2022 under Project Utkrisht, with modern facilities like LED lights, bio toilets, Braille signages, etc. The train now runs with a revised composition of sixteen coaches: three AC chair cars, nine second class chair cars, one Vistadome coach, one dining car, one general second class cum guard's brake van, and a generator car, said a CR spokesperson.
"It is always a pleasure travelling by this popular train to Pune and also back to Mumbai. In fact, many passengers like me are happy with the punctuality of this train besides the comfort it offers for a pleasant ride," said Sumita Desai, a Mulund resident who travels to Pune regularly as she has a second home there. Additionally, some passengers travel daily from Pune on monthly passes and hold govt and semi-govt jobs in the city.

Airport lane tweaks fail to solve rush-hour problems on first day

1 2 Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police on Monday introduced a slew of measures to reduce congestion and improve vehicle movement outside the terminal building at the Kolkata airport. While it seemed effective in the morning and the afternoon, officers were sent scurrying back to the drawing board to finetune the measures further after traffic snarls resurfaced during the evening rush hour. Among the measures that were rolled out on Monday was a new lane demarcation system outside the terminal. Traffic cones and flexible posts with reflective strips were installed along the driveway, covering exit gates 1A/B and 2A/B. "We started installing the traffic cones from Friday and from this week, the total lane demarcation system is up and running. We are, however, open for feedback from passengers to improve it further," said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate. Cops said more signboards indicating "pick-up" points would be positioned ahead of the entry points, as the posts create a physical barrier to stop vehicles from cutting across lanes. However, the problems resurfaced in the evening when traffic count shot up. Of the key reasons why the system hit a bump was VIP vehicles that blocked the lane next to the terminal building and led to a snarl. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret to Never Losing Anything Again? This Little Black Dot dailygadgetreviews Undo "When I first came out of the airport, the sight of the lane markers gave a sense of order and discipline that was missing outside the terminal building for years. But soon faults began to appear. As I stood outside gate 2A/B waiting for my driver to pick me up, he said he was stuck behind a queue of vehicles in the first lane and was unable to move out of the queue," said Goutam Chatterjee, a resident of Lake Gardens while waiting for his car. The system currently has three lanes: two single-file lanes and one double-width lane. A traffic police officer stationed at the airport said they were advising drivers headed for gates 3A/B to use the double lane to avoid blockage in the single lanes. Officers are also requesting VIP vehicle users to avoid parking in the lane closest to the terminal. "These are early days. We expect the system to function better once additional signage is in place," the officer said. The move had come after Bidhannagar police and Kolkata airport authorities had a meeting earlier this month to embark on a set of joint initiatives eliminate the chaos, clear the logjam, streamline traffic movement, and improve the first impression of travellers landing in the city. Among the measures decided were reopening the 2A/B exit gate. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Araku Valley ‘Jungle Bells' gets makeover with German tents

Visakhapatnam: In an attempt to attract tourists for the upcoming tourism season, the state tourism department is implementing 'Jungle Bells', an eco-tourism project at Tyda on the way to Araku Valley, with new attractions — German tents in place of wooden cottages. These wooden cottages were constructed 24 years ago in Tyda village, a hamlet on the Visakhapatnam-Araku road, 75 km from the port city in the combined Andhra Pradesh, to allow visitors to stay within the dense and green nature of the Eastern Ghats region. The first eco-tourism project in the state featured beautiful wood log cottages of different types, which gave tourists a new experience all these years. However, most of them were damaged in recent years, and the authorities are now replacing them with new technology. The German tents, often referred to as German hangar tents, are large, temporary structures typically used for events, exhibitions, and other purposes. These tents are characterised by their sturdy, often aluminium, frames and durable, waterproof fabric covers, which are also UV resistant. They can be customised in size and shape, making them adaptable to various event and accommodation needs. According to tourism department sources, the material used in German tents is designed to withstand diverse weather conditions, including rain, wind, and sun, ensuring reliable shelter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The state govt arranged wooden cottages 24 years ago, attracting thousands of tourists over the years, as visitors enjoyed the feeling of staying in tree huts, also known as hanging cottages, in the forest. However, a few of them were recently damaged, and the department is replacing them with German tents. The govt allocated Rs 7.5 crore for the new attraction and the construction of tents at a fast pace. Sources said there are 23 wooden cottages in Tyda. The authorities will keep four old cottages and two new cottages along with the 17 tents on the 17 wooden cottages. So far, authorities constructed 14 tents at Rs 13 lakh each. Apart from this, many modernisation works have been undertaken by the tourism department in 'Jungle Bells'. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cool comfort worth the extra 100, say passengers on board state's first AC local

Kolkata: Suburban commuters on board the maiden AC EMU Ranaghat-Sealdah train were ecstatic to experience the much-awaited service on the first day of the week. The feelings were mixed when it came to coughing up Rs 120 for the ride from Ranaghat to Sealdah. While some seemed sensitive about paying Rs 100 more for a journey that otherwise costs Rs 20 in non-AC rakes, others said the cool comfort and the superior travel justified the fare. A monthly ticket costs Rs 2,430. The one-way fare ranges from Rs 35 to Rs 120 depending on the distance travelled. The train was flagged off with much fanfare from Sealdah on Sunday. Commercial services started at 8.29 am on Monday. The inaugural commercial service was fairly crowded, with several passengers standing. But there was enough legroom, unlike the non-AC local trains. Ranaghat resident Dilip Ghosh, who works in Khadi Bhavan on CR Avenue, was smiling as he looked around the ICF-made rake, from the AC vent over the seat, noting the time as the automatic doors closed and the train chugged out of Ranaghat station. "This is like travelling on a metro train. We are covering 90 km in AC comfort and saving time as well. It would have taken around Rs 1,000 for the same ride on a hired car and taken me at least two-and-a-half hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo I shall reach Sealdah station at 10.10 am. A bus ride from there to my office will take another 10 mins," the 55-year-old said happily. "I shall try to catch the return train at 6.50 pm so I can be home by 8.45 pm (the Down train reaches Ranaghat at 8.32 pm)," he added. "I don't know...," said Balmiki Ray, a passenger who took the train from Khardah. "I would have paid Rs 5 for the same journey. Today I bought a ticket to Sealdah for Rs 60. The monthly passes will be a bit cheaper. But I wonder if it makes sense to increase my daily commuting expense 12 times for this comfort," the worker employed with a shop at Bagri Market said. Biplab Mondol, who boarded the train from Chakdah, echoed: "Today I paid Rs 105 because I was curious about the facility. The monthly ticket will cost me Rs 2,125. It's difficult to make a call when the daily commuting by non-AC train costs barely Rs 10," Mondol said. Arati Saha, a schoolteacher from Krishnanagar, insisted: "This is the ultimate comfort and safety. Two reserved coaches for ladies, that, too, air-conditioned! Only two rides may seem tokenistic, but this is certainly a significant start." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
